Calvin College Graduates Compete at U.S Olympic Marathon Trials

HOUSTON, TX - Three Calvin College graduates ran in the U.S. Olympic Marathon trials on Saturday. In the men’s race, Calvin graduates Paul Petersen and Jed Christiansen finished 55th and 61st respectively. A 2001 Calvin graduate, Petersen took 55th with a time of 2:20.31. A 2010 Calvin graduate, Christiansen finished 61st in a time of 2:21.09. In the women’s race, 2008 Calvin College graduate Christina Overbeck took 108th in a time of 2:48.25. Her race came just over a month after she had qualified for the trials with a time of 2:44.44 at a last-chance meet in Sacramento, California.

Coming around the fourth turn at Grand Valley State University’s Early Bird Open, he heard them, the cheers of his teammates.
Calvin! Calvin! Calvin!
These cheers weren’t new to Nick Kramer; he was actually quite familiar with them. For the past three years he’d heard them at conference jamborees and regional meets. He even heard them at last year’s nationals, where just enough Advil and an uncanny amount of focus allowed him to momentarily ignore the pangs of a torn hamstring to finish fourth in the 5000 meters at the 2011 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Calvin Fourth in Latest Set of Learfield Sports Director’s Cup Standings

The latest set of Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup fall sports standings have been released and after an outstanding fall sports campaign, Calvin College stands in fourth place with 262 points.Washington University (Mo.) leads the standings with 372 points with Middlebury (Vt.) second with 359 points and Amherst (Ma.) third with 264 points. Calvin picked up 90 points from its men’s soccer team that earned a national runner-up berth in the NCAA III Tournament last weekend. Calvin also received 64 points from its volleyball team that reached the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament and 57 points from its men’s cross country team that finished 11th at the NCAA III Championships and 51 points from its women’s cross country team that placed 13th at the NCAA III Championships.
