CLERMONT, FL - Calvin split a pair of games on Thursday on its final day of its spring trip, falling to Wesleyan University 4-0 before coming back to top Wellesley 3-1. The Knights conclude their spring trip with a 7-3 record. In the loss to Wesleyan, junior Caitlin Callow (Rochester/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) took the loss. Both teams had just four hits but Wesleyan capitalized on four walks and two Calvin errors. Sophomore Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) also saw time in relief. Junior Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) had two of Calvin’s four hits while junior Ashley Jakus (Muskegon/Muskegon Reeths-Puffer HS) and sophomore Christie VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville HS) had one hit apiece. Calvin jumped out to a 2-1 lead on a two-run RBI single by freshman catcher Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) in the bottom of the third. Calvin tacked on an insurance run on an RBI single by Avila. Calvin will now prepare for its home opener next Wednesday when it is scheduled to host DePauw University in a non-conference twinbill at 3:30 p.m.

CLERMONT, FL - Calvin improved to 6-2 on the year with victories over Manchester and Benedictine University Wednesday afternoon. Calvin opened with a 5-0 victory over Manchester and then handed New England College an 11-3 defeat in five innings late Wednesday afternoon.In the win over Manchester, junior Caitlin Callow (Rochester/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) tossed a four-hit shutout while striking out three without a walk. Calvin scored all five of its runs in the top of the first inning, using three hits and two Manchester errors to take command.In the win over New England, junior Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) picked up the win to improve to 4-0 on the year. She struck out five and scattered six hits in a game limited to five innings because of the mercy-rule. Sophomore Catherine Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) belted a two-run homer while senior Merin Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) went 3-for-3 with a triple and two singles. She also batted in three runs. Sophomore Christie VanderMeer also had two hits and three runs batted in. Avila had two hits as well.

CLERMONT, FL - Calvin split a pair of softball games on Tuesday, falling to Bowdoin 6-2 and defeating Framingham State 9-1 in five innings.In the loss to Bowdoin, Calvin (4-2) fell behind 4-0 after four innings but came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Bowdoin then scored a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Junior Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) belted her second home run of the spring but Calvin mustered only four hits in the loss. Junior Caitlin Callow (Rochester/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year. Sophomore Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutherans HS) split time in the circle for the Knights in relief of Callow. In the win over Framingham State, Calvin scored once in the third, five times in the fourth and three times in the fifth. Avila hit another home run in the win as did junior Janelle Agren (Cadillac/Cadillac HS). Sophomore Christie VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville HS) had two hits and two runs batted in as did freshman Megan Rozeveld (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS). Junior Ashley Jakus (Muskegon/Muskegon-Reeths Puffer HS) and freshman Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) also had two hits apiece. Calvin will face Manchester and Benedictine in single games on Wednesday.
Avila got the victory in the pitching circle, striking out two and allowing just three hits. Avila is now 3-0 on the year.

CLERMONT, FL - Calvin split its Monday games in Florida, dropping an 8-5 decision in 10 innings to Trinity of Connecticut before coming back to defeat Gallaudet University 15-1 in five innings. The Knights are now 3-1 on the young season. Calvin has games scheduled against Bowdoin and Framingham State scheduled for Tuesday.

CLERMONT, FL - The Calvin softball team opened its season with a bang, defeating Thomas College of Maine 6-0 and nationally-ranked Tufts University 6-4. In the win over Thomas, Calvin received a two-hit shutout from junior pitcher Caitlin Callow (Rochester/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) while freshman catcher Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) belted a two-run RBI double while sophomore Merin Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Ashley Jakus (Muskegon/Muskegon Reeths-Puffer HS) had two hits apiece. In the victory over eighth-ranked Tufts, junior Lina Avila (Lakewood,CA/Valley Christian HS) stole the show, belting a two-run homer in the first and tossing a complete game victory in the pitching circle. Calvin added four runs in the in the second inning and held on from there to gain the win.The Knights are scheduled to take on Trinity College (CT) and Washington and Jefferson (PA) in single games on Monday.

Calvin College holds the lead in the latest set of MIAA Commissioner’s Cup standings as well as in the standings for the MIAA Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Awards. Calvin has a first place total of 147 points in the MIAA Commissioner’s Cup standings with Hope second with 126 points. In the men’s individual (all-sports) standings, Calvin has 68 points with Hope second with 56 points. In the women’s individual (all-sports) standings, Calvin has 79 points with Hope second with 70 points. This year, Calvin has captured nine MIAA regular season championships, winning league titles in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s basketball and women’s swimming and diving.

Calvin’s season opening doubleheader with Centre College was postponed on Friday because of snow. The Knights will now attempt to play three single games on Saturday in Kentucky, facing Manchester, Centre and Spalding.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. Ė The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association softball race is highly competitive every spring, and this season appears to be no different. Defending MIAA champion Trine and Alma, which won the conference tournament last season, are the co-favorites to win this seasonís championship in a preseason poll of the leagueís coaches. They each received 12 points in the poll, with the Thunder capturing five first-place votes and the Scots four. Coaches could not vote for their own team. Calvin was picked to finish seven the preseason poll. The Knights will feature a blend of veterans and newcomers this spring. Calvin will open its season this weekend with a Friday night doubleheader at Centre College. The Calvin softball program will offer a spring training skills clinic on February 2 for grades 7-12. Campers will work side by side with Calvin athletes and focus on the fundamental skills as well as more advanced skills used in the game of softball. Campers will also participate in team competition. The camp will be held inside Calvin’s Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. Campers will also participate in team competitions.

A record-setting fall sports season has allowed Calvin to build an early lead in the MIAA Commissionerís Cup Standings. Through the recently completed MIAA fall sports season, Calvin leads the standings with 100 points, four points better than Hope. In the MIAA Womenís All-Sports Standings, Calvin has a first place total of 58 points with Hope second with 53. Hope leads the MIAA Menís All-Sports standings with 43 points, one point better than Calvin. This fall, Calvin captured a record six MIAA titles Ė winning conference crowns in menís and womenís soccer, volleyball, menís and womenís cross country, menís golf and volleyball.
