In a long morning and early afternoon of prelims on Friday, Calvin saw nine individuals advance to the finals in 12 events. Despite a strong day in the pool, the women are in fourth place with 242 points while the men dropped from second to fourth with 263 points. Northern Michigan held its lead on the women’s side with 348 points while Grand Valley kept the top spot on the men’s side with 423 points. The Calvin women had two first place performances as senior Elizabeth Counsell won the 100 breaststroke and senior Samantha Klaasen won the three-meter board with a score of 438.65 points.

Calvin’s three-day Winter Invitational began Thursday evening. Teams participating included Division I Valparaiso University, Division II schools Grand Valley State University, Hillsdale College, Northern Michigan University and University of Indianapolis as well as MIAA schools Kalamazoo, Olivet, and Saint Mary’s and fellow Division III school Wabash College. The Calvin women head into day two in fifth place with 49 points. Northern Michigan leads with 91 total points. The Calvin men are in second after the first day of competition with 75 points, Grand Valley leads with 127. The biggest highlight for Calvin came on the men’s side as freshman Caleb Meinderstma shattered the Calvin men’s 1650 yard freestyle record by swimming a 16:16.47, good for second individually. The previous record was held by Brad Flikkema, set in 1998 at 16:28.80. Freshman Aaron Venema was barely off that record time, swimming to a fourth place time of 16:31.06. Senior Mathias Bares added points for the Knights, finishing in 14th overall at 17:03.35.

Calvin will host the fourth annual Calvin Winter Swimming and Diving Invitational this Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Calvin Sports Information Office recently caught up with Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos to preview the competition as well as get an update on the Calvin swimming and diving program as a whole. A record-setting fall sports season has allowed Calvin to build an early lead in the MIAA Commissionerís Cup Standings. Through the recently completed MIAA fall sports season, Calvin leads the standings with 100 points, four points better than Hope. In the MIAA Womenís All-Sports Standings, Calvin has a first place total of 58 points with Hope second with 53. Hope leads the MIAA Menís All-Sports standings with 43 points, one point better than Calvin. This fall, Calvin captured a record six MIAA titles Ė winning conference crowns in menís and womenís soccer, volleyball, menís and womenís cross country, menís golf and volleyball.

DETROIT Ė The Calvin menís and womenís swimming and diving teams were both defeated by Division II Wayne State University in non-conference dual meet action Saturday night. In the menís meet, Calvin was defeated 159-77. In the womenís meet, Calvin fell by a 149-89 score. In the womenís meet, sophomore Kathryn Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN/Moundsview HS) won the 1,650 freestyle (18:02.50) while freshman Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.50). Calvinís 200 freestyle relay team of senior Rachel Colasurdo (Chesapeake, VA), senior Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS), freshman Leah Meyer (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and Wrobel won in a time of 1:43.91. On the menís side, freshman Aaron Venema (Grand Haven/Grand Haven HS) captured a win in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:52.76. Sophomore Travis Vincent (Novi/Novi HS) also won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.49). Calvinís 200 freestyle relay team of Venema, freshman Brandon Muma (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern HS), freshman Tyler Ligon (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Alex Baumann (Holland/Holland Christian HS) won in a time of 1:31.33.
Both teams will now prepare to host their own Calvin Winter Invitational November 29-to-December 1.

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams continue to rise in the Division III national rankings. The Calvin women’s team is ranked 11th - up four spots from a week ago in the most recent Collegeswimming.com Division III Top 25 poll. On the men’s side, Calvin is ranked 16th - up nine spots from a week ago. Both teams are competing in non-conference dual meet action this evening at Division II Wayne State University.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. Ė The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvinís Johnson Cochran and Kalamazooís Lauren Seroka as its Athletes of the Week in swimming and diving for meets through November 3. Cochran, a freshman from Mount Vernon, Ohio (Mount Vernon HS), took first place in both breaststroke events as the Knights defeated Wheaton, Ill., 163-117, in a nonleague dual meet. He won the 100-yard breaststroke in :58.23 and 200 breaststroke in 2:11.1, with both times ranking at the top of the MIAA early in the season. Cochran is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career.

WHEATON, IL - The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were in action for dual meets at Wheaton on Saturday. In the men’s competition, 25th-ranked Calvin recorded a 163-117 victory to move to 3-1 on the season. On the women’s side, 15th-ranked Calvin fell to eighth-ranked Wheaton 157-131 to fall to 2-2 on the season. Both Calvin teams are back in action on Friday, traveling to Division II Wayne State University for non-conference dual meet action at 5 p.m.

ALMA - The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams picked up dual meet victories at Alma Friday evening with the women’s team winning 172-71 and the men’s team winning 145-77. Both Calvin teams travel to Wheaton on Saturday for 1 p.m. dual meets.

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have cracked the first set of Division III Top 25 rankings released by Collegeswimming.com. The Calvin women are ranked 15th in the poll while the Calvin men are ranked 25th. Both teams are preparing for busy weekends as the the Knights travel to Alma on Friday for a 6 p.m. dual meet and then journey to Wheaton on Saturday for a 1 p.m. dual meet.
