Aaron Meckes & Nick Kramer Are All-Americans at NCAA III Indoor Track & Field Championships

GRINNELL, IA - In his first trip to the NCAA III Track and Field Championships, Aaron Meckes walked away an All-American. On Saturday afternoon, the junior thrower out of Bay City took eighth in the shot put with a career-best throw of 54-4 1/2 at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Grinnell College. Prior to this weekend, Meckes had never qualified for either for the NCAA III Championships at either the indoor or outdoor level. He is the third Meckes brother to claim All-America honors in track and field at Calvin College as older brothers Nate and Josh Meckes were All-Americans in outdoor track and field with Nate doing shot on multiple occasions in the shot put and dicus while Josh did so as a long jumper. Combined, the Meckes brothers have now produced seven All-America track and field certificates at Calvin College. In the men’s 5,000 meters, senior Nick Kramer was an All-American, placing eighth with a time of 14:26.84. Junior Matt VanderRoest was 11th with a time of 14:47.99. The All-America finish is the sixth of Kramer’s track and field career including his second indoors.As a team, Calvin finished 48th with a team score of two points.North Central captured the team title with 48 points with Wisconsin-Eau Claire second with 37 points.

Whittle Competes But Does Not Advance in Mile Run at NCAA III Indoor Track & Field Championships

GRINNELL, IA - Calvin College junior Greg Whittle competed in the preliminaries of the mile run on Friday at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships. Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) clocked a time of 4:17.80 but did not advance to Saturday’s finals, finishing 11th in the Friday prelims.Scheduled to compete for Calvin on Saturday are senior Nick Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) and junior Matt VanderRoest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) in the men’s 5,000 meters and junior Aaron Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) in the men’s shot put.

Track & Field Athletes Compete at North Central College Last-Chance Meet

NAPERVILLE, IL – A group of Calvin men’s and women’s track and field athletes competed at a last-chance meet hosted by North Central College Friday night, hoping to improve performances in order to qualify for the upcoming NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships.One Calvin athlete who certainly increased his stock on Friday night was junior Matt VanderRoest who took first place in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:35.12. The time puts VanderRoest into the top 10 on the NCAA III indoor qualifying list and puts him in contention for a qualifying berth to next week’s national meet. Senior Dan Kerr was also fifth (14:54.55) and sophomore Sam Kerk seventh (15:06.38).
