OLIVET – Calvin completed a four-game weekend sweep of Olivet Saturday afternoon, defeating the Comets 3-2 and 5-3 in a conference doubleheader. The pair of victories came on the heels of a doubleheader sweep over Olivet Friday afternoon that saw the Knights win by scores of 7-4 and 4-2. Calvin is now 17-13 overall and in second place in the MIAA standings with a 12-8 conference record.

The Calvin baseball team bumped back above the .500 mark with a doubleheader sweep over the visiting Comets of Olivet Friday afternoon, defeating the Comets 7-4 and 4-2 at Calvin Field. Calvin is now 15-13 overall and 10-8 in league play. Calvin received complete-game pitching performances from senior righthanders Keith Spoelstra and Peter Steiner in the twinbill. Spoelstra is now 20-9 in his career at Calvin on the mound while Steiner is 22-8. Steiner helped his own cause in game two by belting a tie-breaking two-run RBI double in the fifth inning. In game one, junior Scott Tipton went 3-for-3 with two doubles while senior Andrew Bosma had an RBI triple.

Calvin got back to the .500 mark with an 8-5 non-conference win over Davenport University Thursday afternoon at Calvin Field. The Knights are now 13-13 on the year, heading into a four-game weekend series with Olivet. Calvin used a six-run third inning uprising to take command of Thursday’s non-conference contest. Davenport (23-13) scored two runs in the first to take an early 2-0 lead but the Knights tied it with a pair in the bottom of the second as freshman Dan Happ singled in a run and freshman Trent Zwiers drove in another with a suicide squeeze bunt. In the third, Calvin used four hits and three walks to take an 8-2 lead.

Two days after being swept by Calvin, Kalamazoo turned the tables on the Knights, taking both ends of a doubleheader on a rain-slickened Calvin Field Saturday afternoon. Kalamazoo took game one 5-4 behing a late-game rally and then feasted on six Calvin errors to gain an 11-3 game two win. With the sweep, Kalamazoo moves into a tie for second place with Hope at 8-6 in the MIAA standings while Calvin falls back into fourth place, dipping to 8-8 in conference play and 12-13 overall. Saturday’s doubleheader was scheduled to be played at Kalamazoo on Saturday but was moved to Calvin because of unplayable field conditions at Kalamazoo. Although Calvin played on its home field Saturday, the Knights were the visiting team in each game.

Calvin swept a doubleheader from visiting Kalamazoo Thursday afternoon, winning by scores of 2-1 and 1-0. Senior Keith Spoelstra tossed a complete-game three-hitter in game one while senior Peter Steiner tossed a complete-game five-hit shutout in game two. Steiner singled in the game-winning run in game one while freshman Trent Zwiers singled in the only run of game two. The sweep moves Calvin into a tie for second place in the MIAA standings with rival Hope at 8-6 in league play. The Knights are now above the .500 mark as well, improving to 12-11 overall. Calvin will travel to Kalamazoo on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

Calvin College senior Andrew Bosma has been named the MIAA Position Player of the Week in baseball. A senior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), Bosma went 8-for-13 at the plate for a .615 average with six RBIs and four runs scored as the Knights took three out of four MIAA games from Albion last week. He went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in a 9-3 win over the Britons. Bosma is being honored as Position Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

Calvin split a home doubleheader Saturday against Albion but still won 3 of 4 overall against the Britons after dropping an extra-innings thriller in the first game and winning the second game by a 9-3 score. The Knights remain tied in the MIAA standings with Hope College at 6-6 in league play.

ALBION - Calvin moved into a tie for third place in the MIAA baseball standings with a doubleheader sweep at Albion Friday afternoon. Calvin claimed game one 7-5 behind a complete-game pitching performance from senior Keith Spoelstra and then took game two 9-2 behind a complete-game pitching effort from senior Peter Steiner. The Knights are now 9-10 overall and 5-5 in the MIAA standings, good for tie for third place with rival Hope.

Calvin College senior Keith Spoelstra has been named the MIAA Pitcher of the Week in baseball. Spoelstra, a native of Oakland, N.J. (Eastern Christian HS), had two complete-game performances on the mound for the Knights last week, including a three-hit shutout of Hope, 3-0. Spoelstra walked one and struck out three against the Flying Dutchmen. He also had a five-hitter in a 4-2 loss to Adrian. Spoelstra, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the third time in his career, held opposing batters to a .186 batting average in the two games.

Calvin split a doubleheader with Hope Saturday afternoon at Calvin Field with the Knights taking the opener 3-0 and Hope winning the nightcap 15-7. In game one, senior Keith Spoelstra was superb, tossing a three-hit complete-game shutout. The shutout was the third of his Calvin career. In game two, Hope broke loose for 16 hits to erase an early 6-1 Calvin lead. In splitting Saturday’s twinbill, Calvin ended up taking three of the four games in the series against the Flying Dutchmen. The Knights are now 7-10 overall and 3-5 in MIAA play.
