Swimming and Diving Teams Fall to GVSU in Dual Meet Action

With a swim meet tomorrow at Olivet, the Calvin swim and dive team hopes to look strong on back-to-back days as they swam Friday night against Division II Grand Valley State. The Lakers won both the men’s and women’s competitions, defeating the Calvin men 163-77 and the Calvin women 157-83.Calvin returns to the pool tomorrow when it travels to Olivet to take on the Comets with the meet starting at 1 p.m.
Men’s Swimming Has Big Night at MIAA Relays

GRAND RAPIDS – The Calvin men’s swimming and diving team opened up its season Friday afternoon participating in the MIAA relays at Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center. The event was not scored, but Calvin finished second or better in 11 of the 12 events including eight first place finishes. The first relay was the 200-yard medley. Calvin won the event with a time of 1:37.89, finishing 0.22 seconds ahead of Kalamazoo. Aaron Mitchell, Stephen Kraft, Peter Johnson and Mark Rushlow earned the first place finish for Calvin. The next relay won by the maroon and gold was the 200-year breaststroke. The team of Johnson Cochran, Kraft, Andrew Vanderlei and David Doud swam a time of 1:15.82. Once again, the Knights barely edged out the Hornets, this time beating them by 0.11 seconds. Two events later, Calvin won the 200-yard butterfly relay. Peter Johnson, Doud, Mitchell and Rushlow swam a time of 1:36:89. For the third straight time, the Knights defeated Kalamazoo by a mere 0.12 seconds. Calvin’s next victory came in the 100-yard backstroke relay. Brandon Muma, Rushlow, Mitchell Schroder and Andrew Mitchell swam a time of 45.15 seconds.
Calvin won the very next event, the 100-yard breaststroke relay. Cochran, Kraft, Vanderlei and Travis Vincent swam a time of 50.04 seconds. Kalamazoo again finished second with a time of 50.15 seconds.
The 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle relays also ended with Knights victories. Both men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will return to action Friday, when it hosts Grand Valley at Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center.

2012-13 Calvin Men's Swimming and Diving Schedule
The Calvin men’s swimming and diving team looks forward to the upcoming 2012-13 season with great anticipation. Under the direction of head coach Dan Gelderloos, the Knights welcome back 15 returning letterwinners from last year’s team that posted a school record total of 635 points at the MIAA Champoinships. Included in the list of returning athletes are a pair of All-MIAA selections in senior Mark Rushlow and sophomore Travis Vincent. In addition, Calvin brings in one of its largest recruiting classes in recent memory as the list of newcomers includes 11 freshmen and one junior.

Dan Gelderloos Triathlon Story

With light rain tumbling down and his three sons running by his side, Calvin College swim coach Dan Gelderloos realized a longtime dream last weekend, completing the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile Michigan Titanium Triathlon in a time just over 12 hours.The triathlon was held at official “Ironman” distance and allowed the 40-year old Gelderloos to achieve a goal he had set his eyes on long ago. Calvin Lands 123 Scholar-Athletes on MIAA Academic Honor Roll

2011-12 MIAA Academic Honor Roll
The 2011-12 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic - Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 123 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list. The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2010-11 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom.

Diving Regional Site Alignment
The NCAA has passed a new qualification system for divers seeking to qualify for the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships next March and Calvin will be a part of that new process.Beginning this year, men’s and women’s divers seeking to qualify for the NCAA III Championships will compete at one of four regional qualifying sites March 1 and 2. Calvin has been selected as one of the four host sites with competition slated to be held at the Venema Aquatic Center.
Women’s Swimming and Diving Honored for Academics - Individuals Honored as Well

The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team has been named to the College Swim Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America honor roll list for the spring semester. In order to receive the award, a team must post a 3.10 grade point average or above. The Calvin women’s team also was named to the CSCAA Scholar All-America honor roll list for the fall semester as well. In addition, Calvin had three individuals from its swim program receive individual CSCAA All-America honors as junior Sam Klaasen and freshman Erika Waugh of the women’s team and sophomore Andy Krafft of the men’s team were so honored. In order to receive the award, individuals needed to have posted at least an NCAA III conditional qualifying score and post a 3.50 grade point average.

Final Directors Cup Division III Standings for 2011-12
For the 17th consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top 25 finish in the final NCAA III Learfield Sports Directors Cup standings, finishing 24th in the nation in Division III in 2011-12 with a total of 483.50 points. Calvin is one of only six schools in the country to finish in the top 25 every year that the competition has been held at the NCAA III level. Joining Calvin in that elite group are Williams, Mass., Amherst, Mass., Middlebury, Vt., the State University of New York at Cortland and Emory, Ga. Combined, nine of Calvin’s 19 sports teams scored Directors Cup points during the 2011-12 academic year.

Last month the Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed at the MIAA Championships in Holland. The Calvin women’s team recorded 803.5 points to capture its eighth consecutive MIAA title. Meanwhile the Calvin men’s team recorded a school-record 635 points and captured four individual league titles. Calvin student videographer Mike Zaagman has produced a highlight video of the final three days of competition at the league meet.
