Softball Swept by Hot-Hitting Saint Mary’s Club

NOTRE DAME, IN - The Belles of Saint Mary’s flexed their offensive muscles on Wednesday, sweeping a doubleheader from Calvin by scores of 8-2 and 15-0. Saint Mary’s entered Wednesday’s twinbill ranked eighth in the most recent NCAA III statistics in team batting average. The Belles continued to beef up their batting average against Calvin, collecting 27 hits in the two games including seven of the extra-base variety.
Softball Drops Pair of Games to Goshen College in Non-Conference Twinbill

Calvin dropped a pair of non-conference games to the visiting Maples Leafs of Goshen College Tuesday afternoon as the Knights were defeated by scores of 2-1 and 2-0. In the opener, Calvin outhit Goshen 9-5 and freshman Shelby Mast struck out seven Goshen batters but the Maple Leafs scored two unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Calvin grabbed an early 1-0 lead with a run in the third on an RBI single by sophomore Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS).
Softball Upsets Trine To Gain Doubleheader Split

Calvin hit the double-digit plateau in victories in dramatic fashion on Saturday, upsetting regionally-ranked Trine 5-4 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior Mandy Johnson drove in the winning run with a one-out single to right that scored junior Sass VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON) from third base with the winning run. Trailing 4-3, Calvin mounted a seventh inning rally as sophomore Kim VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) reached base on an error and move to second on the errant throw. VandenAkker then moved to third on a wild pitch and scored moments later on a second wild pitch to tie the game. VanRooyen followed with a single up the middle and moved to third on another Trine error, setting up Johnson’s walk-off heroics.

Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Thursday to Aquinas, falling 1-0 and 6-0.
In the first game, Calvin received a fantastic pitching performance from freshman Shelby Mast but a late run in the fifth inning for the Saints sparked their 1-0 victory. The second game saw fatigue take over as Calvin suffered a 6-0 loss, pushing its overall record to 9-18 on the season. Game one of Thursday’s doubleheader against Aquinas went into the fifth inning before a Saint even reached base. Mast gave up a hit and a walk in that inning and on a passed ball with two outs, Aquinas scored the lone run of the game.

Calvin came up just short in a pair of one-run defeats to visiting Cornerstone University Tuesday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex as the Knights were defeated 4-3 and 5-4 with the second game lasting eight innings.
In the opener, Cornerstone (9-28) scored a pair of quick runs in the first inning on the strength of three hits. Calvin (9-15) came back with a run in the fourth as junior Sass VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON) reached base on a lead-off double and later scored on an error.

KENTWOOD - Calvin suffered a pair of defeats to Davenport University on Monday at the Christian Reformed Recreation Center, falling 4-0 and 9-0. Davenport is now 33-11 while Calvin is 9-14. In game one, Davenport scored an unearned run in the third and three more in the sixth, one of which was unearned. Calvin committed four errors in the loss and collected only four hits. Freshman Aubree Thompson (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had two of Calvin’s hits. Freshman Shelby Mast (Hudsonville HS) took the loss, striking out three and walking two.
Softball Splits Games at North Central College Invitational

NAPERVILLE, IL—Calvin split a pair of non-conference games on Saturday at the North Central College Invitational, defeating Monmouth College 8-0 and then falling to North Central 9-0. Calvin is now 9-13 on the year.
In the win over Monmouth (10-15), freshman Shelby Mast (Hudsonville HS), tossed a three-hit shutout. The shutout was the third of the year and second of the week for Mast who struck out 10 batters and walked three.

ELGIN, IL - Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Judson University Friday night, falling 9-1 and 13-2. The Knights are now 8-11 on the season heading into Saturday games against Monmouth and North Central. In Friday’s opener, Judson (22-18) scored three runs in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth to put the game away. Calvin’s lone run came in the top of the third on a solo homerun by freshman Kyleigh Fri (Allendale HS) - her first as a collegiate player.

Calvin picked up a pair of conference victory on Tuesday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex, defeating Kalamazoo 10-0 in five innings and 13-3 in six innings. The Knights are now 8-9 overall and 4-6 in MIAA play.

Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the visiting Flying Dutch of Hope on Monday, falling 4-0 and 4-1. Monday’s twinbill marked a meeting of coach and pupil as longtime Hope coach Karla Wolters went head-to-head against first-year Calvin softball coach Sharon DeKleine who was an All-American shortstop and pitcher for Wolters when Wolters served as Calvin’s head softball coach in the mid 1980’s. DeKleine also served as Wolter’s pitching coach last year at Hope.
