Rushlow and Counsell Compete - Do Not Advance Out of Prelims at NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Mark Rushlow and Elizabeth Counsell both competed for Calvin at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday. Neither individual was able to qualify for the evening finals however. Rushlow (Goshen, IN) competed in the (men’s) 100 butterfly but was unable to advance out of the morning prelims, finishing 19th with a time of 50.07. Counsell (Indianapolis, IN) competed in the (women’s) 200 freestyle prelims and finished 42nd (1:57.74). Action will continue on Friday with Rushlow scheduled to compete in the 100 backstroke where he is seeded 36th (52.06) and Counsell in the 100 breaststroke where she is seeded third (1:03.62). Sophomore Andrew Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN) will also compete in the men’s one-meter diving preliminaries Saturday afternoon.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Calvin College sophomore Andy Krafft came within 1.1 points of claiming a national title on the three-meter board Wednesday night at NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships. A native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Krafft was competing at the at IU Natatorium, a facility he has competed in several times at the club level while growing up in Indiana. Krafft finished second on the three-meter board with a score of 541.55 points, just behind Phil DeVine of Wisconsin-Oshkosh who claimed his second three-meter national title in the last three years with a score of 542.65 points. It marks the third All-America performance of Krafft’s collegiate career. A year ago, Krafft placed third on the three-meter board and second on the one-meter board.Krafft will compete on the one-meter board on Friday. His second place finish Wednesday night gave Calvin 17 points in the team standings which has Calvin in a tie for 18th place. Scheduled to compete for the Calvin men on Thursday is junior Mark Rushlow (Goshen, IN) in the 100 butterfly prelims where he is seeded eighth. On the women’s side, junior Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN) will compete in the 200 freestyle prelims where she is seeded 41st.

Two Calvin swimmers and one diver have received invitations to the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships scheduled to be held March 21-24 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Representing the Calvin men’s team will be junior Mark Rushlow and sophomore diver Andrew Kraft. Representing the Calvin women’s team will be junior Elizabeth Counsell. Both swimmers will be traveling to their home state as Rushlow is from Goshen, Indiana (Northridge HS) while Counsell is from Indianapolis (Heritage Christian HS). Kraft is from Fort Wayne, Indiana. He will be making his second straight appearance at the national meet.
