Matt DeVlieger Named Recipient of Arthur Ashe Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship

Calvin College junior Matt DeVlieger has received one of the highest honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. DeVlieger has been named the 2010 recipient of the ITA Division III Arthur Ashe Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship. The award which dates back to 1982, goes to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JuCo men’s and women’s players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.

T-Shirts for Matt DeVlieger Continue To Be On Sale - Video Stories Recap MIAA Tournament Experience

This past weekend at the MIAA Mens Tennis Tournament, all seven menís tennis teams competing at the tournament donned royal blue t-shirts designed by Hope menís tennis coach Steve Gorno that honored Calvin junior menís tennis player Matt DeVlieger (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS). DeVlieger is currently continuing his rehabilitation from a December 2009 scuba diving accident that left him paralyzed from the waste down. The T-shirts were designed by Gorno as a fundraiser with all proceeds going to the medical expenses that the DeVlieger family is incurring as Matt recovers. Calvin Media Relations Manager Matt Kucinski was there to document the opening of the MIAA Tournament and caught the opening speech given to the competing players by Gorno.

Men’s Tennis Takes Third at MIAA Tournament With Dramatic Come-From-Behind 5-4 Win Over Albion

KALAMAZOO Ė Calvinís menís tennis team took to the courts one final time this season.  After a 5-3 defeat at the hands of rival Hope Friday afternoon, the Knights found themselves in the third place match versus the Albion Britons; a team Calvin had defeated 6-3 at Strikwerda Tennis Center earlier this season.  On Saturday, the Knights prevailed, defeating the Britons 5-4 in dramatic fashion to claim third place in the MIAA Tournament.

Men’s Tennis Splits Matches at MIAA Tournament - To Face Albion in Third Place Match Saturday

KALAMAZOO—The Calvin men’s tennis team split a pair of matches on Friday at the MIAA Tournament hosted by Kalamazoo, defeating Alma 5-0 in the first round and then falling to Hope 5-3 in the semifinals. The Knights (14-9) will face Albion in the third place match on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Kalamazoo’s Stowe Stadium. If the case of rain, the match will be moved indoors to Kalamazoo’s Markin Tennis Center.Prior to the start of the tournament, all seven men’s tennis teams competing at the tournament donned royal blue t-shirts designed by Hope men’s tennis coach Steve Gorno that honored Calvin junior men’s tennis player Matt DeVlieger (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS). Men’s Tennis Defeats Albion to Finish Third in MIAA - Gains Third Seed for MIAA Tournament

Grand Rapids ĖCalvinís menís tennis team took on the Albion Britons on Tuesday afternoon in search of a 3rd place finish in the MIAA.  The Knights defeated the Britons 6-3 to clinch the third seed in this weekendís MIAA tournament and an opening round matchup with the Alma Scots.

Men’s Tennis Defeated by Kalamazoo 9-0

The nationally-ranked Kalamazoo men’s tennis team handed Calvin a 9-0 defeat at Kalamazoo’s Markin Center Saturday afternoon. Ranked 19th nationally, Kalamazoo took all three doubles points and then swept the six singles flights in straight sets.

Calvin drops to 12-8 overall and 3-2 in MIAA competition with the loss. Calvin closes out its MIAA dual match campaign next Tuesday when it hosts Albion at 4 p.m.

Men’s Tennis Defeats Trine 8-1 at Strikwerda Tennis Courts

Calvin bumped its overall record to 12-7 and its conference mark to 3-1 with an 8-1 conference victory over the visiting Thunder of Trine University Wednesday at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.

Calvin grabbed an immediate 3-0 lead in doubles play, winning all three flights by scores of 8-4. Roland Eldridge and Preston Phillips picked up a win at No. 1 doubles after trailing 2-1 early on. Andrew Rescorla and Brian DeMaagd then teamed up for the win at No. 2 doubles while sophomore Jon Goorhouse and junior Andrew DeVlieger came up with the win at No. 3 doubles.

Men’s Tennis Blanks Adrian 9-0 in Conference Match

ADRIAN - Calvin got back on the winning track with a 9-0 conference victory at Adrian on Tuesday. The Knights are currently 11-7 overall and 2-1 in MIAA play. Picking up singles victories for Calvin on Tuesday were Roland Eldridge, Preston Phillips, Brian DeMaagd, Andrew Rescorla, Philip Reinken and Jon Goorhouse.

Phillips and Reinken are now both 10-5 in singles play this year.

Men’s Tennis Defeated by Hope 6-3 at Strikwerda Tennis Courts

The Calvin Knights menís tennis team took on rival Hope on the campus of Calvin College Saturday.  Hope was victorious defeating the Knights 6-3.

The doubles matches proved to be the tightest of the whole day.  First doubles was the first match to get off the courts.  Gardner and Cawood for the Dutch defeated Phillips and Eldridge of Calvin 8-0.  Calvinís head coach John Ross opted to diversify his doubles lineups putting his third and second singles players at first doubles.  Hope head coach Steve Gorno went a different way playing his best two singles players at one doubles.

ALMA - Calvin improved to 10-6 overall and to 1-0 in the MIAA with an 8-1 win at Alma on Tuesday. Calvin grabbed an early 3-0 leads with victories from sophomore Brian DeMaagd (Calvin Christian HS) and senior Andrew Rescorla (Zionsville, IN) at No. 1 doubles, freshman Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH) and sophomore Jon Goorhouse (Holland Christian HS) at No. 2 doubles and freshmen Philip Reinken (Morton, IL) and Jarod Brower (Holland Christian HS) at No. 3 doubles.
