Men’s Golf Takes Seventh at First MIAA Jamboree

MARSHALL - After a weekend of finishing on top, the Calvin men’s golf team slipped to the back of the pack Thursday afternoon at the first MIAA Jamboree of the year. Thursday’s outing was hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club and the Knights took seventh in the eight-team field with a team score of 335 strokes. Calvin had opened its season last weekend at the (non-conference) Olivet Comet Lou Collins Invitational, winning the tournament title for the first time in school history. Calvin was led individually by junior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with an 80 that was good for a sixth place tie individually. Freshman Michael Wierenga (Caledonia/South Christian HS) was next with an 84 while senior Jake DeBoer (Byron Center/South Christian HS) had an 85, junior Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) an 86 and freshman James VanNoord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) an 88.

Men’s Golf Captures Title of Lou Collins Memorial Tournament

BATTLE CREEK - The Calvin men’s golf team completed a big weekend at the Olivet College Lou Collins Memorial Invitational, winning the tournament with a two-day total of 597 strokes. Calvin has competed at the tournament for several years and it is believed that this is the first time the Knights have finished as tournament champions. Calvin opened the tournament with a team score of 300 on Friday and came back with a sizzling score of 297 on Saturday. The two-day total of 597 allowed the Knights to finish four strokes ahead of non-conference rival Wheaton.

Men’s Golf in Second Place Through Day One of Olivet College Lou Collins Invitational

BATTLE CREEK - The Calvin men’s golf team is in hot pursuit of first place at the Lou Collins Invitational hosted by Olivet College at the Bedford Valley Country Club. On day one of the two-day, 36-hole tournament, Calvin fired a second place team score of 300, just two strokes behind host Olivet which leads the 15-team field with a team score of 298. Junior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) led the way for the Knights with a round of 69, tying the Calvin record for lowest score in a round. Freshman Michael Wierenga (Caledonia/South Christian HS) also had a sparkling collegiate debut with a round of 75.
