Baseball Team Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader at Centre College

DANVILLE. KY - The Calvin baseball team traveled south for its first competition of the year and dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Centre College Friday night, falling 4-2 in game one and 4-1 in game two. In game one, senior Keith Spoelstra took the loss while senior Peter Steiner had a pair of doubles and two runs batted in. Steiner took the mound for game two and took the loss. Junior catcher Scott Tipton accounted for Calvin’s lone run with a solo homer.Calvin was scheduled to face Centre College today at 4:30 p.m. but the game has been cancelled because of thunderstorm that swept through Danville, Kentucky. Calvin will now prepare for its spring trip to Tucson, Arizona. The trip will begin on March 18 when the Knights take on Norwich College in a doubleheader.

The Calvin baseball team will open its 2011 season with a three-game weekend series at Centre College (KY) March 4 and 5. The Knights will then participate in seven games in Tucson, Arizona, March 18-22. The Knights will return home to open its MIAA campaign with a four-game series against defending league champion Adrian March 25 and 26. Calvin returns 19 letterwinners from its 2010 team that finished 18-20 overall and in fourth place in the MIAA with a 15-13 conference record. The Knights return a first team All-MIAA selection in senior pitcher Keith Spoelstra and a second All-MIAA selection in first baseman/DH Andrew Bosma (pictured left). Spoelstra is one of four returning pitchers from Calvin’s starting rotation from a year ago. Other returning pitchers from the Calvin starting rotation include seniors Peter Steiner and Jeff Groenewold and sophomore Eric Poencet. Calvin Baseball Team Gives Back - Assisting at Congress Elementary School

The Calvin baseball team has been active in the offseason but the activity of the team this fall has been in volunteer work at Congress Elementary School - part of the Grand Rapids Public Schools Association. Myrna Anderson, a senior writer from Calvin’s office of Communications and Marketing caught up with the baseball team at Congress Elementary School and filed this report:
