Calvin Track and Field Teams Record Solid Weekend of Performances

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams had a solid Saturday of competition as a large group of Calvin athletes compete at the Ferris State Bulldog Invitational while a smaller distance group competed at the Miami University Red Hawk Invitational. Calvin will now prepare for the MIAA Jamboree scheduled for next Saturday at Adrian College.

Calvin Track & Field Teams Ranked in Top 25 of First USTFCCCA Outdoor Polls

The first set of Division III Top 25 rankings for outdoor track and field have been released by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association and both Calvin teams are ranked in the top 25. The Calvin women’s track and field is ranked ninth in the women’s poll while the Calvin men’s track and field team is ranked 21st. In addition, the Calvin women are ranked number-one in the women’s Great Lakes Regional poll while the Calvin men are ranked third in the men’s Great Lakes Regional poll.

Track and Field Teams Post Strong Performances at Grand Rapids Open Invite

Calvin’s outdoor track and field spring season continued to get underway here as the Knights came out strong in the Grand Rapids Open, with some quality performances, especially in the distance and field events. Battling the cold and wind at Houseman Field on the northeast side of Grand Rapids, the Knights got some valuable meet experience and a great opportunity to build towards future competitions. Highlighting the meet were NCAA III provisional qualifying performances by senior Sarah Reasoner in the women’s discus, junior Jodi Hoekstra in the women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase, junior Nick Kramer in the men’s 3,000 meter steeplechase and senior Rachel Boerner in the women’s 400 meter hurdles.

MEMPHIS, TN - A week ago, Calvin College senior Sarah Reasoner claimed national runner-up honors in the women’s shot put at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships. Reasoner will now get a chance to compete at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships after recording an NCAA III Automatic (outdoor) qualifying throw of 48-0 1/2 at the Rhodes College Open. She also posted an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 137-11 in the discus. Reasoner was part of a strong Calvin throwing crew on Saturday as senior Kim Wigboldy took second in the javelin (124-0) while senior Leigha Oberle was eighth in the hammer throw (130-2) and fifth in the discus (128-8). On the men’s side, sophomore Aaron Meckes was sixth in the discus (150-2) and fourth in the shot put (49-3).

The recent success of the Calvin men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships coupled with strong performances by Calvin at the NCAA III Cross Country Championships have boosted Calvin in the AlCarius/Deb Vercauteren Program of the Year Standings. On the women’s side, Calvin is currently tied for fourth with Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the Deb Vercauteren standings while on the men’s side, Calvin is in fifth place in the Al Carius standings.

COLUMBUS, OH - A fabulous foursome of track and field athletes packed a powerful punch for the Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams Saturday at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Capital University. Behind a national championship finish by senior Rachel Boerner in the 400 meters and a national runner-up performance by senior Sarah Reasoner in the shot put, the Calvin women’s team finished in eighth place with 18 points, marking Calvin’s second top 10 national finish in three years at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships. On the men’s side, Calvin used a national runner-up finish by sophomore Greg Whittle in the mile run and a fourth place finish by junior Nick Kramer in the 5,000 meters to finish tied for 12th place with 13 points.

COLUMBUS, OH - A pair of Calvin athletes advanced to the finals out of their respective prelim heats Friday night at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Capital University. Senior Rachel Boerner advanced to the finals of the women’s 400 meters while sophomore Greg Whittle advanced to the finals of the men’s mile run.The defending national champion in the 400 meters, Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ/Hillcrest Lutheran Academy) advanced to the finals with the fifth-fastest time (57.31) out the prelims. As a result, Boerner will run in the first of two heats of four on Saturday at approximately 5:35 p.m.
Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) had the eighth-fastest time in the men’s mile prelims Friday, clocking in at 4:17.11. The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams will be sending a combined four individuals to the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships this Friday and Saturday. The national meet will be hosted by Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. Representing the Calvin women’s team will be seniors Rachel Boerner and Sarah Reasoner. Representing the Calvin men’s team will be junior Nick Kramer and sophomore Greg Whittle.

NAPERVILLE, IL—Rachel Boerner punched her ticket to next week’s NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday night and Greg Whittle most likely did too. Boerner posted an NCAA III Indoor track and field automatic qualifying time at the North Central College Last-Chance Invitational Friday night while Whittle had a strong NCAA III provisional qualifying time. The NCAA III Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held next Friday and Saturday at Capital University in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio. Boerner won the 400 meters in an automatic qualifying time of 56.38. Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ/Hillcrest Lutheran Academy) is the defending national indoor and outdoor champion in the 400 meters. On the men’s side, Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) hopes to make his first trip to the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships after winning the mile run Friday night in a provisional qualifying time of 4:11.96.

ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams captured the MIAA Indoor Invitational titles on Saturday at Trine University. On the women’s side, Calvin took first place with 226.16 points with Hope second with 121.83 points. On the men’s side, Calvin posted a first place score of 188.5 points, just over 50 points ahead of second place Adrian (135.25). A big highlight for the women included an NCAA III automatic and season-best throw of 46-1 1/2 in the shot put by senior Sarah Reasoner that was good for first place. The throw places Reasoner in fourth place on the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field shot put performance list. On the men’s side, Calvin received a first place and NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 51-11 1/4 in the shot put and a 1-2-3 finish in the mile run with three Calvin runners landing NCAA III provisional qualifying times. The sweep included a first place performance by senior Alex Wrobel (4:14.69), a second place finish by sophomore Greg Whittle (4:15.54) and a third place finish by junior Nick Kramer (4:15.57).
