Calvin Softball Doubleheader With Hope Postponed Because of Weather

Wednesday’s (April 7) softball doubleheader at home against Hope has been postponed because of weather conditions. The doubleheader has been rescheduled for Monday, April 12. The April 12 twinbill at Calvin will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Softball Teams Drops Second Game of Twinbill at Olivet

OLIVET - Calvin dropped the second game of a doubleheader with Olivet, falling 4-2 in a game that had been postponed last Saturday because of weather. Calvin (5-6 overall, 1-3 MIAA) took a 2-0 lead in the first, using a pair of Olivet errors to score two unearned runs. Sophomore Kim VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) led off the inning with a walk and scored on a muffed throw. Senior Whisper Miller (Reed City HS) also reached base on an error and scored on a groundout by junior Sass VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON).

Softball Comes From Behind To Defeat Olivet 5-4

OLIVET - A four-run rally in the top of the seventh inning allowed the Calvin softball team to claim its first MIAA victory of the season as the Knights claimed a 5-4 win in the opener of a doubleheader at Olivet Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 4-1 heading into the seventh, Calvin (5-5 overall, 1-2 MIAA) rallied with a four-run outburst with all four runs coming with two outs.

Softball Swept at Alma in Conference Opener

ALMA - Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at conference rival Alma, falling 4-3 in the opener and 9-0 in the nightcap with the second game limited to five innings because of the mercy rule. Wednesday’s twinbill marked the conference openers for both teams.

Softball Splits in Regular Season Finales in Tucson, AZ

TUCSON, AZ - Calvin closed out its spring break trip by splitting a pair of games Friday morning, falling to Marian (WI) 8-0 before bouncing back to defeat Edgewood 15-0. Heading into conference play next week, the Knights are 4-3 overall.

In the loss to Marian, Calvin managed just one hit which came off the bat of sophomore Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS). Senior Mandy Johnson (Northpointe Christian HS) took the loss for the Knights.

Softball Splits Pair of 2-1 Contests in Tucson, Arizona

TUCSON, AZ - Calvin split a pair of 2-1 game on Wednesday morning, defeating Marian College of Wisconsin and then falling to Edgewood by the same score.

In the win over Marian, Calvin scored two runs in third inning, using RBI singles from sophomore Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS) and freshman Ashley Oosterink (Calvin Christian HS). Marian added a run in the fourth but starter Shelby Mast (Hudsonville HS) was able to keep Marian scoreless the rest of the way as she picked up her third victory of the season, striking out eight and scattering five hits.

Softball Falls to Whitworth College 4-1 In Night Game in the Desert

TUCSON, AZ - Calvin suffered a 4-1 loss to Whitworth college lat Wednesday night in the desert. Whitworth (7-9) scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Calvin (2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, using two Whitworth errors and a sacrifice hit with senior Whisper Miller (Reed City HS) scoring the first run of the game.

Whitworth tied the game at one on a home run in the bottom of the second. In the fifth, the Pirates used three hits and three walks to score three runs.

Softball Edges George Fox 3-2 Behind Late Run From Whisper Miller

TUCSON, AZ - Calvin picked up its second win in as many days with a 3-2 victory over George Fox University Tuesday afternoon. The Knights are now 2-0 on the season. Calvin jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, using an RBI double by junior Sass VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON) that scored sophomore Kim VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and a subsequent RBI single by freshman Aubree Thompson (Grand Rapids Christian HS) that plated VanRooyen.

Shelby Mast Tosses No-Hitter in Collegiate Debut / Hands DeKleine First Win as Calvin Coach

TUCSON, AZ - It’s safe to say that neither Sharon DeKleine or Shelby Mast will forget Monday’s season opener against the Cardinals of Otterbein College. The contest not only marked the Calvin head coaching debut for DeKleine, but also the collegiate debut for Mast who graduated from Hudsonville High School last spring.

In her collegiate debut, Mast tossed a no-hitter in a 7-2 Calvin victory. In the process, she handed DeKleine her first victory as a head college coach.

Calvin Teams and Athletes Receive MIAA Academic Honors

2008-09 Calvin MIAA Academic Honor Roll Listing

A record 10 Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA Team GPA Award for the recently completed 2008-09 academic year. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2008-09 academic year.

Meanwhile 15 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for the fourth straight year.
