The first-ever Calvin C Club Awards ceremony was held on Wednesday night inside Van Noord Arena. The following is a list of the award recipients:

Calvin College Wins MIAA Commissioner’s Cup!!!

For the first time since the 1999-2000 academic year, Calvin College has won the outright MIAA Commissioner’s Cup. Calvin finished the year with 216 points, finishing ahead of rival Hope which earned 205 points. At the conclusion of the 2007-08 year, Calvin and Hope shared the Commissioner’s Cup as the two schools tied for first place. Hope had since won the last four outright titles. The MIAA Commissioner’s Cup award is based on the cumulative performance of each member school in the league’s 20 sports for men and women. The final Commissioner’s Cup standings is determined on the basis of each college’s standings in eight of 10 sports for men and eight of 10 sports for women. The Commissioner’s Cup (All-Sports Award) has been presented since 1934-35. Hope has won the award 34 times, followed by Kalamazoo 15, Albion 14, Calvin 9 and Alma 5. In addition, Calvin took first place in the MIAA Men’s All-Sports standings with 102 points, finishing ahead of Hope which tallied 93. Calvin also took first place in the MIAA Women’s All-Sports standings with 114 points, edging Hope by two points. The 2012-13 academic year was an historic one for the Calvin athletics program as it captured an MIAA record 12 conference titles including 10 that were outright league crowns. Calvin competes in 19 of the 20 MIAA-sponsored sports. The Knights do not compete in football.

Learfield Director's Cup Standings Through Winter Season
The winter sports season was recently completed for NCAA Division III athletics and the latest set of Learfield Director’s Cup standings for Division III have been announced. Calvin is ranked ninth in the latest set of standings with 508 points. The Knights garnered 199.5 points during the recent winter sports season. The Learfield Director’sCup is based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events and is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country. The Learfield Director’s Cup race is held at the NCAA I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions. Scoring points for Calvin during the winter season were the Calvin women’s basketball team (25 points), men’s basketball (64 points), women’s indoor track and field (47.5 points) and women’s swimming and diving team (63 points). During the fall sports season, Calvin produced 308.5 points as its men’s and women’s soccer teams, volleyball team and men’s and women’s cross country team all scored points. Calvin has now had nine of its 21 varsity sports teams score points in the Director’s Cup chase. The competition will conclude at the end of the spring sports season with a final set of standings set to be released in June.

In Calvin athletics, what was the best play of the year? Who were the male and female newcomers of the year? What was the most exceptional performance in an individual event? Come to the arena on May 8 to find out. On Wednesday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in the Van Noord Arena, the Calvin C Club welcomes student-athletes, coaches and fans of the Knights to an evening of celebrating Calvin athletics. There will be desserts and refreshments, trophy displays, a “Year in Review” video and the presentation of 13 awards, culminating in the Tiemersma and Beré Awards for female and male athlete of the year. Registration for current Calvin student-athletes is available through their coaches, and registration for all others is available online now! Cost is just $10 for guests (reduced to $5 for current students and C Club members). Business attire is desired.

Calvin Holds MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings Lead

Calvin College holds the lead in the latest set of MIAA Commissioner’s Cup standings as well as in the standings for the MIAA Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Awards. Calvin has a first place total of 147 points in the MIAA Commissioner’s Cup standings with Hope second with 126 points. In the men’s individual (all-sports) standings, Calvin has 68 points with Hope second with 56 points. In the women’s individual (all-sports) standings, Calvin has 79 points with Hope second with 70 points. This year, Calvin has captured nine MIAA regular season championships, winning league titles in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s basketball and women’s swimming and diving.
Calvin Set to Host NCAA III Central Diving Regional Friday and Saturday at Venema Aquatic Center

Calvin College is preparing to host the first-ever NCAA Division III Central Diving Regional. The two-day event will include divers from around the central region states and will be held inside Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center. Action will begin on Friday at 5 p.m. (EST) and will continue on Saturday at noon. Men’s and women’s divers will be seeking to qualify for the upcoming NCAA III Championships on both the one and three-meter diving boards. Admission to spectators will be free for the weekend. A complete list of competitors and schedule of diving sessions is expected to be announced Wednesday afternoon when the list of declared divers is released. The winners of each (one and three-meter) diving competition will gain automatic berths to the NCAA III Championships. A further number of at-large berths will also be available. The number of berths available at Calvin’s regional should be announced no later than Thursday. Five Knights earned All-MIAA honors at last weekend’s MIAA Championships. Calvin earned its highest finish in over twenty years by placing second behind repeat champion Kalamazoo.Senior Mark Rushlow, junior Andrew Mitchell, sophomore Travis Vincent, and freshmen Caleb Meindertsma and Johnson Cochran were each named to the All-MIAA team. Rushlow was named to the All-MIAA team for the third time, Vincent for the second time and Meindertsma, Cochran and Mitchell for the first time. With a second place finish and a point total of 666 points, the Knights topped their previous point record of 635 set in their fourth place finish last year.

The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team captured its ninth consecutive MIAA title on Saturday, finishing 38 points ahead of runner-up Hope at the MIAA Championships which concluded Saturday night at the Jenison Aquatics Center. Senior Elizabeth Counsell won the 200 breaststroke for the third straight year while senior Samantha Klaasen won the one-meter diving competition for a third straight year. Klaasen was later named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Diver for the third straight year. On the men’s side, Calvin posted its highest team finish in more than 20 years, finishing with a school record point total of over 660 points. Freshman Caleb Meindertsma took home the gold medal in the 1,650 freestyle with a school record time of 16:06.12 that is also good for an NCAA B’ cut time and shattered his own school record by more than 10 seconds.

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams had strong performances at the MIAA Championships Friday night at the Jenison Aquatic Center. The Calvin women boosted their overall lead over Hope to 42 points heading into the final day of competition. Senior Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS) came up with the lone individual win for Calvin as she claimed the 100 breaststroke title for the third straight year, this time doing so out of lane one with a strong NCAA III B’ cut qualifying time of 1:04.37. Freshman teammate Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) was close behind in a second place and NCAA III B’ cut qualifying time of 1:05.05. It marks the eighth consecutive year a Calvin swimmer has won the event.Calvin’s 200 medley relay team highlighted the evening for Calvin by winning in an MIAA and school record time of 1:45.84, breaking the previous MIAA mark set by Calvin in 2009. The time is also an NCAA B’ cut qualifying time. Calvin has now won the event six out of the last seven years. On the men’s side, Calvin sits in second place with 466 points. The Knights picked up a victory on Friday from senior Mark Rushlow (Goshen, IN) in the 100 butterfly as he repeated as league champion in the event. Freshman Jordan Cochran (Mount Vernon, OH) took third in the 100 breaststroke with a school record time of 56.83, missing first place by just four-hundreths of a second.

JENISON, MI – The second day of the 2013 MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships concluded Thursday evening at Jenison High School. The Calvin women hold a slim lead over Hope, 283.5-272. On the men’s side, Kalamazoo is the leader with 299 points. The Knights currently sit in second place with 219 points. The Calvin men’s 400 medley relay team took first place on Thursday with a school record time of 3:22.77. On the women’s side, Calvin crowned champions in the 200 IM (Michaela Rookus), 500 freestyle (Kathryn Wrobel) and one-meter diving (Samantha Klaasen). The Calvin women’s 400 medley relay team also took first place with an NCAA B’ cut qualifying time of 3:54.61
