MIAA Commissioner David Neilson to Retire at Conclusion of 2013-14 Academic Year

ALBION, Mich. – David L. Neilson, the commissioner of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association since 2002, has announced he will retire from the position at the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic year. The announcement of Commissioner Neilson’s retirement came Tuesday from Dr. Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran, president of Kalamazoo College and vice chairwoman of the MIAA Presidents’ Council.  He is the eighth and third-longest serving commissioner in the MIAA’s 126-year history. Commissioner Neilson and his wife, Karen, live in Royal Oak. They have four children and five grandchildren. The MIAA is the nation’s oldest collegiate athletic conference, founded in 1888. The MIAA consists of nine private colleges from Michigan and northern Indiana. Member institutions are Adrian College, Albion College, Alma College, Calvin College, Hope College, Kalamazoo College, Olivet College, Saint Mary’s College and Trine University.

Men’s Golf Takes Second at Final MIAA Jamboree - Finishes Second in Final League Standings

The Calvin men’s golf team took second at the eighth and final MIAA Jamboree of the year on Monday afternoon, posting a team score of 314 at its home course the Watermark Country Club. With its second place performance, Calvin finishes second in the final MIAA regular season standings, 21 strokes behind MIAA champion Hope. In finishing second, Calvin clinches a spot in the MIAA Spring Tournament for the third consecutive year and will host one of the three 18-hole rounds that make up the MIAA Spring Tournament. The MIAA Spring Tournament includes the top four teams from the MIAA fall regular season with the winner of the spring tournament receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament. Hope will host the final two 18-hole rounds of the spring tournament with Trine and Adrian also participating in the four-team field. Junior James Van Noord led Calvin on Monday with a 77.

Men’s Golf Fourth at MIAA Jamboree #7 - Slips Back Into Second in Overall Standings

WEST OLIVE - Calvin’s hopes for a repeat MIAA championship took a significant hit on Thursday afternoon at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Hope College at the Wuskowhan Player’s Club. Calvin entered the day with a six stroke lead for first place in the overall MIAA standings. At the end of the day however, the Knights trailed rival Hope by 20 strokes heading into the eighth and final MIAA Jamboree, scheduled for next Monday at the Watermark Country Club in Grand Rapids. Hope used a dominating performance on Thursday to vault into a commanding lead for first place in the overall standings, recording a team score of 290 with Trine second at 305, Alma third at 314 and Calvin fourth at 316. Calvin was led by senior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapdis/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who had a 75 while sophomore Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 78.  Senior James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) had an 80, senior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) and 83 and freshman Brad Smith (Brunswick, ME/Brunswick HS) an 86

Men’s Golf Takes Over First Place in MIAA Overall Standings With MIAA Jamboree Effort

With two MIAA Jamborees left to play, the Calvin men’s golf team is in sole possession of first place in the overall MIAA standings. The Knights moved six strokes ahead of Hope in the overall standings by tying for first place at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Trine University on Saturday. Calvin tied hosted Trine for first place with a team score of 288 with Hope six strokes back in third at 294. Calvin and Hope entered the day tied for the lead in the MIAA overall standings. Calvin had three players finish in the top four individually on Saturday led by freshman Brad Smith (Brunswick, ME/Brunswick HS) who carded a career-best score of 70 that was good for a tie for second place individually. Senior James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) and senior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) then tied for fourth individually with rounds of 71. Senior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) were also solid with Hoogstrate firing a round of 76 and Crow a round of 78.

Men’s Golf Moves Into Share of First Place in MIAA Overall Team Standings

KALAMAZOO - With three league competitions left in the MIAA men’s fall golf season, Calvin has moved into a tie for first place in the overall standings. Calvin made up five strokes on league-leading Hope Monday afternoon at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Kalamazoo at the Kalamazoo Country Club. Calvin finished second at the MIAA Jamboree with a team score of 307 strokes, six strokes behind first place Trine and five strokes ahead of Hope which took fourth at Monday’s tournament. Calvin and Hope now share first place with overall team totals of 1,538 strokes. Adrian sits 10 strokes back of the Knights and Flying Dutchmen in the overall standings while Trine is in fourth, 13 strokes out of first place. In Monday’s competition, Calvin had three golfers fire sub-80 round led by junior James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) who carded a score of 73 that was good for third place individually.  Van Noord remains in first place in the overall MIAA individual standings.

Calvin Men’s Golf Team Ties for First at MIAA Jamboree

ALMA - At the midpoint of the season, Calvin is in the thick of the MIAA title hunt. On Saturday at the fourth MIAA Jamboree of the year, Calvin tied for first with rival Hope with a team score of 300 strokes. The Knights are now in sole possession of second place in the MIAA overall standings and are just five strokes behind league-leading Hope.  Saturday’s competition was hosted by Alma at the Pine River Country Club and was the fourth of eight scheduled MIAA Jamborees. Sophomore Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) came up with a clutch performance for Calvin, finishing in a three-way tie for first place individually with a score of 72. It marks the second consecutive tournament Calvin has had a team member earn medalist honors as James Van Noord did so in a tournament on Wednesday hosted by Olivet. Senior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) was right behind Crow with a round of 73 while Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS had a 77, senior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) a 78 and freshman Brad Smit (Brunswick, ME/Brunswick HS) a 79. Calvin swings right back into action on Monday, competing at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Kalamazoo at the Kalamazoo Country Club.

Men’s Golf Second at MIAA Jamboree - Van Noord Claims Medalist Honors

BATTLE CREEK - The Calvin men’s golf team had another solid afternoon, finishing second with a team score of 309 at the third MIAA Jamboree of the year. The MIAA Jamboree was hosted on Wednesday by Olivet at the Bedford Valley Country Club. Hope took first place with a team score of 301 and with the performance, moved into first place in the overall team standings. The Flying Dutchmen hold a five stroke lead over Calvin and Adrian with the Knights and Bulldogs tied for second place in the overall team standings. Calvin junior James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) had a superb afternoon on Wednesday as he claimed medalist honors with a first place score of 71. It marked the second time medalist performance of Van Noord’s career as he also achieved the feat once in 2012.  With his performance on Wednesday, Van Noord also takes over first place in the MIAA individual standings overall. . Calvin is back in action on Saturday, competing at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Alma at the Pine River Country Club at 1 p.m.

Men’s Golf Team Takes First Place at Second MIAA Jamboree With Team Score of 298

ADRIAN - The Calvin men’s golf team captured first place at the second MIAA Jamboree of the season with a team score of 298. The outing was hosted by Adrian on Friday at the Lenawee Country Club. With the team score, Calvin moves within a stroke of first place in the overall MIAA standings, one stroke behind league-leader Adrian. Friday’s MIAA Jamboree was the second of eight league competitions this fall. Host Adrian took second with a team score of 301 followed by Trine at 303 and Hope at 308. The Knights used consistency in its lineup to take first place with senior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking the lead as the Calvin quarterback with a score of 73 that was good for fifth place individually.  Junior James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) and sophomore Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) were right behind with rounds of 74.  Senior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) delivered a clutch round of 77 while sophomore Jason Ziegler (Mount Gilead, OH/Gilead Christian HS) closed out Calvin’s lineup with an 86. David Smith of Kalamazoo was the tournament medalist with a round of 70. Calvin is back in action on September 18 when it competes at the third MIAA Jamboree of the year which will be hosted by Olivet at the Bedford Valley Country Club at 1 p.m.

Calvin Men’s Golf Team Takes Fifth at Opening MIAA Jamboree

MARSHALL - The Calvin men’s golf team opened its 2013 MIAA fall campaign with a fifth place team score of 324 at the opening MIAA Jamboree. Thursday’s MIAA Jamboree was held at the Medalist Golf Club with Albion College serving as host.Calvin finished one stroke ahead of sixth place Kalamazoo and two strokes behind fourth place Albion. Hope took first place team honors with a score of 317. Junior James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) had a stellar outing for Calvin, recording a score of 74 that was good for a tie for second place individually. Senior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was next for Calvin with a 77, good for a tie for eighth place individually. Senior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) had an 84 with sophomore Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Brad Smith (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick HS) rounding out Calvin’s finishers with scores of 89 and 91 respectively. Marty Predmesky of Alma claimed medalist honors with a round of 71. Calvin is back in action on September 13 when it competes at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Adrian at the Lenawee Country Club.

Men’s Golf Concludes Competition at Olivet College Lou Collins Memorial Tournament

BATTLE CREEK – The Calvin men’s golf team concluded competition at the two-day Olivet Lou Collins Memorial Tournament on Saturday. Calvin finished with a Saturday team score of 305, one day after shooting 311 to finish with a two-day total of 616. The competition was held at the Bedford Valley Country Club. Leading Calvin on Saturday were junior James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) and senior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) with rounds of 74. Sophomore Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) tallied a 76 while senior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had an 81 and senior Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and 84. Calvin is back in action on September 5 when it competes at the first MIAA tournament of the year. The tournament will be hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club beginning at 1 p.m.
