Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader to visiting Alma on Friday, falling 9-4 in eight innings in game one and 4-2 in game two. In game one, Calvin mounted a comeback to tie the game 4-4 and had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh but could not bring home the winning run. Alma then scored five times in the top of the eighth to pull away. In game two, Calvin held a 2-0 lead but Alma scored four runs in the top of the seventh with three of the runs unearned to gain a come-from-behind win. The Knights are now just a game ahead of the Scots in the MIAA standings at 14-12 in league play. The two teams will close out the season tomorrow at Alma’s Klenk Park in a doubleheader slated to start at 1 p.m.

COMSTOCK PARK - The Calvin baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Aquinas College at Fifth/Third Ballpark Tuesday afternoon. The Knights dropped game one by an 8-3 score and then fell in game two 5-1. Calvin is now 19-17 on the year heading into a four-game weekend series with Alma. The Knights will host Alma on Friday in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. and will then travel to Alma on Saturday for a 1 p.m. twinbill.

Calvin split a doubleheader with visiting Trine Saturday afternoon at Calvin Field, winning the opener 2-1 before falling in the nightcap 6-5. The Saturday split also gives Calvin a split in the four-game weekend series with the Thunder as the two teams also split two games on Friday. Calvin is now 19-15 overall and in third place in the MIAA standings at 14-10 in league play. The Knights have six games remaining as they will face Aquinas in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at Fifth/Third Ballpark and will then face Alma in a four-game weekend series next weekend.

Calvin split a doubleheader with visiting Trine Friday afternoon at Calvin Field, winning the opener 5-4 and falling in game two 7-6. In game one, Calvin threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the top of the seventh inning. Trine then returned the favor in game two, throwing out a Calvin runner attempting to tie the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. The two teams will play again on Saturday in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Calvin Field.

For the first time in his career, Calvin College senior Peter Steiner has been named the MIAA’s Position Player of the Week in baseball. Steiner shares the award this week with Trine’s Zach Ebersole. Steiner, a senior from Chicago, Ill. (Glenbrook South HS), went 3-for-9 at the plate for a .333 average with six RBIs and four runs scored as the Knights swept a four-game series from Olivet. He delivered a game-winning two-run double on Friday in a 4-2 win over the Comets, then belted a two-run homer that was the difference the next day in a 3-2 victory. Steiner also stole three bases and drew three walks in the series, and pitched a complete-game victory in the 4-2 win, scattering eight hits.

OLIVET – Calvin completed a four-game weekend sweep of Olivet Saturday afternoon, defeating the Comets 3-2 and 5-3 in a conference doubleheader. The pair of victories came on the heels of a doubleheader sweep over Olivet Friday afternoon that saw the Knights win by scores of 7-4 and 4-2. Calvin is now 17-13 overall and in second place in the MIAA standings with a 12-8 conference record.

The Calvin baseball team bumped back above the .500 mark with a doubleheader sweep over the visiting Comets of Olivet Friday afternoon, defeating the Comets 7-4 and 4-2 at Calvin Field. Calvin is now 15-13 overall and 10-8 in league play. Calvin received complete-game pitching performances from senior righthanders Keith Spoelstra and Peter Steiner in the twinbill. Spoelstra is now 20-9 in his career at Calvin on the mound while Steiner is 22-8. Steiner helped his own cause in game two by belting a tie-breaking two-run RBI double in the fifth inning. In game one, junior Scott Tipton went 3-for-3 with two doubles while senior Andrew Bosma had an RBI triple.

Calvin got back to the .500 mark with an 8-5 non-conference win over Davenport University Thursday afternoon at Calvin Field. The Knights are now 13-13 on the year, heading into a four-game weekend series with Olivet. Calvin used a six-run third inning uprising to take command of Thursday’s non-conference contest. Davenport (23-13) scored two runs in the first to take an early 2-0 lead but the Knights tied it with a pair in the bottom of the second as freshman Dan Happ singled in a run and freshman Trent Zwiers drove in another with a suicide squeeze bunt. In the third, Calvin used four hits and three walks to take an 8-2 lead.

Two days after being swept by Calvin, Kalamazoo turned the tables on the Knights, taking both ends of a doubleheader on a rain-slickened Calvin Field Saturday afternoon. Kalamazoo took game one 5-4 behing a late-game rally and then feasted on six Calvin errors to gain an 11-3 game two win. With the sweep, Kalamazoo moves into a tie for second place with Hope at 8-6 in the MIAA standings while Calvin falls back into fourth place, dipping to 8-8 in conference play and 12-13 overall. Saturday’s doubleheader was scheduled to be played at Kalamazoo on Saturday but was moved to Calvin because of unplayable field conditions at Kalamazoo. Although Calvin played on its home field Saturday, the Knights were the visiting team in each game.

Calvin swept a doubleheader from visiting Kalamazoo Thursday afternoon, winning by scores of 2-1 and 1-0. Senior Keith Spoelstra tossed a complete-game three-hitter in game one while senior Peter Steiner tossed a complete-game five-hit shutout in game two. Steiner singled in the game-winning run in game one while freshman Trent Zwiers singled in the only run of game two. The sweep moves Calvin into a tie for second place in the MIAA standings with rival Hope at 8-6 in league play. The Knights are now above the .500 mark as well, improving to 12-11 overall.
