Baseball Splits Twinbill With Grinnell College in Vero Beach

VERO BEACH, FL – The Calvin baseball team split a doubleheader with Grinnell College on Monday afternoon, falling in the opener 2-1 and then coming back to win the nightcap 6-4.
In the opener, Calvin was unable to come up with enough run support to aid junior Jeff Groenewold (Chicago, IL) who went the distance but suffered the hard-luck loss.

VERO BEACH, FL – The Calvin baseball team picked up its first victory of the year on Saturday in defeating Western Connecticut State 13-8 in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader.
In the opener, Calvin (1-3) suffered a 3-1 defeat despite a strong pitching performance from senior Ben Sietsema (Northpointe Christian HS). Sietsema (0-2) struck out seven batters in the loss. Sophomore Scott Tipton (Stow, OH) and senior Kyle Gurzynski (Ludington HS) both went 2-for-3 for the Knights in the loss.

TERRE HAUTE, IN—In its season debut, the Calvin baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at nationally-ranked Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, falling 5-1 and 12-1. Ranked 16th in the most recent d3baseball.com Top 25 poll, Rose-Hulman jumped on Calvin for four runs in the opening three innings of game one to build a 4-0 lead.

John Sparks Pre-Season Audio Interview
The 2010 Calvin baseball season is set to open on March 6 at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. Last year, Calvin finished 23-17 overall and in second place in the MIAA standings with a 20-8 conference record. The Calvin Sports Information Department caught up with head coach John Sparks recently to talk about the upcoming season. Tyler Berger Named To All-Mideast Region Baseball Team

Calvin College freshman Tyler Berger has been named to the Division III All-Mideast Region third team by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Berger took over the starting job in centerfield this spring for the Knights and batted a team-leading .400 with 31 runs scored and 31 runs batted in. He also belted four home runs, 10 doubles and two triples for a slugging percentage of .626. In the field, Berger was stellar, committing just two errors in 72 chances for a fielding percentage of .971.
Sietsema & Pocock Receive MIAA Player of the Week Honors

Two members of the Calvin baseball team have received MIAA Player of the Week honors.
Junior Ben Sietsema has been named MIAA Co-Pitcher of the Week along with Adrian’s Ryan Domschot. It marks the third time that Sietsema has received MIAA Pitcher of the Week accolades this spring. In addition, senior Nate Pocock has been named MIAA Player of the Week.

Five members of the Calvin baseball team have received All-MIAA honors. Junior Ben Sietsema and freshman Tyler Berger have been named to the All-MIAA first team while senior Nate Pocock, junior Matt Schepel and sophomore Keith Spoelstra have been named to the All-MIAA second team.
Baseball Closes Out Season With Sweep of Albion

The Calvin baseball team took two games from Albion on Friday, winning 6-0 in game one and 2-0 in game two. The Knights finish the year at 23-17 and in second place in the final MIAA standings at 20-8. Junior Ben Sietsema tossed the shutout in game one - his third shutout of the year - as he limited the Britons to six hits while upping his season record to 8-2. Senior Nate Pocock ripped a two-run homer while junior Matt Schepel had a run-scoring triple. In game two, sophomore Jeff Groenewold went the distance for his first collegiate shutout victory. Groenewold gave up just three hits while Pocock ripped another two-run homer.

GRAND RAPIDS—Senior Day at Calvin Field couldn’t have been sweeter for the Calvin baseball team.
Nate Pocock went 6-for-7 at the plate, Chris Blacklidge belted a solo homerun in Game Two and the Knights’ offense engineered a 27-run afternoon in a doubleheader sweep of Albion, 12-3 and 15-1.
Baseball Splits With Adrian - Bulldogs Clinch Outright MIAA Title

GRAND RAPIDS—A late-inning comeback by the visiting Bulldogs of Adrian prevented Calvin from gaining a doubleheader sweep Monday afternoon. Calvin captured Monday’s opener 7-3 but fell 7-5 in game two after leading 5-1 through five innings. The game two victory allowed Adrian to clinch the outright MIAA title and earn the league’s automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA III Tournament.
