Men’s Golf Finishes 26th at NCAA III Championships

GREENSBORO, NC - Calvin rebounded from a difficult day one with a sterling effort on day two at the NCAA III Championships Wednesday afternoon on the West Course of the Grandover Resort. After shooting a team score of 317 on Tuesday, Calvin improved by a 20-stroke margin on Wednesday, carding a team score of 297 led by senior Jess Hendriksma who fired an even-par round of 72. Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) finished with a two-day total of 149 strokes after shooting 77 on day one. Calvin’s two-day team score of 614 was good for 26th place, allowing the Knights to move up eight spots from their day one standing. Calvin will not advance into the final two rounds as only the top 15 teams make the cut for the final 36 holes of competition.

Jess Hendriksma Named to Ping Division III All-Region Team By Golf Coaches Association

Calvin College senior Jess Hendriksma has been named to the Division III Ping Great Lakes All-Region team by the Golf Coaches Association of America. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Hendriksma has played in the number-one spot throughout the 2010-11 season for the Calvin men’s golf team, helping lead the Knights to their first-ever MIAA title and first-ever berth in the NCAA III Tournament. Hendriksma is the second individual from Calvin to earn Ping All-Region honors over the last two years as former teammate Jon Kuiper was a Ping All-Region choice last spring. Like Hendriksma, Kuiper is also a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School.

Men’s Golf In 34th Place Through Day One of NCAA III Championships

GREENSBORO, NC - The Calvin men’s golf team is in 34th place through day one of competion at the NCAA III Championships at the Grandover Resort. Calvin posted a first day total of 317 strokes. Oglethorpe (GA) and St. John’s (MN) share the first day team lead at 286 strokes. The top 15 teams at the conclusion of round two will advance to the final two rounds of competition, scheduled for Thursday and Friday respectively. Calvin is one of 40 teams competing at the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin’s top finisher on Tuesday was senior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who fired a five-over par round of 77. Senior Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomores Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) had rounds of 80. Rounding out Calvin’s finishers was freshman Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian HS) with a round of 85.

Men’s Golf Prepares for Competition at NCAA III Tournament

GREENSBORO, NC - The Calvin men’s golf team will make it first-ever appearance in the NCAA III Tournament this week. Led by head coach Brian Bolt, the Knights will begin play on Tuesday morning at 7:50 a.m. Competing for the Calvin men’s golf team will be seniors Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), sophomores Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and freshman Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian HS). Competition will take place at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina. Guilford College will serve as host. Calvin will open play on Tuesday morning and will be joined by teams from Skidmore and Texas Lutheran. On Wednesday, Calvin will tee off with the same three teams beginning at 11:10 a.m.

Men’s Golf Ties Hope at Hope/Calvin Wooden Shoes Challenge

WEST OLIVE - The Calvin men’s golf team tied rival Hope in the Hope/Calvin Wooden Shoes Challenge Friday morning at the Wuskowhan Player’s Club. Both teams finished with 317 strokes. Calvin’s Jess Hendriksma and Hope’s Chris Ansel shared first place with rounds of 74. Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were sophomores Ben Kuiper and Dave Sarkipato with rounds of 80 while senior Eric Doezema and freshman Ross Ryzenga had rounds of 83. Calvin will now start preparing to compete at the NCAA III Championships May 10-13 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

PIERSON—Slogging through on-and-off again rain showers, trhe Calvin men’s golf team tied for second at its own Knight Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the Pilgrim’s Run Golf Course, posting a team score of 314 strokes. Davenport took first with 307 strokes while Calvin and Cornerstone tied for second. Calvin’s top individual finisher was senior Jess Hendriksma who took second with an even-par round of 73. Senior Eric Doezema was next at 79 with sophomore Ben Kuiper carding an 80, freshman Ross Ryzenga an 82 and sophomore Dave Sarkipato an 87.

Men’s Golf Captures Vic Cuiss Invitational Title

JACKSON - The Calvin men’s golf team captured the Vic Cuiss Invitational title Monday with a team score of 312 strokes at the Jackson Country Club. Calvin tied Spring Arbor for first place but won the tournament crown on a tiebreaker as Calvin’s fifth score was higher than Spring Arbor’s fifth score. The four scores from a lineup of five determine the final team score. Calvin’s fifth and tie-breaking score belong to freshman Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who had a round of 83. Calvin’s top individual on Monday was sophomore Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who carded a round of 76 while senior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had rounds of 78. Kuiper, Hendriksma and Ryzenga were all named to the all-tournament team. Calvin returns to action next Monday when it competes at the Furniture City Classic at the Quail Ridge Golf Club beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Men’s Golf Takes Second at Sunshine Invitational

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - Calvin concluded competition at the Sunshine Invitational at the Wannamaker Ryder Golf Course on Friday, finishing in second place, three strokes behind Williams College in the two-day, 36-hole event. Calvin held a five-stroke lead over Williams heading into Friday’s competition but the Ephs had a huge second day, firing a team score of 292 to nip the Knights by three in the final standings. Calvin had back-to-back solid rounds however, posting a 299 on Thursday and a 300 on Friday. The Knights were led by senior Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who placed fourth in the final team standings with a 148 (73-75) while sophomore Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) tied for fifth with a 149 (76-73). Senior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Chrsitian HS) also came on strong Friday, finishing in ninth place individually (78-76) with a 36-hole total of 154.

Men’s Golf Holds Day One Lead at Sunshine Invitational

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - Through the first day of competition, the Calvin men’s golf team is in first place at the Sunshine Invitational. The Knights carded a team score of 299 strokes on Thursday afternoon at the Wannamaker Ryder Golf Course with Williams second (304) and Trinity College (CT) third (313). The tournament format allows for six individuals to compete with the toup four individuals counting towards the team score. Calvin had five of its six golfers fire sub-80 rounds led by senior Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who had a round of 73 that was good for second place individually.
