Elizabeth Counsell/Andrew Krafft Receive MIAA Swimmer/Diver of the Week Honors

ROYAL OAK, Mich. Ė The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvinís Elizabeth Counsell and Andrew Krafft its Swimmer/Diver of the Week for meets through December 3. Counsell, a junior from Indianapolis, Ind. (Heritage Christian HS), won the 100-yard breaststroke at the Calvin Invitational over the weekend with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:03.62.  She also finished second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:21.58, with also was a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA meet.  She also swam a :29.06 split on the breaststroke leg of the 200 medley relay and led off Calvinís 800 freestyle relay team with an opening leg of 1:57.55. Krafft, a sophomore from Fort Wayne, Ind. (Homeschooled), won both diving events at the Calvin Invitational. He won the 1-meter diving competition with an NCAA provisional score of 515.65 points. A day later, he was again victorious, winning the menís 3-meter competition with another NCAA provisional score of 540.90 points.  Krafft was the only double event winner from the MIAA at the Calvin invite, which featured four MIAA schools.

Calvin Men Place Fourth - Women Place Fifth in Final Standings at Calvin Winter Invitational

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams concluded competition at the three-day Calvin Winter Invitational Saturday night. On the men’s side, Calvin finished fourth in a field of eight teams with 428 points. On the women’s side, Calvin took fifth in a field of 10 teams with 392 points. The point total by the Calvin men marked its highest total in the three-year history of the Calvin Winter Invitational.
Calvin’s divers played a big role in Calvin’s high point totals at the invitational. On the men’s side, sophomore Andrew Krafft won both the one and three-meter boards, winning three-meter board with a score of 518.25 points and the one-meter board with a score of 509.20 points. In the prelims of the three-meter competition on Saturday, Krafft broke the Venema Aquatic Center pool record with a score of 540.90 points which also ranks as an NCAA III qualifying score.On the women’s side, junior Samantha Klaasen took fourth on both the one and three-meter boards, posting a score of 382.85 points on the three-meter board and an NCAA III qualifying score of 403.50 on the one-meter board.

Records Fall and NCAA III Cuts Galore on Day Two of Calvin Winter Swimming & Diving Invite

With one day of competition left at the Calvin Winter Invitational, the Calvin men’s swimming and diving team is in fourth place with 216 points while the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team is in fifth place with 210 points. Grand Valley State leads both competitions with the Laker men leading with 651.5 points while the Laker women have a first place total of 546 points. In the men’s meet, Calvin got the morning off to a bang as senior Greg Gorham blasted away his own record in the 100 breaststroke prelims, recording an NCAA III B’ cut qualifying time of 57.73. In the evening finals, Gorham took seventh with a time of 58.40. On the women’s side, junior Elizabeth Counsell had a monster swim in the 100 breaststroke, winning the event with a strong NCAA III B’ cut qualifying time of of 1:03.62 that was less than two-tenths of a second of an NCAA III A’ cut time.  Junior Stephanie Fox also had a huge night, placing second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:54.07. Her swim came one night after she clocked an NCAA B’ cut qualifying time of 1:53.42 as the leadoff leg of Calvin’s 800 freestyle relay.

Calvin Women 2nd/Calvin Men 5th Through Day One of Calvin Winter Invitational

The first day of competition of the 2011 Calvin Winter Invitational is in the books and after day one, the Calvin women’s team is in second place in a field of eight teams with 71 points while the Calvin men’s team is fifth in a field of eight teams with 51 points. Just two events were held on Thursday night - the 800 freestyle relay and the 1,650 freestyle.

Men’s Swimming and Diving Team Edges Hope 148-146 in Dual Meet Action

HOLLAND - Calvin picked up an exciting dual meet victory over Hope on Saturday afternoon, grabbing a two-point lead with two events remaining and then holding on down the stretch. The Knights are now 2-2 in dual meet action this year. Key to the Calvin win was the performance of its 200 IM swimmers in the second-to-the-last event of the day as the Knights went 1-2-5 to garner 14 points. Junior Stephen Kraft led the 200 IM charge with a first place time of 2:03.06 while freshman Travis Vincent was second (2:03.49) and sophomore Peter Johnson fifth (2:06.73). Calvin then needed to just finish second in the 400 freestyle relay to clinch the win and the Calvin quartet of freshman Alex Baumann, sophomore Andrew Mitchell, junior Mark Rushlow and senior Ross Battoclette did just that, placing second with a time of 3:16.70, finishing less than a half-second out of first place.

The Calvin men and women’s swim and dive team played host to Wayne State Friday night.In the men’s competition, Wayne State topped Calvin 158-79The women would be outdueled as well, however, as the Warriors took the meet 144-92.

Swimming & Diving Teams Post Dual Meet Victories Over Wheaton

Returning to action after a week of practice, the Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams hosted Wheaton Saturday afternoon. The men would take the meet by an overall score of 169-129, winning their second straight meet against the Thunder. Heading into the final event a point ahead of Wheaton, the Calvin women had to win the final event to take the meet, the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The Knights A relay team of Alex Dhaenes, Rachel Colasurdo, Margaret Rechel, and Stephanie Fox would take the final event in a time of 3:41.88, claiming the meet for Calvin. The women won the meet by an overall score of 147-137.  Both teams are now 1-1 in dual meet competition and return to action next Friday when they host Wayne State University in non-conference dual meets.

Men’s Swimming & Diving Competes Against Grand Valley State at Venema Aquatic Center

A week after opening up its season at the MIAA Relays, the Calvin men’s swim and dive team hosted Grand Valley State for their it’s first dual meet of the season. The Knights were able to get off to a quick start as they were able to take first and third place in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, the first event of the night. Unfortunately for the Knights, it was not until the diving that they would capture another top spot. Sophomore Andrew Krafft dove like he was in mid-season form, though, setting two pool records as well as making two NCAA cuts. In the 1 meter diving, Krafft finished with a final score of 328.85, more than 70 points ahead of second place. The 3 meter dive seemed to be almost a replica performance as Krafft racked up 329.35 points, more than 85 points ahead of second place.

Swimming and Diving Teams Open Seasons at MIAA Relays

HOLLAND Ė The Calvin menís and womenís swimming and diving teams opened up their seasons on Saturday at the MIAA Relays held at the Holland Aquatic Center. The competition was unscored and featured several relays that are not otherwise used in collegiate competition. In the menís competition, Calvin posted a win in the 200 butterfly relay with the quartet of sophomore Peter Johnson, sophomore Andrew Mitchell, freshman Brandon Vagt and junior Mark Rushlow recording a tie of 1:36.63. Calvinís 3x500 freestyle relay team of junior Mathias Bares, freshman Travis Vincent and freshman Alex Bauwmann won with a time of 15:25.07.  On the womenís side, Calvin took first place in the 200 butterfly relay with the team of senior Rachel Bos, junior Shelby Cloyd, junior Rachel Colasurdo and sophomore Maria Sedjo clocking in with a time of 1:52.89. Calvinís 3x500 freestyle relay team of freshman Kathryn Wrobel, junior Stephanie Fox and junior Shelby Cloyd also won with a time of 16:16.09 while its 4x100 IM relay team of Colasurdo, junior Elizabeth Counsell, junior Savannah VanWormer and Fox took first in a time of 4:19.33. Both Calvin teams will host Grand Valley State in non-conference dual meets this coming Friday night at Calvinís Venema Aquatic Center.

Calvin Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Teams Ready for 2011-12 Season

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will open their seasons on October 22 when both teams compete at the MIAA Relays at the Holland Aquatic Center. On the men’s side, Calvin returns 16 letterwinners including 2011 MIAA Most Valuable Diver Andrew Krafft. A sophomore, Krafft is coming off a record-breaking 2011 season that saw him earn national runner-up honors on the one-meter board at the NCAA III Championships and a third place finish on the three-meter board. On the women’s side, Calvin returns 15 letterwinners led by junior Elizabeth Counsell who was named the 2011 MIAA Most Valuable Swimmer and junior Sam Klaasen who was named the 2011 MIAA Most Valuable Diver. Both individuals were All-MIAA selections with Counsell later earning NCAA III All-America honors in the 200 breaststroke.
