HOLLAND, MI – The Calvin women’s volleyball team split a pair of matches in the Midwest Invitational hosted by Hope College.  The Knights defeated Wisconsin Lutheran 3-0 by scores of 25-14, 25-18, 25-21 and then fell to #9 Elmhurst 25-21, 25-20, 25-23.
In the win over Wisconsin Lutheran, Calvin hit a .225 clip while holding the Warriors to a mere .028. Senior Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian) led the way with 11 kills.  Her younger sister Maggie (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian) had eight kills.  Junior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) dished out 28 assists.  Senior middle hitter Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids) had seven kills and eight blocks.
In the loss to Elmhurst, Calvin hit .202 while Elmhurst hit .209.  The Knights were out blocked as a team 8-6.5.  Lizzie Kamp and Maggie Kamp led Calvin in defeat with 11 and ten kills respectively.  The big story in the match was the serve and return of serve.  Elmhurst recorded 11 aces to go along with three errors.  Calvin, on the other hand, served only two aces to go along with eight errors.
“We didn’t play well enough all around to come out 2-0 tonight,” Calvin head coach Amber Warners said.  “When you don’t get a good pass off of serve receive, it takes you out of system and limits your offense.”
Calvin will play Dominican at 10:00am and Wisconsin-Whitewater at noon tomorrow in the second day of the tournament.
