Calvin Swimming and Diving Teams Off To Fast Starts at MIAA Championships

JENISON, Mich. – The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams had strong first day performances at the MIAA Championships at the Jenison Aquatic Center. The only finals event scheduled for Wednesday was the 800 freestyle relay and on the women’s side, Calvin cruised to a first place time of 7:41.97. The time is an NCAA “B cut qualifying time and was recorded by the Calvin quartet of senior Stephanie Fox (Kentwood/Home Schooled), freshman Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS), senior Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS) and sophomore Kathryn Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN/Mounds View HS). The finish gives Calvin a first place lead in the early team standings with 40 points.On the men’s side, Calvin’s 800 freestyle relay team of junior Andrew Mitchell (Iron Mountain/Kingsford HS), freshman Brandon Muma (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern HS), freshman Aaron Venema (Grand Haven/Grand Haven HS) and sophomore Alex Baumann (Holland/Holland Christian HS) took first place with a time of 6:53.10. Albion took first place with a time of 6:49.90. Calvin sits in second place in the men’s team standings with 34 points. Action continues on Thursday with morning prelims and evening finals.

MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships Schedule of Events
The MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships will take place this week at Jenison High School beginning Wednesday night and continuing on through Saturday evening with morning prelims set for Thursday, Friday and Saturday and championship finals set for the evening each night. On Wednesday, the finals of the 800 freestyle relay for men and women will take place along with the prelims for the men’s one-meter diving competition. The Calvin women have won the last eight MIAA titles and are currently ranked 20th in the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America Division III Top 20 poll.The Calvin men have finished in fourth place at the MIAA Championships the last six years. Calvin is seeking to finish in the top three for the first time since the 2006 MIAA Championships. Live Results
Calvin Swimming and Diving Teams Split Dual Meets at Albion

ALBION - Traveling to Albion to take on the Britons, the men’s and women’s swim and dive teams split the meet as the women took home a victory, 166-133, and the men took a narrow defeat, 141-134. The Calvin women complete their dual meet season with an overall record of 6-3 including a record of 6-0 against league foes. The Calvin men finish 4-4 overall in dual meet action and 3-2 against league opponents. Up next for both teams is the MIAA Championships which will be held at Jenison High School 13-16.

The Calvin men’s indoor track and field team is ranked 12th in the latest set of Division III Top 25 (indoor) rankings released by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association of America. Meanwhile, the Calvin men’s swimming and diving team is ranked 18th and the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team is ranked 20th in the latest Collegeswimming.com Division III Top 25 poll.It now means that five of Calvin’s six winter sports teams are nationally-ranked as its women’s basketball team is ranked second, its men’s indoor track and field team ranked 12th, its men’s basketball team ranked 17th, its men’s swimming and diving team ranked 18th and its women’s swimming and diving team ranked 20th.

Calvin Swimming and Diving Teams Claim Dual Meet Victories Over Hope

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams recorded dual meet victories over rival Hope Saturday afternoon in front of a standing room only crowd at Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center. In the women’s meet, Calvin defeated the Flying Dutch 164-136. On the men’s side, Calvin edged the Flying Dutchmen 146.5-to-133.5 The Calvin women are now 5-3 overall in dual meet competition including 5-0 against league opponents. The Calvin men are now 4-3 overall and 3-1 against league opponents. Both Calvin teams close out their dual meet campaigns on February 2 at Albion at 1 p.m.

Swimming and Diving Teams Compete Against Kalamazoo and Saint Mary’s in Dual Meets

NOTRE DAME, IN - The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team picked up a pair of dual meet victories on Friday night while the Calvin men’s swimming and diving team suffered its first dual meet loss against an MIAA foe. In competition hosted by Saint Mary’s College at the University of Notre Dame, the Calvin women defeated Kalamazoo 151-90 and Saint Mary’s 186-54 while the Calvin men were defeated by Kalamazoo 157-77.The Calvin women’s team is now 4-3 in dual meet competition this year including 4-0 against MIAA opponents while the Calvin men’s team is 3-3 overall including 2-1 against league opponents. Both Calvin teams are back in action on Saturday, hosting rival Hope at 1 p.m. at the Venema Aquatic Center with an alumni reception set to follow after the meet.

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will head into Christmas break holding national rankings. In the most recent set of Division III Top 25 polls conducted by Collegeswimming.com, the Calvin women’s team is ranked 16th while the Calvin men’s team is ranked 20th. Both teams are coming off of solid performances at the Calvin Winter Invitational last weekend. Both teams took fourth place in a field filled with Division II competition and several other Division III schools. Calvin will spend part of its post-exam Christmas break training for a week in Coral Springs, Florida.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Teams Take Fourth Place at Calvin Winter Invitational

The Calvin Winter Invitational concluded Saturday evening after its third day of competition. Another strong day in the pool for the Knights saw a number of top finishes as both teams took fourth in the final team standings. On the women’s side, sophomore Erika Waugh established a new school record in the women’s 200 backstroke with a second place and NCAA III B’ cut time of 2:05.59. Senior Samanthan Klaasen won the one-meter diving competition while freshman Michaela Rookus took home a win in the 200 IM. Senior Elizabeth Counsell also had a strong second place finish in the 200 breaststroke. On the men’s side, senior Mark Rushlow highlighted the day, placing second in the 100 butterfly. His morning prelim time of 49.91 was an NCAA B’ cut time.

In a long morning and early afternoon of prelims on Friday, Calvin saw nine individuals advance to the finals in 12 events. Despite a strong day in the pool, the women are in fourth place with 242 points while the men dropped from second to fourth with 263 points. Northern Michigan held its lead on the women’s side with 348 points while Grand Valley kept the top spot on the men’s side with 423 points. The Calvin women had two first place performances as senior Elizabeth Counsell won the 100 breaststroke and senior Samantha Klaasen won the three-meter board with a score of 438.65 points.
