The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams spent Christmas break training in the Florida Keys. Photographer Stephen Frink was there to document Calvin’s divers in training. Dan Gelderloos Looks Back/Looks Ahead on 2011-2012 Swimming & Diving Season

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are near the midpoint of the 2011-12 season. Both teams were 2-2 in dual meet action during the first semester and recently posted strong performances at the Calvin Winter Invitational. Both teams will head to Florida over Christmas break for a week of training and competition at the Orange Bowl Classic. Elizabeth Counsell/Andrew Krafft Receive MIAA Swimmer/Diver of the Week Honors

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Elizabeth Counsell and Andrew Krafft its Swimmer/Diver of the Week for meets through December 3. Counsell, a junior from Indianapolis, Ind. (Heritage Christian HS), won the 100-yard breaststroke at the Calvin Invitational over the weekend with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:03.62. She also finished second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:21.58, with also was a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA meet. She also swam a :29.06 split on the breaststroke leg of the 200 medley relay and led off Calvin’s 800 freestyle relay team with an opening leg of 1:57.55.
Krafft, a sophomore from Fort Wayne, Ind. (Homeschooled), won both diving events at the Calvin Invitational. He won the 1-meter diving competition with an NCAA provisional score of 515.65 points. A day later, he was again victorious, winning the men’s 3-meter competition with another NCAA provisional score of 540.90 points. Krafft was the only double event winner from the MIAA at the Calvin invite, which featured four MIAA schools.
