Calvin Men’s Golf Fifth at MIAA Jamboree #1

BATTLE CREEK - Calvin participated in the first MIAA jamboree of the year on Thursday and came away with a fifth place team score of 306 strokes. The jamboree took place at the Bedford Valley Country Club with Olivet serving as host. Olivet used home course advantage to its advantage with a sizzling team score of 289 strokes, finishing six strokes ahead of Trine University and 14 strokes ahead of third place Hope. Adrian was fourth at 305 with Calvin just a stroke behind in fifth. Calvin’s top individual golfer on Thursday was senior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a round of 75 that left him tied for 11th place.

BATTLE CREEK - Calvin used a strong day performance to finish in fifth place at the Olivet College Lou Collins Memorial Tournament. Calvin came up with a second day score of 303 after recording a score of 312 the day before. The weekend tournament was held at the Bedford Valley Country Club. Calvin’s two-day total of 615 strokes was one stroke better than sixth place Hope and none stroke behind fourth place Madonna. Host Olivet took first place with a two-day total of 605 strokes while Trine and Wheaton (IL) tied for second at 609.

BATTLE CREEK - After one day of competition at the Lou Collins Memorial Tournament hosted by Olivet College, Calvin is tied for seventh place with a team score of 312 strokes. Trine University holds the lead with a first day total of 302 strokes. Calvin is tied for seventh with Adrian.

2010 Calvin Men's Fall Golf Schedule
The 2010 Calvin men’s golf team returns six letterwinners from its 2009 squad that tied for second in the final MIAA standings.
Calvin’s senior cast includes Jess Hendriksma and Eric Doezema. Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was a second team All-MIAA selection in 2009, finishing 10th in the final MIAA individual standings with an average of 75.9 strokes per round. Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) is another savvy veteran who finished the 2009 MIAA season inside of Calvin’s regular lineup.

2010 Hartman Writing Award Winning Entry on Jon & Ben Kuiper
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the winner of the Hartman Writing Award.

Jeff Febus, sports information director at Calvin College, has been named the winner of the Hartman Writing Award. The award honors the memory of former Albion College Sports Information Director Robin Hartman who passed away in August of 2006. At the time of his death, Hartman was the prep sports editor for the Fort Wayne News Sentinel. Robin Hartman Memorial Tribute. The Hartman Award honors outstanding writing in a sports information capacity, either by a sports information director or assistant
This is the third year of the Hartman Writing Award. Each year, the winner has been selected by a member of the current Fort Wayne News Sentinel staff.

Calvin's MIAA Academic Honor Roll Recipients
The 2009-10 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 143 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list.
The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2009-10 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom. This year’s Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the distinction four consecutive years. Of the students, 19 are from Calvin.

History of Calvin's MIAA Team GPA Award Recipients
For the second consecutive year, 10 Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA Team GPA Award for the recently completed 2009-10 academic year – matching a Calvin record. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2009-10 academic year. A year ago, Calvin established a school record as 10 of its 17 varsity teams eligible for the honor achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average.

Men's Golf Ping All-Region Teams
Calvin College senior Jon Kuiper has been named to the Ping Division III Great Lakes All-Region men’s golf team announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Kuiper is one of 72 players spread across six different regions to be so honored. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Kuiper was a first team All-MIAA selection this past fall, finishing second in the final MIAA standings with an average of 74.0 strokes-per-round.

LOCKBOURNE, OH - Calvin College senior Jon Kuiper completed competition at the 36-hole Purple and White Invitational this weekend host by Capital University. Kuiper (Grand Rapids Christian HS) finished the tournament tied for 19th place with a two-day total of 161 strokes, firing a round of 78 and then carding a score of 83 on Saturday.

LOCKBOURNE, OH - Calvin College senior Jon Kuiper is in a tie for 14th place after day one of the Capital University Purple & White Invitational on Friday. A graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Kuiper carded a score of 78 on the first day of competition.
The 36-hole tournament will conclude with a final 18-hole round on Saturday. Capital University is hosting the tournament at the Foxfire Golf Club.
