Calvin Track & Field Teams Receive Academic Honors from USTFCCCA

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams have again achieved academic and athletic excellence.

For the 10th straight year, the Calvin women’s track and field team has received the all-academic team award from the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Calvin men’s track and field team has also received the award for the second straight year.

NEW ORLEANS - The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has announced the menís 2010 Division III All-Academic Track & Field team. A total of 202 student-athletes representing 74 institutions compose the group. Calvinís Jed Christiansen, Aaron Goodman and Ben Van Wyk have all been selected to the honor list.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met either the NCAA Division III Indoor or Outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard in their respective event.

Calvin's MIAA Academic Honor Roll Recipients

The 2009-10 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 143 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list.

The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2009-10 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom. This year’s Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the distinction four consecutive years. Of the students, 19 are from Calvin.

Calvin Finishes 14th in Final Learfield Sports Director’s Cup Standings

Final NCAA III Learfield Director's Cup Standings 2009-10

For the 15th consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top 25 finish in the final NCAA III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, finishing 14th in the nation in Division III in 2009-10 with a total of 634 points.
Calvinís point total is its second-highest ever in the 15 years of the competition.

Calvin continues to be one of only seven schools in the country to finish in the top 25 every year that the competition has been held at the NCAA III level.

Joining Calvin in that elite group are Williams, Mass., Amherst, Mass., Middlebury, Vt., Wisconsin-LaCrosse, the State University of New York at Cortland and Emory, Ga.

Williams College, Mass., defended its title as the best athletics program in the nation in Division III by winning its 14th U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup with 1,292.25 points.

Rachel Boerner Is Double National Titlist At NCAA III Track and Field Championships

BEREA, OH—Calvin College junior Rachel Boerner became the first athlete in MIAA track and field history to capture two individual national titles on the same day, winning the 400 meter dash and the 400 meter hurdles Saturday afternoon at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College.

Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ/Hillcrest Lutheran Academy) cruised to victories in both events, winning the 400 meters in a time of 54.50 and the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 59.80. Boerner’s double national title effort helped the Calvin women’s track and field team finish fifth in the final team standings with 35 points, just one point out of fourth and two points out of third place.

Kramer and Smit Claim All-America Berths in Steeplechase at NCAA III Championships

BEREA, OH—The steeplechase tradition at Calvin College continues. 

On Friday night at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College, Calvin crowned an All-American in the men’s steeplechase and the women’s steeplechase as sophomore Nick Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) was fourth (9:04.28) in the men’s race and senior Elizabeth Smit (Kirkland, WA/Bellevue Christian HS) fifth (10:43.79) in the women’s race.Kramer is the ninth individual in Calvin men’s track and field history to earn All-America plaudits in the steeplechase while Smit joins Sarah Hastings (2005) as one of two steeplechase All-Americans in Calvin women’s track and field history.

Calvin Track & Field Athletes Gather at NCAA III Championships Banquet Wednesday Night

The members of the Calvin men’s and women’s track and field program competing at the NCAA III Championships this weekend at Baldwin-Wallace College gathered for a pre-race banquet Wednesday night. At the banquet, Calvin distance coach Al Hoekstra was presented with the Division III Great Lakes Regional Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year Award. Calvin sports information student assistant Mitch Blankespoor is with the team at the national meet and caught up with several members of the Calvin coaching staff for pre-nationals interviews:

Al Hoekstra Named Great Lakes Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year

For the first time in his career, Calvin College distance coach Al Hoekstra has been named the Great Lakes Region Assistant Coach of the Year inw omen’s track and field. A 26-year distance coach at Calvin, Hoekstra is being honored by the United States Track and Field Coaches Association.

This spring, Hoekstra has helped coach five distance athletes that are entered in the NCAA III Championships in the distance evnets, a championship high. His distance runners swept the top four positions at the MIAA Championships in the women’s steeplechase and the top three in the 10,000 meters.

Kelby McClelland Balances Full Plate at Calvin - Headed Back to NCAA III Track & Field Championships

The Calvin Sports Information office caught up on Monday afternoon with Calvin senior Kelby McClelland who is headed back to the NCAA III Track and Field Championships for the first time since the 2007 season. A native of Mercer, Pennsylvania, McClelland will compete in the 110 high hurdles this week at the national meet hosted by Baldwin-Wallace in Berea, Ohio. McClelland also competed at the national meet in the 110 high hurdles in 2007 but then elected to take two years off from school. This fall, he chose to return to Calvin to complete his degree and finish out his final year of track and field eligibility.

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams will send a combined 16 athletes to the upcoming NCAA III Track and Field Championships including 12 from its women’s team and four from its men’s team.

The following is a look at the 16 individuals that will represent the Calvin track and field program at the NCAA III Track and Field Championships this Thursday, Friday and Saturday (May 27-29) at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.
