Men’s Tennis Defeated by Kalamazoo 9-0

The nationally-ranked Kalamazoo men’s tennis team handed Calvin a 9-0 defeat at Kalamazoo’s Markin Center Saturday afternoon. Ranked 19th nationally, Kalamazoo took all three doubles points and then swept the six singles flights in straight sets.
Calvin drops to 12-8 overall and 3-2 in MIAA competition with the loss. Calvin closes out its MIAA dual match campaign next Tuesday when it hosts Albion at 4 p.m.
Men’s Tennis Defeats Trine 8-1 at Strikwerda Tennis Courts

Calvin bumped its overall record to 12-7 and its conference mark to 3-1 with an 8-1 conference victory over the visiting Thunder of Trine University Wednesday at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.
Calvin grabbed an immediate 3-0 lead in doubles play, winning all three flights by scores of 8-4. Roland Eldridge and Preston Phillips picked up a win at No. 1 doubles after trailing 2-1 early on. Andrew Rescorla and Brian DeMaagd then teamed up for the win at No. 2 doubles while sophomore Jon Goorhouse and junior Andrew DeVlieger came up with the win at No. 3 doubles.
Men’s Tennis Blanks Adrian 9-0 in Conference Match

ADRIAN - Calvin got back on the winning track with a 9-0 conference victory at Adrian on Tuesday. The Knights are currently 11-7 overall and 2-1 in MIAA play. Picking up singles victories for Calvin on Tuesday were Roland Eldridge, Preston Phillips, Brian DeMaagd, Andrew Rescorla, Philip Reinken and Jon Goorhouse.
Phillips and Reinken are now both 10-5 in singles play this year.

The Calvin Knights men’s tennis team took on rival Hope on the campus of Calvin College Saturday. Hope was victorious defeating the Knights 6-3.
The doubles matches proved to be the tightest of the whole day. First doubles was the first match to get off the courts. Gardner and Cawood for the Dutch defeated Phillips and Eldridge of Calvin 8-0. Calvin’s head coach John Ross opted to diversify his doubles lineups putting his third and second singles players at first doubles. Hope head coach Steve Gorno went a different way playing his best two singles players at one doubles.

ALMA - Calvin improved to 10-6 overall and to 1-0 in the MIAA with an 8-1 win at Alma on Tuesday. Calvin grabbed an early 3-0 leads with victories from sophomore Brian DeMaagd (Calvin Christian HS) and senior Andrew Rescorla (Zionsville, IN) at No. 1 doubles, freshman Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH) and sophomore Jon Goorhouse (Holland Christian HS) at No. 2 doubles and freshmen Philip Reinken (Morton, IL) and Jarod Brower (Holland Christian HS) at No. 3 doubles.
Men’s Tennis Closes out GLCA Tournament With 7-2 Win Over Wooster

GRANVILLE, OH—Calvin closed out play at the GLCA Tournament Saturday morning with a 7-2 victory over the College of Wooster to run its season record to 9-6. Calvin recorded a 2-1 record at the GLCA Tourney, defeating Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster while falling to eventual tournament champion Carnegie Mellon.
Men’s Tennis Splits Matches on Day One of GLCA Tournament

The Calvin men’s tennis team split a pair of matches Friday afternoon at the GLCA Tournament hosted by Kenyon College. The Knights opened the two-day tournament with a 5-0 victory over Ohio Wesleyan. The Knights then dropped a 5-0 decision to nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon Friday afternoon. Calvin is now 8-6 on the year and is scheduled to return to action Saturday morning on the second day of the tournament.

Much of the Calvin community knows of the horrible scuba diving accident that happened to junior Matt DeVlieger last year, an accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. As a tennis player, Matt’s teammates certainly hold a special place for him in their hearts as he continues down the road of recovery. So with this in mind and with the 2010 season still just in its initial stages of competition, they have a lot to play for in terms of this season’s emotional significance.

Men’s Tennis Team Splits Saturday Matches in Crawfordsville

CRAWFORDSVILLE, IN - The Calvin men’s tennis team split a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday at Wabash College, falling 5-1 to regionally-ranked Denison Unviersity then defeating host Wabash 5-2.
Calvin is now 7-5 on the season.
Men’s Tennis Defeats Earlham University 8-1

RICHMOND, IN – Calvin improved to 6-4 on the year with an 8-1 non-conference victory at Earlham College Friday afternoon. Calvin’s only defeat came at No. 1 singles with the Knights winning in straight sets in the remaining five singles flights. Calvin also lost just three games combined in the three doubles flights.
Calvin is back in action tomorrow when it takes on regionally-ranked Denison and follows with a match against Wabash. Both matches will be played in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
