ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin softball squad suffered a pair of tough defeats at the hands of the Trine Thunder on Friday. The Knights were defeated by Trine 4-0 in game one and then fell 13-0 in game two. Calvin closes out its season on Saturday, hosting Saint Mary’s at 1 p.m.

The Calvin softball team dropped a pair of games to nationally-ranked and league-leading Alma Monday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex. In game one, Calvin dropped a 4-0 decision. in game two, Calvin fell by a 6-1 score. the Knights are now 4-8 in league play heading into a conference doubleheader at Trine Wednesday afternoon.

ALBION - A dramatic two-run eighth inning allowed Calvin to gain a doubleheader split at Albion Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Hannah DeWeerd looped a bases-loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Calvin to a 6-5 game two victory. The win allowed the Knights to salvage a split after falling in Saturday’s opener 3-2. DeWeerd had a bid day at the plate, going 5-for-8 during the twinbill with three runs batted in. In the opener, she belted her third homerun of the spring - a solo shot in the second - that lifted Calvin into a 1-0 lead.
Mast Tosses One-Hit Shutout As Softball Splits With Olivet

Calvin rode the right arm of sophomore pitcher Shelby Mast to gain a doubleheader split over visiting Olivet Thursday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex. Mast tossed a complete-game one-hit shutout in the opener Thursday as the Knights gained a 2-0 victory. She then allowed just five hits and one run in game two but the one run proved to be enough for Olivet as it held on for a 1-0 win over the Knights. The game one victory by Calvin allowed the Knights to snap a 10-game losing streak. Calvin is now 3-5 in the MIAA, good for sixth place in the current league standings.
Softball Drops Twinbill to Finlandia

Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader with visiting Finlandia University Thursday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex, falling 7-3 and 16-6. Finlandia (19-9) entered the doubleheader with 19 homeruns to its credit and clubbed four more during the afternoon including three in game two. Calvin will travel to Naperville, Illinois, on Saturday where it will face Monmouth College in a morning game and host North Central in an afternoon game.
Softball Drops Both Ends of a Doubleheader at Hope

HOLLAND - Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader at rival Hope Wednesday afternoon, falling 5-4 and 6-0. Calvin used a late rally in game one to tie the game 4-4 and had runners in scoring position in the top of the seventh but could not take the lead. Hope then scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to win the game. All five of Hope’s runs in game one were unearned as the Knights committed six errors. Calvin collected seven hits in game one including a two-run homer by freshman Lina Avila in the sixth. The homer was the sixth of the spring for Avila. In game two, Hope limited Calvin to just three hits while scoring four runs in the second and two more in the fifth. Calvin (4-18 overall, 2-4 MIAA) returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Finlandia University in a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.

BLOOMINGTON, IL - Calvin dropped a pair of games at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament on Saturday, falling to the host Titans 9-4 and then falling to Wisconsin-Oshkosh 1-2. Calvin hit a pair of homeruns on Saturday - one by Bekah Kline and the other by Marie Prins. The Knights have now hit 15 homeruns as a team this year. Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it travels to rival Hope for a 3:30 p.m. contest.

BLOOMINGTON, IL - The Calvin softball team dropped its opening game at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament, falling to Wisconsin-Oshkosh 7-4. Oshkosh scored two runs in the firt, two in th second and one in the third to grab a 5-0 lead. Calvin came back with a run in the fourth and three in the sixth as junior Marie Prins hit her second homerun of the season while freshman Lina Avila belted a three-run homer - her fifth of the year in the sixth. Oshkosh (13-5) scored single runs in the fifth and sixth however to stay ahead of the Knights. The Knights will face host Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday at 10 a.m. followed by a 2 p.m. rematch against Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Second Game Softball Rally Comes Up Just Short Against Nationally-Ranked Adrian

The Calvin softball dropped both ends of a doubleheader against nationally-ranked and unbeaten Adrian College Thursday afternoon at Gainey Field. Adrian took the opener 10-0 in five innings but then needed a seventh-inning rally to top the Knights 2-1 in game two. In the opener, Adrian collected 11 hits and used five Calvin errors to pull away for the win. In game two however, Calvin sophomore starter Shelby Mast pitched a gem, allowing just one run over the first six innings with Calvin tying the game in the top of the sixth on a two-out single to right by freshman Lina Avila that brought home junior Marie Prins. Adrian countered with a two-out rally of its own in the seventh, using a single and a triple to win the game. Calvin (4-12 overall, 2-2 MIAA) will now prepare to compete at a weekend tournament hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University.

KALAMAZOO—The Calvin softball team opened its 2011 MIAA campaign with a doubleheader sweep at Kalamazoo Tuesday afternoon, winning by scores of 9-1 and 8-0. Sophomore Shelby Mast struck out 11 in a complete-game pitching victory in game one while freshman Danae Miedema had a complete-game pitching victory in game two. Freshman Shelby Sheehan had five hits in the twinbill while sophomore Lina Avila had four hits including her team-leading fourth home run of the spring. Sophomore Hannah DeWeerd also belted her second homerun of the spring during the doubleheader. Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Adrian in a conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. at the Gainey Athletic Complex.
