Men’s tennis sweeps Oberlin 5-0

HOLLAND, MI - The Calvin men’s tennis team finished the MIAA/NCAC Challenge with a 5-0 win over Oberlin on Sat., Apr. 13. Calvin finishes the challenge with a 2-1 record having defeated Ohio Wesleyan and falling to Wabash yesterday. The Knights won all three doubles flights. Seniors Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley HS) and Phil Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton HS) handled Ben turchin (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) and Charlie Marks (Chagrin Falls, OH/Hawken) 8-1 at first doubles. Senior Brian DeMaagd (Grandville/Calvin Christian) and junior Loukus Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) defeated Soren Zeliger (Bronx, NY/Horace Mann) and Callan Louis (Cambridge, MA/The Rivers School) 8-5 at second doubles. Senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland Christian) and junior John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian) won their third doubles flight, defeating Brandon McKenna (Kamuela, HI/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) and Eliot Heaton (Geneva, NY/Geneva HS) 8-3. The Knights needed just two singles flights to clinch the match. Calvin won the first two matches off the court. Peterson defeated Zeliger 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles. Calvin sophomore Tom Griffin (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian) defeated McKenna 6-3, 6-2 at sixth singles. Calvin returns to MIAA play Apr. 17, when it hosts the Adrian Bulldogs for a 4:00 p.m. match at Strikwerda Tennis Center.

HOLLAND, MI - After falling to Wabash 5-2 in the morning, the Calvin men’s tennis team returned to its winning ways with a 5-0 win against Ohio Wesleyan. Calvin concludes day of of the MIAA/NCAC Challenge with a 1-1 record. Calvin won all three doubles matches while surrendering no more than four games in each flight. Seniors Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley HS) and Phil Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton HS) defeated John Rissell (Whitefish Bay, WI/University School) and Richie Karban (Elyria, OH/Elyria HS) 8-4 at first doubles. Senior Brian DeMaagd (Grandville/Calvin Christian) and junior Loukus Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) defeated John Russell (Maumee. OH/Maumee HS) and Will Thieman (Colombus, OH/Upper Arlington) 8-2 at second doubles. Senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland Christian) and John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian) picked up an 8-3 victory at third doubles. Calvin needed only two singles wins to clinch the match. DeMaagd handled Rissell 6-0, 6-1 at first singles. Peterson defeated Connor Breen (Essix Falls, NJ/Kimberly Academy) 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles. Calvin improves to 11-2 on the season. The Knights return to action tomorrow morning when they face Oberlin at 10:00 a.m.

HOLLAND, MI - The Calvin men’s tennis team faced the Little Giants of Wabash College in its first match of the MIAA/NCAC Challenge hosted by Hope and Calvin. Wabash ended Calvin’s eight-game winning streak, defeating the Knights 5-2. Calvin fell behind early, winning just one of the two doubles flights. Senior Brian DeMaagd (Grandville/Calvin Christian) and junior Loukus Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood) defeated Mark Troiano (Indianapolis, IN/Cathedral) and Nate Koelper (Fort Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran) 8-5 at second doubles. The Wabash first doubles team of Wade Miller (Crawfordsville, IN/North Montgomery) and Daniel Delgado (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) edged Calvin seniors Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley) and Phil Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton) 9-7. Former high school teammates senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland Christian) and junior John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian) fell to Ian Leonard (Bloomington, IN/Bloomington North) and Drew Sawyer (Kokomo, IN/Kokomo) 8-6 at third doubles. Calvin’s lone singles win came at the sixth singles flight. Sophomore Tom Griffin (Elmhurst, IL/Elmhurst) defeated Sawyer 7-5, 6-1. Phillips took Delgado to three sets, but fell by scores of 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(1). Calvin squares off against the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan later this afternoon.

ITA Division III Central Region Rankings
For the first time this year, the Calvin men’s tennis team has cracked the ITA Division III Central Region rankings. The Knights are ranked 17th in the Central Region rankings released earlier today. Under the direction of head coach John Ross, the Knights are currently 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA. Calvin will face a trio of North Coast Athletic Conference opponents this weekend in Holland as the Knights will meet Wabash and Ohio Wesleyan Friday and Oberlin on Saturday. All three matches will be played at Hope College.
Calvin C Club to Hold First-Ever Calvin Athletics Awards Night May 8

In Calvin athletics, what was the best play of the year? Who were the male and female newcomers of the year? What was the most exceptional performance in an individual event? Come to the arena on May 8 to find out. On Wednesday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in the Van Noord Arena, the Calvin C Club welcomes student-athletes, coaches and fans of the Knights to an evening of celebrating Calvin athletics. There will be desserts and refreshments, trophy displays, a “Year in Review” video and the presentation of 13 awards, culminating in the Tiemersma and Beré Awards for female and male athlete of the year. Registration for current Calvin student-athletes is available through their coaches, and registration for all others is available online now! Cost is just $10 for guests (reduced to $5 for current students and C Club members). Business attire is desired.

ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin men’s tennis team won its sixth consecutive match Tues. afternoon defeated the Trine Thunder 6-3 in an MIAA dual meet. Calvin is now 9-2 on the season and 3-0 in MIAA play. Calvin won all three doubles flights, but two of the three were tight. Calvin seniors Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley HS) and Phil Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton HS) defeated Caleb Knust (Plainfield, IN/Plainfield HS) and Dan Desper (Kendallville, IN/East Noble) 8-5 at first doubles. Senior Brian DeMaagd (Grandville/Calvin Christian) and junior Loukus Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood) defeated the Trine second doubles fight of Joe Dunbar (Carmel, IN/Blessed Theodore Guerin) and Zach Richardson (Muncie, IN/Delta) 8-3. The Calvin third doubles team of senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland Christian) and junior John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian) outlasted Nick Ihrie (Kendallville, IN/East Noble) and David Murray (Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook HS) 8-6. The two MIAA foes split the six singles flights with Calvin winning at second, fourth and fifth singles. Phillips knocked off Dunbar 6-0, 6-3 at second singles. Peterson defeated Murray 6-0, 6-2 at fourth singles. At fifth singles, Brower defeated Joe Clark (Sturgis/Sturgis HS) 6-2, 7-5. Reinken won the first set at third singles, but was unable to close out the match and fell to Desper 5-7, 6-1, 6-4. With Kalamazoo defeating Hope 8-1, Calvin now holds a one game lead in the conference. The Knights return to action Fri., Apr. 12, when they participate in the first day of the MIAA/NCAC (North Coast Athletic Conference) Challenge.
Brian DeMaagd Named MIAA Men’s Tennis Player of the Week

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association named Calvin’s Brian DeMaagd its Player of the Week in men’s tennis for matches played through April 7. DeMaagd, a senior from Grandville (Calvin Christian HS), won both his matches at No. 1 singles and at No. 2 doubles in leading the Knights to a pair of MIAA victories. He sparked the Knights to their first victory ever over traditional MIAA power Kalamazoo with a 6-3, 6-3 singles win and an 8-4 doubles win. He also posted a 6-4, 6-1 singles win and an 8-5 doubles win against Alma. DeMaagd is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Coming off of the program’s first win over Kalamazoo College earlier this week, the Knights continued their winning ways defeating the Scots of Alma College 9-0 on a windy day at the Strikwerda tennis center. Senior Brian DeMaagd (Grandville/Calvin Christian) surrendered five games in the match at first singles, defeating junior Josh Grove 6-4, 6-1. Seniors Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley HS) and Phil Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton) followed suit, winning at second and third singles. Junior Loukus Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) defeated Alma freshman Jared Guy 6-3, 6-4 at fourth singles. Senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland Christian) dispatched junior Gordon Rumschlag 6-1, 6-2 at fifth singles. Sophomore Tom Griffin (Elmhurst, IL/Elmhurst) defeated Chad Barnhart 6-1, 6-0 at sixth singles. The Knights won all three doubles flights - giving up one game first doubles, five games at second doubles and three games at third doubles. Calvin, now 8-2 on the season and 2-0 in the MIAA, returns to action Apr. 9 when it travels to Angola, IN, to face the Trine Thunder. The match is slated to start at 4:00 p.m.
Men’s Tennis Makes History With 6-3 MIAA Dual Match Victory Over Kalamazoo

GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin College men’s tennis team produced a piece of history on Wednesday afternoon inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center, defeating Kalamazoo College 6-3 in an MIAA dual match. The victory is the first in Calvin men’s tennis history over the Hornets who have won at least a share of every MIAA championship since 1936. Calvin’s victory over Kalamazoo ends K’s 55-meet win streak against MIAA foes, dating back to ‘03. In addition, it is just the third loss in 460 MIAA dual meets for the Hornets dating back to 1936. Calvin took two of the three doubles points and four of the six singles points. Senior Jarrod Brower recorded the clinching point at No. 5 singles. Calvin (7-2 overall, 1-0 MIAA) has now won four straight matches beginning with a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Spring Arbor University on March 28 after Calvin trailed 4-0 in the match.

OSHKOSH, WI – The Calvin men’s tennis team improved to 2-0 on the weekend and 6-2 overall with a 9-0 win over Lakeland College. At first doubles, seniors Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley HS) and Phil Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton HS) defeated sophomore Paul Elzinga (Howards Grove, WI/Howards Grove HS) and freshmen William Yelverton (Oconomowac, WI/Oconomowac HS) 8-1. Senior Brian DeMaagd (Grandville/Calvin Christian) and junior Loukus Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) defeated freshmen Greg Bokventiz (St. Francis, WI/St. Francis HS) and sophomore Jake Halverson (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) 8-1 at second doubles. Former Holland Christian teammates senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland Christian) and sophomore John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian) defeated senior Brandon Robinson (Burlington, WI/Westosha Central) and sophomore Chris Meyer (Neenah, WI/Neenah HS) 8-0 at third doubles. Calvin needed just three singles flights to win the match. The Knights did that and more, winning all six singles flights. The top three singles flights, won by DeMaagd, Phillips and Reinken respectively, all won the first set 6-0. Each of the three seniors gave up a single game in the second set - winning each by a score of 6-1. Peterson defeated Yelverton 6-1, 6-0 at fourth singles. Brower and sophomore Tom Griffin (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian) won at fifth and sixth singles respectively without losing a game. Calvin will start the MIAA portion of its schedule Apr. 3, when it faces Kalamazoo. The Knights are looking for their first victory against the Hornets in program history.
