Jed Christiansen Named Recipient of Albert H. Deal Scholar-Athlete Award

ROYAL OAK - Awards by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the outstanding senior athletes from its member schools during the 2008-09 academic year have been announced by Commissioner David Neilson.

Jed Christiansen of Calvin College has received the Albert H. Deal Scholar-Athlete Award, while Nora Kuiper of Hope College has been presented the Sheila Wallace Kovalchik Scholar-Athlete Award.

The awards recognize senior class athletes who have excelled in academics and athletics, as well as displayed outstanding leadership qualities. The awards honor two former MIAA commissioners, Albert Deal (1971-91) and Sheila Wallace Kovalchik (1991-2002).

Calvin Track and Field/Cross Country Athletes Receive ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Honors

Four Calvin athletes have received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV honors in the track and field/cross country college division.

On the men’s side, Erik Van Kampen has been so honored while on the women’s side, the Knights have three honorees in seniors Julie Bratt and Sarah Wittingen and junior Jessica Koster. All four individuals now advance to the national ballot and are eligible for Academic All-America consideration.

Calvin Finishes Ninth in Al Carius Program of the Year Award Standings

GRAND RAPIDS—Calvin College has finished in ninth place in the inaugural Al Carius Program of the Year Award standings.

The Al Carius Program of the Year Award is awarded annually to the most outstanding NCAA Division III men’s cross country/track & field program.  The award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field seasons)  based on the institution’s finish at the NCAA Division III Championships.
