ALBION - Calvin got back to the .500 mark in league play and improved to 16-12 overall with a doubleheader sweep at Albion Wednesday, winning by scores of 10-0 and 9-0. Both games were shortened to five innings because of the mercy-rule. In game one, Calvin used an eight-run third inning to blow the game open. Junior Ashley Jakus (Muskegon/Muskegon CC) scored three runs while sophomore Christie VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville HS), junior Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) and freshman Megan Rozeveld (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) had two hits apiece. All three players also drove in two runs apiece.Sophomore Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) was credited with the pitching victory, striking out three and walking two, upping her season record to 4-2. In game two, Calvin scored seven runs in the bottom of the first capped off by a solo home run by sophomore Merin Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). VanderMeer and Brownlee had two hits apiece. Sophomore Catherine Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a run-scoring triple. Freshman Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) also drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double. Junior Caitlin Callow (Muskegon/Muskegon CC) was the winning pitcher as she scattered five hits in improving to 5-5 on the year.Calvin will now prepare to travel to rival Hope on Saturday for a 1 p.m. twinbill.

KALAMAZOO - Calvin got back on the winning track with a doubleheader sweep at Kalamazoo Monday afternoon, winning 8-0 and 3-1. The Knights are now 14-12 overall and 5-7 in the MIAA. In game one, junior Lina
Avila went all six innings for the Knights to improve to 7-5 on the year while lowering her season earned run average to 2.78. Calvin had 14 hits in the game one win led by sophomore Christie VanderMeer and freshman Megan Rozeveld who were both 3-for-4 at the plate. Sophomore Trista Brownlee, freshman Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) and Avila all had two hits apiece. In game two, junior Caitlin Callow (Muskegon/Muskegon Community College) went all seven innings for Calvin to pick up the win and improve to 4-5 on the year. Calvin had seven hits including three of the extra-base variety. In addition to the double by Agren, Roseveld had a double and sophomore Catherine Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a triple. Calvin will now prepare for a conference doubleheader at Albion on Wednesday scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.

ANGOLA, IN - Calvin dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader at nationally-ranked Trine University Saturday afternoon, falling by scores of 6-4 and 13-4. The Knights are now 12-12 overall and 3-7 in the MIAA. In game one, Calvin outhit Trine 7-6. Sophomore Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) and junior Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) had two hits apiece. Avila, Junior Jannelle Agren (Cadillac/Muskegon Community College) and sophomore Merin Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) all had doubles. Avila took the loss in the circle for the Knights, striking out five and walking four to fall to 6-5 on the year.In game two, Brownlee and freshman Megan Rozeveld (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) hit homers. Bronwlee had two hits in the game to raise her season batting average to .400. Brownlee (3-2) also took the pitching loss for Calvin with junior Caitlin Callow (Muskegon/Muskegon-Reeths Puffer HS) also seeing time in relief. Calvin is back in action on Monday as it travels to Kalamazoo to face Kalamazoo College in a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. The game will be played at Western Michigan University’s softball complex.

Calvin split a doubleheader with visiting Saint Mary’s Tuesday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex, winning the opener 8-2 before dropping the nightcap 3-2. Calvin is now 12-10 on the year and 3-5 in the MIAA.
In game one, junior Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) retired the final 11 batters she faced while belting a two-run homer and a double to lead the Knights to the victory. Avila went 3-for-4 at the plate while allowing just two hits. Calvin had 13 hits in the victory. Freshman catcher Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) also went 3-for-4 while driving in three runs. Sophomore Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) and freshmen Megan Rozeveld (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and Ashley Jakus (Muskegon/Muskegon Reeths-Puffer HS) had two hits apiece. Sophomore Christie VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville HS) also scored three runs. Avila also started game two in the pitcher’s circle and tossed shutout ball through the first four innings. Avila also gave Calvin a 1-0 lead with a leadoff home run in the second inning. In the top of the fifth, VanderMeer led off with a double and later scored on a double by Brownlee. Saint Mary’s (13-11 overall, 3-1-0 MIAA) answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth however including one run that was unearned. Calvin outhit Saint Mary’s 8-5 in game two but stranded eight runners. Calvin is back in action on Thursday as it travels to Goshen for a non-conference doubleheader slated to start at 3:30 p.m.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin third baseman Janelle Agren its Position Player of the Week and for games played through April 13. Agren, a junior from Cadillac (Cadillac HS), went for 4-6 with four runs scored and five RBIs in leading Calvin to an MIAA sweep of Olivet. In the opener, she belted two doubles and a single, driving four runs in a 17-4 win over the Comets, then followed with a home run in the nightcap in Calvin’s 13-5 victory. Agren is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Calvin is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Saint Mary’s in a conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. at Gainey Field.

Calvin softball hosted the Comets of Olivet Friday afternoon for a conference doubleheader. Calvin used two big innings of six runs and eight runs, respectively, to defeat Olivet in game one, 17-4. In game two, aggressive base running and 16 total stolen bases aided the Knights to a 13-5 victory. In game one, Calvin was led offensively by junior Janelle Agren who was 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored. Junior Lina Avila was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and two runs scored while VanderMeer was 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. Junior Caitlin Callow earned the win in the circle for the Knights. In game two, sophomore Catherine Hilbrands was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI while Brownlee was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, one RBI and five stolen bases. Brownlee also earned the win in the circle, pitching four and two-thirds innings, striking out three, allowing two hits and giving up only one earned run.

On Wednesday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in the Van Noord Arena, the Calvin C Club welcomes student-athletes, coaches and fans of the Knights to an evening of celebrating Calvin athletics. There will be desserts and refreshments, trophy displays, a “Year in Review” video and the presentation of 13 awards, culminating in the Tiemersma and Beré Awards for female and male athlete of the year. Registration for current Calvin student-athletes is available through their coaches, and registration for all others is available online now! WHEATON, IL – Calvin snapped a six-game losing skid with an 8-4 victory at Wheaton College Saturday afternoon. The Knights are now 9-9 on the year. Earlier in the day, Calvin dropped a hard-fought 2-0 decision to Robert Morris College of Chicago in a game played at Wheaton. In the win over Wheaton, sophomore pitcher Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) went all seven innings, scattering 14 hits. Calvin had nine hits and capitalized on three Wheaton errors. Brownlee also had two hits and scored three runs in the win. Freshman Ashley Riemersma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a pair of hits. Riemersma, sophomore Merin Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) all drove in two runs apiece in the win. In the loss to Robert Morris, Calvin collected just two hits. Robert Morris (13-11) scored one run in the fifth and one run in the seventh. Junior Caitlin Callow (Muskegon/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) took the loss in the pitchers’ circle for Calvin.Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Olivet in a conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.

Calvin softball hosted the Scots of Alma on Friday afternoon for a pair of games at Gainey Field. The Scots came into the doubleheader undefeated in conference play while the Knights had yet to tally a win against an MIAA opponent. After the pair of games, the teams left the same way they had come in, with Alma remaining perfect in the MIAA and Calvin still seeking its first conference victory. Calvin dropped the opener 10-0 and the nightcap 9-1. The Knights drop to 8-8 overall and 0-4 in the MIAA while Alma is now 15-6 and 6-0 in conference play. Calvin travels to Wheaton tomorrow for non-conference games against host Wheaton and Robert Morris. The Knights resume MIAA-play next week Wednesday with a home doubleheader against Olivet.

The Calvin softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader with visiting Adrian Thursday at the Gainey Athletic Complex, losing the opener 8-4 and the nightcap 5-2. Defensive miscues cost Calvin in game one as the Knights committed six errors that led to five unearned runs. Calvin outhit Adrian (6-10, 2-0 MIAA) 7-6 but could not come up with enough timely hits to keep pace with the Bulldogs on the scoreboard. Calvin took an early 2-0 lead on a two-run RBI double to right by junior Lina Avila but Adrian countered with a run in the third and four in the fifth to build a 5-2 lead. Calvin came back with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth but Adrian answered with three in the top of the sixth to regain command. Sophomore Trista Brownlee had two of Calvin’s seven hits. Sophomore Christie VanderMeer also had a triple and scored a run. Avila took the loss for Calvin in the circle, allowing six hits in seven innings of work. In game two, Adrian jumped out to an early lead again, scoring four in the second. The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the fourth. Calvin (8-6 overall, 0-2 MIAA) scored single runs in the third and seventh. Both teams had six hits and committed two errors. Adrian reaped the benefits of five walks by the Calvin pitching staff however. Junior Caitlin Callow took the loss for Calvin. VanderMeer went 2-for-4 for the Knights with an RBI.
