Andy Krafft Captures Three-Meter Diving Title at MIAA Championships

JENISON - Calvin freshman Andy Krafft completed an historic two days of competition at the MIAA Championships Friday night at the Jenison Aquatic Center, capturing the MIAA title on the three-meter diving board with an NCAA III qualifying score of 504.05 points. A native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Krafft is the second individual in Calvin men’s swimming and diving history to capture both the one and three meter diving board titles at the same meet. He is also the first Calvin men’s diver to win the three-meter title since Dirk Pruis did so in 1982. Krafft actually established a Calvin record in the prelims, recording a score of 513.15 points, breaking the previous record of 508.45 set by Pruis in 1982 which had been the oldest record still in the Calvin books. On Thursday night, Krafft captured the one-meter title with a Calvin record point total of 511.45 points. Krafft now owns all four Calvin diving records, establishing new marks this year on the one and three-meter boards for six dives and now also in 11-dive competition. Krafft’s efforts helped the Knights remain in fourth place in the team standings with one day left to go. The Knights currently have a total of 365 points, trailing Olivet by 72 points.

JENISON - The Calvin men’s swimming and diving team is in fourth place through day one of the MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships with 160 points, just two points behind Olivet. Kalamazoo leads the competition with 257 points while Hope is second with 241. Highlighting the evening for the Knights was freshman Andy Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN/Home Schooled) who became the first MIAA men’s diving champion from Calvin since 1985, winning the one-meter competition with an NCAA III qualifying, Calvin record and Jenison Aquatic Center record score of 511.45. Kraft breaks the previous Calvin record for 11 dives on the one-meter board of 510.00 set by Jake Chapman in 1999.

Split Squads Lead Calvin Swimming and Diving Teams at Albion and Olivet - Krafft Shatters Records

Due to scheduling complications, the Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams participated in two MIAA dual meets on the same day and in the process, had to split up their squads to compete. The Calvin women managed to pick up two wins, defeating Albion 169-124 and Olivet 150-85. On the men’s side, Calvin fell to Albion 150-112 and to Olivet 154-131. In the men’s competition at Olivet, Calvin freshman Andrew Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN/Home Schooled) had a record-breaking day as he shattered his own school record on the one meter diving board with a first place score (six dives) of 332.20 points, breaking his previous record of 311.10. On the three-meter board, Krafft broke the second-oldest record still in the Calvin men’s books with a score of 321.25. The score (six dives) eclipsed the previous record of 298.50 set by Bill VanEe in 1985. Both record-breaking scores were also NCAA III qualifying scores.
Women’s Swimming & Diving Team Defeats Kalamazoo/Men’s Team Defeated by Hornets

The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team defeated MIAA foe Kalamazoo 155-140 at the Venema Aquatic Center in dual meet action while the Calvin men’s team was defeated by Kalamazoo 191-106. The Kalamazoo women entered Saturday’s meet ranked 17th nationally but the Calvin women’s team used depth in its lineup and decisive 1-2-3 sweeps in both the one and three-meter diving competitions to gain the win. The Calvin women’s team is now 4-3 overall including 4-0 against MIAA teams. On the men’s side, the Knights were defeated by sixth-ranked Kalamazoo. The Calvin men are now 2-4 in dual competition this year including 1-3 against MIAA opponents.

U. of Chicago Invitational Final Meet Results
CHICAGO, IL - The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams wrapped up competition at the University of Chicago Invitational late Saturday night. The Calvin women finished the two-day meet in second place with 942 points while the Calvin men took third with 624.5 points. Host Chicago won the women’s meet with 1,251 points and the men’s meet with 1,036.5 points.Highlighting the evening for the Calvin men on Saturday was freshman Andrew Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN/Home Schooled) who won the three-meter diving competition with an NCAA III qualifying score of 497.10. In the women’s meet, Calvin received victories from sophomore Stephanie Fox (Kentwood/Home Schooled) in the 200 freestyle (1:59.17), sophomore Elizabeth Counsel (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS) in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.08) and 200 breaststroke (2:28.94) and senior Monica Bressler (Sandusky, OH/Perkins HS) in the 100 backstroke (1:02.25) with Bressler also taking third in the 100 freestyle (55.79).

CHICAGO, IL - After one day of competition, the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team is in second place at the University of Chicago Invitational with 311 points while the Calvin men’s team is in fourth place with 187 points. Host Chicago leads the women’s standings with 403 points and the men’s standings with 300.5 points. Earlier in the week, the Calvin Sports Information office caught up with head Calvin men’s and women’s swimming coach Dan Gelderloos to talk about the University of Chicago Invitational as well as the remainder of the season. Calvin Swim Teams Compete In Unscored Relay Meet Against Alfred Over Christmas Break

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will swing back into action next Friday and Saturday at the University of Chicago Classic. Calvin spent a week after Christmas training in Coral Springs, Florida. While in Florida, Calvin competed against Alfred University in an unscored relay meet. On the women’s side, Calvin took first place in all eight events. On the men’s side, Calvin took first place in five of eight events.

The second annual Calvin Winter Invitational concluded on Saturday with the Calvin women’s team finishing second with 549 points while the Calvin men’s team took fifth with 296 points. Grand Valley State won both competitions with its third-ranked men’s team finishing with 1,331 points while its top-ranked women’s team garnered 1,223 points. Kalamazoo took second in the men’s standings with 597 points and was third behind Calvin in the women’s competition with 464.5 points.

With one day of competition left at the Calvin Winter Invitational, the Calvin women’s team is in second place while the Calvin men’s teams is in fifth place. Grand Valley State leads both competitions with the Lakers leading the men’s standings with 686 points and the men’s standings with 662 points. Kalamazoo is in second place in the men’s competition with 308 points while the Hornets are third in the women’s standings with 210 points. Calvin had a number of standout performances. On the women’s side, sophomore Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS) had the top swim for the Knights with a third place and NCAA III conditional qualifying time of 1:06.17.On the men’s side, Calvin was led by junior Ross Battoclette (Cincinnati, OH/Clark Montesorri HS) with a fifth place time of 1:44.29 in the 200 freestyle, junior Greg Gorham (Minneapolis, MN) sixth in the 100 breaststroke (59.37) and freshman Andrew Kraft (Fort Wayne, IN/Home Schooled) third on the one-meter diving board (404.30).

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened up competition at their own Calvin Winter Invitational Thursday night. Thursday’s competition featured just two events - the 1,650 freestyle and the 800 freestyle relay. After day one, Calvin is in third place in the women’s standings with 61 points while the Knights are fourth in the men’s standings with 48 points
