Men’s Tennis Falls at Kalamazoo College 7-2

KALAMAZOO - Calvin jumped out to a 2-1 lead but could not gain another point in a 7-2 loss at nationally-ranked Kalamazoo College. For the second straight year against Kalamazoo, Calvin (5-6 overall, 2-1 MIAA) grabbed two of the three doubles points but the 27th-ranked Hornets (7-9 overall, 4-0 MIAA) came roaring back to sweep all six singles flights.Calvin’s two points came at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Juniors Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley HS) and Philip Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton HS) pulled out a gutty 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles while junior Brian DeMaagd (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) and sophomore Loukas Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) were 8-6 winners at No. 2 doubles. Calvin returns to action this Friday and Saturday at the GLCA Tournament at Oberlin College. Calvin will open the tournament on Friday with dual matches against DePauw and Ohio Wesleyan.
Brian DeMaagd Named MIAA Men’s Tennis Player of the Week

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Brian DeMaagd its Player of the Week in women’s tennis for matches played through April 8. DeMaagd, a junior from Grandville (Calvin Christian HS), posted 2-1 records at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles for the week. He won both of his MIAA doubles matches against Albion and Trine, and overcame a 6-1 first-set loss to post a three-set singles victory against Albion. Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Kalamazoo for a 6 p.m. match.

Coming off of an 8-1 win against the Trine Thunder earlier in the week, the Calvin College men’s tennis team played host to the Britons of Albion College Saturday afternoon at Strikwerda Tennis Center. The result proved to be the same, as Calvin knocked off the Britons 8-1 to improve to 5-5 (2-0 MIAA) on the year. Calvin swept the all three doubles flights. Juniors Preston Phillips and Phil Reinkin defeated David Richter and Tucker Blake 8-3. Brian DeMaagd and Loukas Peterson nipped Danny Frank and Bill Sessions 9-7. Jarrod Brower and Vashan Wright defeated Brandon Kosinski and Steven Nawrocki 8-2.
