The 2010-11 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 111 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list. The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2010-11 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom. This year’s Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the distinction four consecutive years.
Of the students, 10 are from Calvin.

GRAND RAPIDS - Calvin College has lost one of its legendary Knights. Dr. Marvin A. Zuidema passed away late this afternoon after a battle with illness of just over a year. He was 75. Known as “Dr. Z” to those in the Calvin community, Zuidema touched many lives at Calvin, in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association and in collegiate athletics across the country. A native of Muskegon, Zuidema graduated from Calvin College in 1957. He continued on to earn a master’s degree at Michigan State University and in 1961, returned to Calvin as an instructor and coach in the school’s physical education department. For the next 43 years, he served the Calvin physical education department as a professor, department chair, coach and director of men’s athletics.
Visitation will take place at Zaagman Funeral Home in Grand Rapids on Tuesday, June 21, from 5-to-8 p.m. and on Wednesday, June 22, from 5-to-8 p.m. The funeral will take place on Thursday, June 23 at 3 p.m. at Shawnee Park Christian Reformed Church located directly (east) behind Grand Rapids Christian High School.

Spoelstra and Van Alten Receive All-MIAA Second Team Honors

The All-MIAA baseball teams have been announced and two members of the Calvin baseball team have been selected to the All-MIAA second team. Selected to the All-MIAA second team from Calvin are senior Keith Spoelstra and junior Jake Van Alten. Spoelstra is from Oakland, New Jersey. He is a graduate of Eastern Christian High School and is receiving All-MIAA second team honors for the second time in his career.
A pitcher, Spoelstra was third in the MIAA in pitching victories (5), complete games (6) and innings pitched (48.1) while also ranking ninth in strikeouts (33). Van Alten is from Holland and is a graduate of Holland Christian High School. Calvin’s starting leftfielder over the last three years, Van Alten batted .329 in league play to rank 10th in the MIAA batting race. He also collected nine sacrifice hits and was superb on defense, commiting only one error in 54 chances for a .981 fielding percentage
