ST. LOUIS, MO - The Calvin College women’s volleyball team has succeeded on the court this season. They won a share of the MIAA conference championship for the first time since 2008. They have reached the Elite Eight for the first time since 1992 with a stunning upset victory over 2nd ranked Wittenberg University at Wittenberg’s Pam Evan’s Smith Arena last week Saturday. The Knight’s have not only succeeded on the court this year. On Thursday afternoon, Calvin went to a crisis care nursery center in St. Louis to spend time with the kids there. The event was set up by the NCAA as part of its community service outreach program at NCAA Championship events. Later Thursday night, the team attended a championships banquet in downtown St. Louis where senior Kim Wigboldy and junior Erin Vander Plas gave a speech on behalf of the team.

SPRINGFIELD, OH - The third time proved to be the charm for the Calvin women’s volleyball team. In a stunning upset, the 10th-ranked Knights defeated the second-ranked Wittenberg Tigers on their home floor in the regional final Saturday night by scores of 25-23, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23. With the win, Calvin (29-4) advances to the Elite Eight for the first time since the 1992 season. The Elite Eight will take place at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, which ironically is the same site that Calvin traveled to in 1992 when the Knights reached the NCAA III Final Four. Saturday’s match marked the third meeting between Calvin and Wittenberg in a regional final with the Tigers winning in 2005 (at Wittenberg) and in 2006 (at Calvin). The third meeting in the regional final proved to be a different story however as the Knights came out with determination from the outset, winning the first set with a five-point run after trailing 23-20.

SPRINGFIELD, OH - The Calvin College Knights volleyball team had seen this before. They had won the first round of the NCAA Division III volleyball tournament in straight sets. Last year, Calvin defeated Wittenberg in three sets only to fall to rival Hope in the second round. This year’s team was determined to not meet the same fate. The Knights were up against the number one ranked team in the region; Heidelberg College. Calvin did not meet the same fate, as it rolled to a four set victory over “The Berg” by scores of 25-18, 16-25, 25-18, 25-19. Calvin advances to the regional final where it will play host #2-ranked Wittenberg which defeated Hope in straight sets Friday nights. Saturday’s regional final match will be played at 7:00 Eastern Standard Time at Wittenberg’s Pam Evans Smith Arena. Saturday’s match will mark the third time that Calvin and Wittenberg have met in a regional final with Wittenberg winning the two prior meetings – the first coming in 2005 at Wittenberg and the second coming in 2006 at Calvin.
