Men’s Tennis Downs Davenport 6-3 at MVP Sportsplex

KENTWOOD - The Calvin men’s tennis team picked up a hard-fought 6-3 non-conference win over Davenport University Wednesday afternoon at the MVP Sportsplex. The Knights are now 8-5 on the year. Calvin took two of the three doubles points and then split the six singles points to gain the victory. Calvin will now prepare to compete at the GLCA Tournament at Albion College Friday and Saturday. Calvin will open the tournament against eighth-seeded Ohio Wesleyan at 9 a.m.
Men’s Tennis Defeats Alma in MIAA Dual Match

The Calvin’s men’s tennis team welcomed the Alma Scots to Grand Rapids on Tuesday afternoon for their MIAA conference tennis match. The Knights defeated Alma by a score of 8-1 to improve to 2-0 in the MIAA. Because of weather, the match could not be played outside at Strikwerda Tennis Center. Instead, the match was played inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. The Knights will host Davenport on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and then take on Ohio Wesleyan at 9:00 a.m. on Friday in a first round match of the GLCA Tournament hosted by Albion College.
Men’s Tennis Splits Saturday Matches in Crawfordsville, Indiana

CRAWFORDSVILLE, IN - The Calvin men’s tennis team split a pair of Saturday matches at Wabash College, defeating Wittenberg University 6-0 and falling to host Wabash 5-4. The Knights are now 6-5 this year against four-year institutions. In the loss to Wabash, Calvin overcame a 2-1 deficit through doubles action to tie the match 4-4 with three singles wins. Wabash clinched the match however with a win at No. 4 singles. Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Alma at 4 p.m.

DAYTON, OH - The Calvin men’s tennis team improved to 5-4 overall with a 7-2 non-conference win over Earlham College Friday afternoon.Calvin swept the three doubles points and then took four of the six singles points to gain the win.Calvin will participate in a pair of non-conferences matches on Saturday as the Knights will take on Wittenberg University and Wabash College with both matches taking place in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
Men’s Tennis Team Opens MIAA Campaign With Victory at Albion

ALBION - The Calvin men’s tennis team opened its 2011 MIAA campaign with an 8-1 victory at Albion Wednesday afternoon at Albion’s Ungrodt Tennis Center. The Knights are now 4-4 overall on the season. Calvin jumped out to a quick lead by sweeping the three doubles flights with Roland Eldridge and Preston Phillips winning at No. 1 doubles, Brian DeMaagd and Loukas Peterson winning at No. 2 doubles and Andrew DeVlieger and Philip Reinken winning at No. 3 doubles. In singles play, DeVlieger won at No. 2 singles, DeMaagd won at No. 3 singles, Phillips won at No. 4 singles, Peterson won at No. 5 singles and Jarrod Brower won at No. 6 singles. Calvin will now prepare for a trio of non-conference matches this weekend as it will travel to Hiram on Friday and then face Wittenberg and Wabash on Saturday with both Saturday matches taking place at Wabash College.

ORLANDO, FL - Calvin dropped a 9-0 decision to regionally-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater Thursday afternoon. The loss came on the heels of a 6-3 Calvin win over Colorado College Tuesday afternoon. The Knights are now 3-3 on the year against four-year schools.In the win over Colorado College Tuesday, Calvin swept the three doubles points and then received singles victories from senior Andrew DeVlieger at No. 2 singles, sophomore Brian DeMaagd at No. 3 singles and sophomore Jarrod Brower at No. 6 singles. Calvin is back in action on Friday, facing regionally-ranked Grinnell College at noon.

The Calvin men’s tennis team is 3-2 overall and 1-1 thus far on its spring trip to Orlando, Florida. On Monday, Calvin suffered a hard-fought 5-4 decision to Hamline University but rebounded to defeat North Central College 9-0 Tuesday afternoon.
Men’s Tennis Defeats Grand Rapids Community College and Grace Bible College Friday night

The Calvin men’s tennis team picked up a pair of dual match victories on Friday inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center, defeating Grand Rapids Community College 9-0 and Grace Bible College 9-0. Grace Bible College is coached by former Calvin men’s tennis player Jon Miedema. The win over Grand Rapids Community College will not count on Calvin’s final won-loss record however as it came against a two-year institution. The Knights are now 1-1 on the year and return to action on Monday when they compete against Hamline University (MN) at 9:30 a.m. in a match scheduled to be played in Orlando, Florida.

GRANDVILLE - The Calvin men’s tennis team opened its 2011 dual match season with a 9-0 loss against Grand Valley State University late Thursday evening in a match played indoors at the Ramblewood Tennis Courts. Calvin is back in action today, hosting Grand Rapids Community College at 3 p.m. at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center followed by a 6 p.m. home match at the same facility against Grace Bible College.

2011 Calvin Men's Tennis Schedule
The Calvin men’s tennis team returns seven letterwinners from a team that finished 15-9 a year ago and in third place in the final MIAA regular season standings. Returning letterwinners include seniors Andrew DeVlieger and Roland Eldridge, junior Vashan Wright and sophomores Jarrod Brower, Brian DeMaagd, Preston Phillips and Philip Reinken. DeMaagd, Reinken and Phillips all recorded 13 wins in singles play in 2010. Calvin opens non-conference dual match play on March 17 when it travels to Grand Valley State University. Conference play begins on March 30 when the Knights journey to Albion.
