NAPERVILLE, IL - The nationally-ranked Calvin volleyball team got back on the winning track with victories over St. Norbert (WI) and North Central Friday night at the Tiffany Robinson Memorial Invitational. Calvin (17-3) opened the tournament with a 25-15, 25-9, 25-8 win over St. Norbert and continued on with a 25-15, 25-14, 25-16 win over host North Central.

HOLLAND – Calvin’s seven-match win streak came to an end as did its sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings as the Knights were defeated at rival Hope Wednesday night 25-22, 25-22, 25-20.
Calvin and Hope are now tied for the MIAA lead with 10-1 conference records. Both teams came into the match nationally-ranked with Calvin ranked ninth and Hope ranked 12th.
Using the momentum of playing in front of more than 2,000 fans, Hope grabbed a quick 6-1 lead in set one and used an 8-3 run midway through the set to grab an early one-set lead. Calvin led in sets two and three but could not survive Hope comeback bids.

For the second time in her collegiate career, Calvin College sophomore Lizzie Kamp has been named MIAA Player of the Week in volleyball. A native of Orland Park, Illinois, Kamp (Chicago Christian HS) had 32 kills for a hitting percentage of .411 for the week as Calvin won three straight matches to maintain its hold on first place in the MIAA. In a key road matchup against Alma, Kamp had 13 kills and no errors in 26 attack attempts for a .500 hitting percentage, and added 14 digs and three blocks to lead the Knights to a sweep of the Scots.

ANGOLA, IN - Calvin remained unbeaten in MIAA play with a 25-19, 25-20, 25-14 victory at Trine University Saturday afternoon. Ranked ninth nationally, the Knights are now 15-2 overall and 10-0 in the MIAA heading into a showdown at rival Hope next Wednesday.
Sophomore Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had 10 kills and seven digs. Juniors Erin VanderPlas (Cadillac/McBain Christian HS) and Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had six kills apiece. VanderPlas had two block assists and two block solos while DeHaan had one block solo and five block assists.

Ninth-ranked Calvin maintained its status as the MIAA’s top team Friday evening at the Van Noord Arena as the Knights defeated the Adrian Bulldogs in three sets (25-13, 25-14, 25-23), pushing their league record to a still-spotless 9-0, and 14-2 overall. Juniors Erin Vander Plas (Cadillac, MI) and Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids, MI) led the team with 12 and 11 kills respectively, with sophomore Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, MI) finishing with nine strong ones of her own. The Knights totaled seven service aces over the course of the three sets, as well as tallying eight blocks. Junior libero Kelly Peterson (Ramsey, MN) led the team with 12 digs on the back line. Lizzie Kamp also notched 10 digs of her own. Freshman setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids, MI) dished out 37 assists and helped out on a number of the team’s blocks.

ALMA - Calvin picked up an important 25-13, 25-23, 25-18 victory at Alma Tuesday night to remain unbeaten in league play at the midpoint of the MIAA double round-robin schedule. Ranked ninth nationally, Calvin improves to 13-2 overall and 8-0 in league play with the win. Calvin sophomore Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had a stellar all-around match with 14 digs, 13 kills, two block assists, one block solo and an attack percentage of .500. Chipping in with six kills apiece were senior Kim Wigboldy (Chandler, AZ/Valley Christian HS) and juniors Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Erin VanderPlas (Cadillac/McBain Christian HS). DeHaan also had five block assists. Calvin will now prepare for a busy weekend as the Knights host Adrian Friday night at 6:30 p.m. and travel to Trine on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.

KALAMAZOO - The ninth-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team held off a determined Kalamazoo College squad Wednesday night at the Anderson Athletic Center, defeating the Hornets 25-16, 25-16, 18-25, 25-22. Calvin snapped Kalamazoo’s four-match win streak and improved to 12-2 overall and 7-0 in the MIAA. Calvin rolled through the first two sets, compiling a hitting percentage of .464 in set one and a hitting percentage of .419 in set two. Kalamazo’s defense then stiffened in set three however as the Hornets hit .306 and limited the Knights to just a .186 attack.

OLIVET - The ninth-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team remained on top of the MIAA standings with a 25-22, 25-11, 25-17 victory at Olivet Friday evening. The host Comets (6-4 overall, 3-2 MIAA) jumped out to a 19-16 lead in set one but the Knights rallied to score nine of the next 12 points to gain the set one win and take the momentum throughout the remainder of the match.
Junior Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had a huge match with 17 kills, a hitting percentage of .600 and seven block assists. She was also credited with a pair of service aces and a pair of digs.

Calvin remained perfect in conference play, defeating Albion College in three sets (25-6, 25-13, 25-16) Tuesday night at Van Noord Arena. Junior Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL) led the Knights at the net with 13 kills in 20 attempts, and adding 6 block assists. With the win, the Knights improved their record to 5-0 in the MIAA standings and 10-2 overall. Calvin is ranked ninth in the most recent AVCA Division III Top 25 poll. Calvin returns to action on Friday when it travels to Olivet for a 6:30 p.m. conference match.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin middle hitter Rebecca Kamp its Player of the Week and Calvin setter Megan Rietema its Specialty Player of the Week in volleyball for matches played through September 19. Kamp, a junior from Orland Park, Ill. (Chicago Christian HS), had 88 kills for a .448 hitting percentage in five matches, three of them against nationally-ranked opponents. She is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and sixth time in her career. Rietema, a freshman from Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids Christian HS), dished out 209 assists (11.0 per game) in five matches for the week, and added 32 digs and 12 blocks.
