For the 16th consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top 25 finish in the final NCAA III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, finishing fifth in the nation in Division III in 2010-11 with a total of 762.25 points. Calvin’s point total and its (placement) finish is its highest-ever in the 16 years of the competition. Calvin is one one of only six schools in the country to finish in the top 25 every year that the competition has been held at the NCAA III level. Joining Calvin in that elite group are Williams, Mass., Amherst, Mass., Middlebury, Vt., the State University of New York at Cortland and Emory, Ga. Williams College, Mass., defended its title as the best athletics program in the nation in Division III by winning its 15th U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup with 1,147 points.

As 2010 begins to wind down, take a moment to enjoy a four-minute highlight video put together earlier this fall by Calvin Media Relations Manager Matt Kucinski. The video captures action of Calvin athletics from the 2010 spring and fall sports seasons. Included in the highlights are clips from the 2010 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the 2010 MIAA women’s tennis tournament and several other events from the fall and spring.

On Thursday, December 16, Calvin women’s volleyball coach Amber Warners will receive the Division III National Coach of the Year Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Warners will receive the award at the 2010 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Kansas City, Mo., site of this year’s NCAA Divison I Volleyball Final Four. The luncheon is held in conjunction with the 2010 AVCA Annual Convention which is held annually at the site of the NCAA Division I Volleyball Final Four. Calvin sports information student assistant Andrew Knot caught up with Warners before she departed for Kansas City and filed the following feature story (click on the headline above for the story).

The latest set of Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup fall sports standings have been released and after an outstanding fall sports campaign, Calvin College stands in second place, just 19 points behind first place Washington University of St. Louis. Calvin has a second place total of 327 points, holding a two-point lead over third place Middlebury (VT). Washington University (MO) leads the list with 336 points.

An NCAA produced highlight video of the 2010 NCAA III Women’s Volleyball Championships in St. Louis, Missouri, is now online. The video includes clips from all seven matches played at Washington University of St. Louis including Calvin’s victories over University of Massachusetts Boston, Juniata and Emory University.

The national champion Calvin women’s volleyball also ranks at the top of the list in two categories in the final 2010 NCAA III statistics released earlier today. Calvin led the nation in blocks-per-set in 2010 (2.8 blocks-per-set) and in hitting percentage with a .313 clip as a team. Calvin also finished 20th nationally in assists-per-set (11.96) and 25th in kills-per-set (12.89). Individually, Calvin junior Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) finished third nationally in hitting percentage (.431), sixth in blocks-per-set (1.37), 10th in points-per-set (5.25) and 23rd in kills-per-set (.406).

For the first time in school history, the Calvin women’s volleyball team has finished number-one in the final AVCA Division III Top 25 poll of the season. The Knights received a unanimous 24 first place votes in the final poll - released this afternoon. During its march through the NCAA III Tournament, Calvin knocked off (then) number-two ranked Wittenberg University, number-three ranked Juniata College and top-ranked Emory University.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (November 23, 2010) – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is proud to announce that Calvin College head women’s volleyball coach Amber Warners has been selected as the 2010 AVCA Division III National Coach of the Year. In her ninth season as the Calvin head coach, Warners helped the Knights to a magical year in 2010. Calvin earned the program’s third MIAA regular season title, took home its first NCAA Regional title since 1992 and captured its first-ever NCAA Division III national championship with a 3-1 victory over Emory on November 22. The Knights’ road to their storybook ending was not an easy one, as the squad knocked off nationally-ranked squads Heidelberg (No. 13), Wittenberg (No.2), UMass-Boston (No. 24), Juniata (T-No.3) and Emory (No.1) in the NCAA postseason alone.

ST. LOUIS, MO - Calvin College freshman setter Megan Rietema came up big for the Calvin women’s volleyball team at the NCAA III Tournamen at Washington University, helping lead the Knights to the national title with a win over top-ranked Emory in the national title match. Rietema scored the final two points in Calvin’s clinching four-set win. Rietema had 37 assists, eight kills, seven digs and a .368 attack percentage in Monday’s win over Emory.
