PHOENIX, AZ - The Calvin baseball team is currently 2-2 on its spring trip in Arizona and 2-4 overall on the season. On Friday, Calvin suffered a 13-4 defeat to Hamline University but came back to sweep a doubleheader from Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday by scores of 11-10 and 10-7. Sophomores Peter Steiner and Keith Spoelstra picked up the victories in the doubleheader sweep.
On Monday, Calvin suffered a 17-15 defeat to Eastern Connecticut State, ranked fifth in the most recent Division III Top 25 poll of the year.

WESTERVILLE, OH—Calvin was unable to hold on to a pair of late-inning leads and in the process dropped both ends of a season-opening doubleheader at Otterbein College Saturday afternoon. In the opener, Calvin carried a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth but the host Cardinals (3-0) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and held Calvin scoreless in the top of the seventh to gain a 2-1 win.
In game two, Calvin led 7-3 heading into the top of the seventh but Otterbein struck back with four runs to tie the game and then won the game 8-7 on a walk and a double in the bottom of the eighth.

With their league-best pitching staff completely intact after a championship season in 2008, the Knights will aim to capture their second straight MIAA title this spring behind the arms of seniors Nate Pocock (Wayland, Mass.) and Kyle Cousins (Holland).
And with a proven supporting cast on the mound, along with the return of junior Matt Schepel (Grand Rapids), the MIAA’s reigning home run champion, Calvin has positioned itself to do just that.

Howard Smith and Ryan Powell of the NCAA visited the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex on Saturday. Representing the NCAA Double-a Zone blog, Smith and Powell took in part of Calvin’s swimming and diving meet with Kalamazoo on Saturday. The visit was part of a weekend tour through the state of Michigan entitled: The Michigan Sports Extravaganza.
