Softball Drops a Pair at Goshen College

GOSHEN, IN - Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Goshen College Saturday afternoon to fall to 2-10 on the year. In the opener, Goshen broke a 4-4 tie with a five-run sixth, en-route to a 9-4 win. In game two, the host Maple Leafs used a four-run third inning to pull away for the win. Calvin belted three homeruns in the twinbill to boost its season homerun total to nine.
Softball Closes Out Spring Trip With Dramatic Win Over St. Catherines

TUCSON, AZ - Calvin concluded its trip to Arizona with a split of games on Thursday. Calvin opened the day with a 10-2 loss to Carleton College but rebounded to defeat St. Catherines University 14-13 in eight innings. The Knights will return to Michigan with a 2-8 overall record. In the win over St. Catherines, Calvin rebounded from deficits twice. Calvin trailed by four runs early on but tied the game on a grand-slam homerun by freshman Lina Avila. The game then went into extra innings and the Knights fell behind by four runs. Calvin refused to fold however and answered with five runs in the bottom half to win the game with sophomore Lauren Spoelstra driving in the game-winning run on a sacrifice hit. Junior Marie Prins also had a big day at the plate with five hits and three RBI’s while freshman Shelby Sheehan also collected four hits in the win. Freshman Danae Miedema went the distance for the Knights, collecting her first collegiate win.

TUCSON, AZ - The Calvin softball team opened its season on Saturday by splitting a pair of games, defeating St. Olaf College 12-6 and falling to Otterbein College 11-3. In the win over St. Olaf, freshman Lina Avila went the distance to pick the pitching victory. Sophomore Hannah DeWeerd belted a homerun - the fourth of her collegiate career. In game two, freshman Danae Miedema and sophomore Shelby Mast split time in the pitching circle with Miedema taking the loss. A number of Calvin errors led to six unearned runs by Otterbein. Calvin is back in action on Monday, facing Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 2 p.m. (PST) and Lewis and Clark at 4 p.m. (PST).

The 2011 Calvin softball team will look to improve upon a 2010 season that saw the Knights finish 11-24 overall and tied for sixth place in the final MIAA standings with a 6-10 conference mark. Of Calvin’s six league victories, two were against teams near the top of the league standings as the Knights upset third-place Trine and second place Adrian during the conference campaign while losing a narrow 4-3 decision to conference champion Alma. A large part of Calvin’s 2010 success was due to the pitching of Shelby Mast (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) who fashioned a 10-18 record along with an impressive 2.42 earned run average - en route to receiving All-MIAA second team honors.

Calvin to Host Softball Clinic on January 22 at Huizenga Tennis and Track Center

Head Coach DeKleine, Coach Brooks and the members of the Calvin softball team would like to invite you to Calvin College for a high school preseason softball clinic January 22 at Calvin’s Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. The clinic will focus on the fundamentals as well as more advanced skills used in the game of softball. Participants registering before Jan 14 will receive a clinic t-shirt . Day of registration/late registration cost will be $5.00 more and entries received after January 14 will not receive a t-shirt.

Calvin's MIAA Academic Honor Roll Recipients
The 2009-10 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 143 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list.
The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2009-10 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom. This year’s Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the distinction four consecutive years. Of the students, 19 are from Calvin.
Shelby Mast Named to All-MIAA Second Team in Softball

Calvin College freshman Shelby Mast (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) has been selected to the All-MIAA second team in softball. A pitcher, Mast had an outstanding freshman campaign for the Knights, appearing in 32 of a possible 35 games and recording an ERA of 2.43. Overall, Mast was 10-18 which included a no-hitter in her season debut on March 22 against Otterbein College. In conference play, Mast led the MIAA in innings pitched (88.1) and strikeouts (76).

Softball Upsets Regionally-Ranked Adrian in Season Finale - Finishes Sixth in Final MIAA Standings

(Photo by Sandy Palmatter) ADRIAN - The Calvin softball team closed out its 2010 campaign on a high note, upsetting regionally-ranked Adrian to gain a doubleheader split in its regular season finale. Calvin upset the host Bulldogs 2-1 in the opener of a doubleheader Saturday and then fought valiently before falling 4-3 in game two. With the split, Calvin moved up into a tie for sixth place in the final MIAA standings at 6-10 in league play. Calvin’s conference finish was an improvement of two spots from a year ago while its conference win total was an improvement of six wins from its 2009 league campaign. At 11-24 overall, Calvin also upped its final season win total by seven over its 2009 win total.

NOTRE DAME, IN - The Belles of Saint Mary’s flexed their offensive muscles on Wednesday, sweeping a doubleheader from Calvin by scores of 8-2 and 15-0. Saint Mary’s entered Wednesday’s twinbill ranked eighth in the most recent NCAA III statistics in team batting average. The Belles continued to beef up their batting average against Calvin, collecting 27 hits in the two games including seven of the extra-base variety.
