Thursday, April 07, 2011
The Calvin softball dropped both ends of a doubleheader against nationally-ranked and unbeaten Adrian College Thursday afternoon at Gainey Field. Adrian took the opener 10-0 in five innings but then needed a seventh-inning rally to top the Knights 2-1 in game two. In the opener, Adrian collected 11 hits and used five Calvin errors to pull away for the win. In game two however, Calvin sophomore starter Shelby Mast pitched a gem, allowing just one run over the first six innings with Calvin tying the game in the top of the sixth on a two-out single to right by freshman Lina Avila that brought home junior Marie Prins. Adrian countered with a two-out rally of its own in the seventh, using a single and a triple to win the game. Calvin (4-12 overall, 2-2 MIAA) will now prepare to compete at a weekend tournament hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University.
