Calvin Softball Falls in Extra-Innings to Trinity (CT) - Defeats Gallaudet in Mercy-Rule Win

CLERMONT, FL - Calvin split its Monday games in Florida, dropping an 8-5 decision in 10 innings to Trinity of Connecticut before coming back to defeat Gallaudet University 15-1 in five innings. The Knights are now 3-1 on the young season. Calvin has games scheduled against Bowdoin and Framingham State scheduled for Tuesday.
Calvin Softball Upsets Eighth-Ranked Tufts University - Tops Thomas to Start Out 2-0

CLERMONT, FL - The Calvin softball team opened its season with a bang, defeating Thomas College of Maine 6-0 and nationally-ranked Tufts University 6-4. In the win over Thomas, Calvin received a two-hit shutout from junior pitcher Caitlin Callow (Rochester/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) while freshman catcher Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) belted a two-run RBI double while sophomore Merin Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Ashley Jakus (Muskegon/Muskegon Reeths-Puffer HS) had two hits apiece. In the victory over eighth-ranked Tufts, junior Lina Avila (Lakewood,CA/Valley Christian HS) stole the show, belting a two-run homer in the first and tossing a complete game victory in the pitching circle. Calvin added four runs in the in the second inning and held on from there to gain the win.The Knights are scheduled to take on Trinity College (CT) and Washington and Jefferson (PA) in single games on Monday.
Calvin Holds MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings Lead

Calvin College holds the lead in the latest set of MIAA Commissioner’s Cup standings as well as in the standings for the MIAA Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Awards. Calvin has a first place total of 147 points in the MIAA Commissioner’s Cup standings with Hope second with 126 points. In the men’s individual (all-sports) standings, Calvin has 68 points with Hope second with 56 points. In the women’s individual (all-sports) standings, Calvin has 79 points with Hope second with 70 points. This year, Calvin has captured nine MIAA regular season championships, winning league titles in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s basketball and women’s swimming and diving.

Calvin’s season opening doubleheader with Centre College was postponed on Friday because of snow. The Knights will now attempt to play three single games on Saturday in Kentucky, facing Manchester, Centre and Spalding.
Calvin Softball Team Picked to Finish Seventh in Preseason MIAA Coaches’ Poll

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association softball race is highly competitive every spring, and this season appears to be no different. Defending MIAA champion Trine and Alma, which won the conference tournament last season, are the co-favorites to win this season’s championship in a preseason poll of the league’s coaches. They each received 12 points in the poll, with the Thunder capturing five first-place votes and the Scots four. Coaches could not vote for their own team. Calvin was picked to finish seven the preseason poll. The Knights will feature a blend of veterans and newcomers this spring. Calvin will open its season this weekend with a Friday night doubleheader at Centre College. Calvin to Host Winter Skills Softball Clinic February 2

The Calvin softball program will offer a spring training skills clinic on February 2 for grades 7-12. Campers will work side by side with Calvin athletes and focus on the fundamental skills as well as more advanced skills used in the game of softball. Campers will also participate in team competition. The camp will be held inside Calvin’s Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. Campers will also participate in team competitions.

Calvin Takes Early Lead in MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings

A record-setting fall sports season has allowed Calvin to build an early lead in the MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings. Through the recently completed MIAA fall sports season, Calvin leads the standings with 100 points, four points better than Hope. In the MIAA Women’s All-Sports Standings, Calvin has a first place total of 58 points with Hope second with 53. Hope leads the MIAA Men’s All-Sports standings with 43 points, one point better than Calvin. This fall, Calvin captured a record six MIAA titles – winning conference crowns in men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf and volleyball.

2011-12 MIAA Academic Honor Roll
The 2011-12 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic - Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 123 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list. The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2010-11 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom.

Calvin Summer Knightfile Magazine
The latest edition of Calvin’s Knightfile Magazine is now online. The edition features Calvin’s recently completed spring sports season headlined by a look at Calvin’s long-standing steeplechase tradition in track and field. Other sports covered include men’s and women’s tennis, baseball and softball. This spring, Calvin senior Nick Kramer captured the national championship in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
