Calvin/Hope Men’s Tennis Match Suspended by Rain - Will Resume On Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

The Calvin/Hope men’s tennis match was suspended on Wednesday because of rain. The match was suspended after doubles play with Hope holding a 2-1 lead and singles play just underway. The match will resume at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday (April 26) at Calvin’s Strikwerda Tennis Courts.
Men’s Tennis Finishes Up Competition in Calvin Flighted Tournament

The Calvin men’s tennis team concluded play in its own Calvin Flighted Singles Invitational Saturday afternoon at Calvin’s Strikwerda Tennis Center and the Zandee Tennis Center at the Gainey Athletic Complex. Calvin junior Phil Reinken won the “B” singles flight despite struggling in the semi final match. He defeated Hope’s Kyle Kreps 6-7(4), 7-6(2), 10-7. The final match was much more straightforward. Rienken downed David Murray of Trine 7-5, 6-1. Vashan Wright won the “C” singles flight for Calvin defeating Alma’s Ben Schippers 6-3, 6-1 before beating Cody Herbuck of Hope 7-5, 6-3 in the final. Calvin freshmen John Strikwerda made a name for himself by winning the “D” singles flight. In the semifinal match, Strikwerda defeated Alma’s Phil Ryskamp 6-2, 6-0 and then Matt Culver of Hope in the final 6-4, 6-3. In the “A” doubles flight, four Calvin Knights played in the consolation final. Phillips and Reinken defeated DeMaagd and Peterson 8-5.In the “B” singles flight, Vashan Wright and Jarrod Brower edged out Bussies and Culver of Hope 9-8(4) to win the flight.Calvin will return to action when it plays host to rival Hope College Wednesday at Strikwerda Tennis Center.

HOLLAND, MI - The Calvin Flighted Invitational ended its first day of competition Friday. The first day of competition was held at Hope College due to weather. Each Calvin flight was in action for at least one match. Calvin had two players competing in each flight of singles. Starting off with ‘’A” singles flight, junior Preston Phillips defeated Josh Grove of Alma 6-4, 7-5 as well as Brian DeMaagd defeating Dan Desper of Trine 2-6, 6-3, 10-6. At “B” singles, junior Phil Reinkin defeated Joey Clark of Trine 6-3, 6-3 and Jarrod Brower was defeated by Gabe Gasher 3-6, 6-3, 10-5. Nick Ihrie defeated Tom Griffin of Calvin 6-3, 6-4 at “C” singles as well as Vashan Wright of Calvin defeating Joe Panzer of Hope 6-4, 6-4. John Strikwerda defeated Dan Owens of Hope 6-4, 4-6, 10-6. Stephen Healy lost to Matt Culver 7-5, 6-2. Both Knight teams in “A” flight doubles went 1-1 on the day. This will force a matchup of the two Calvin teams tomorrow morning. In the “B” flight of doubles, Calvin has one team team playing for the championship. Brower and Wright will face Bussies/Culver.
