After a pair of tough losses against St. Mary’s on Thursday in its conference opener, Calvin opened up its home portion of the conference schedule Saturday against Albion in a doubleheader. Albion took both games from the Knights, winning 3-0 and 3-1.Calvin now looks forward to Wednesday when it will travel to Trinity Christian College to face the Trolls in a pair of non-conference games.

NOTRE DAME, IN – Calvin suffered a pair of hard-luck defeats at Saint Mary’s Thursday afternoon, falling 1-0 and 7-5 in the MIAA opening games for the Knights. In game one, Saint Mary’s (15-7 overall, 2-2 MIAA) scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim the win. Calvin had two runners aboard in the sixth but could not score. In the top of the seventh, Calvin placed runners on first and third with one out but again failed to score. In the bottom half of the inning, Saint Mary’s used a single, a Calvin error and then a double to bring home the game-winning run. Sophomore Lina Avila (2-7) took the loss, striking out two and walking one while scattering six hits. In game two, Calvin (5-13 overall, 0-2 MIAA) and Saint Mary’s were tied 4-4 headed into the fifth inning but the host Belles scored three times in the top of the fifth to build a 7-4 lead and never looked back. Freshman Trista Brownlee (3-7) took the loss for Calvin. Calvin had six hits in defeat including two off the bat of freshman Catherine Hillbrands.Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Albion in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
Softball Drops Pair of Games at Wheaton Invitational

WHEATON, IL - The Calvin softball team dropped a pair of games at the Wheaton Invitational Saturday afternoon, falling to the University of Chicago 8-0 and to host Wheaton 6-0. In the loss to Chicago, Calvin was limited to four hits. Sophomore Lina Avila (2-5) took the loss. Calvin’s hits came from Christie VanderMeer, Marie Prins, Catherine Hillbrands and Danae Miedema. In the loss to Wheaton, Calvin gave up 12 hits and was credited for three. Trista Brownlee took the loss for the Knights. Picking Up hits for Calvin were Merin Cok, Miedema and Meghan Smith. The Knights are now 5-11 on the year and return to action next Thursday at Saint Mary’s College.
