Baseball Sweeps Four-Game Series From Olivet

OLIVET – Calvin completed a four-game weekend sweep of Olivet Saturday afternoon, defeating the Comets 3-2 and 5-3 in a conference doubleheader. The pair of victories came on the heels of a doubleheader sweep over Olivet Friday afternoon that saw the Knights win by scores of 7-4 and 4-2. Calvin is now 17-13 overall and in second place in the MIAA standings with a 12-8 conference record.

Baseball Takes Both Ends of a Doubleheader From Visiting Olivet

The Calvin baseball team bumped back above the .500 mark with a doubleheader sweep over the visiting Comets of Olivet Friday afternoon, defeating the Comets 7-4 and 4-2 at Calvin Field. Calvin is now 15-13 overall and 10-8 in league play. Calvin received complete-game pitching performances from senior righthanders Keith Spoelstra and Peter Steiner in the twinbill. Spoelstra is now 20-9 in his career at Calvin on the mound while Steiner is 22-8. Steiner helped his own cause in game two by belting a tie-breaking two-run RBI double in the fifth inning. In game one, junior Scott Tipton went 3-for-3 with two doubles while senior Andrew Bosma had an RBI triple.

Baseball Defeats Davenport

Calvin got back to the .500 mark with an 8-5 non-conference win over Davenport University Thursday afternoon at Calvin Field. The Knights are now 13-13 on the year, heading into a four-game weekend series with Olivet. Calvin used a six-run third inning uprising to take command of Thursday’s non-conference contest. Davenport (23-13) scored two runs in the first to take an early 2-0 lead but the Knights tied it with a pair in the bottom of the second as freshman Dan Happ singled in a run and freshman Trent Zwiers drove in another with a suicide squeeze bunt. In the third, Calvin used four hits and three walks to take an 8-2 lead.
