OLIVET - Calvin split a doubleheader at Olivet on Friday, winning game one 6-3 and losing game two 4-3. The Knights are now 11-16 overall and 8-10 in MIAA competition.
In game one, junior Peter Steiner (Chicago, IL) went the distance, striking out four and walking one while scattering seven hits. Steiner was staked to an early lead as the Knights scored four times in the top of the first inning on the strength of two hits and one Olivet error. Freshman Ben Cok (Grand Rapids Christian HS) smashed his second home run of the season in the inning while junior Cody Batchelor (Durango, CO) had an RBI single.

KENTWOOD - Calvin dipped to 10-15 overall with a 6-4 loss to Davenport University Monday afternoon at East Kentwood High School. The game followed a familiar pattern for the Knights as Calvin fell behind early only to mount a late comeback effort that fell just short.
Davenport (16-20) grabbed a 2-1 lead on a two-run homer in the bottom of the first after the Knights had taken a 1-0 lead on a run-scoring double in the top of the first by junior Andrew Bosma (Holland Christian HS) that plated sophomore Tyler Berger (Grand Rapids Christian HS) from first.

A dominating one-hit pitching performance by Calvin junior Keith Spoelstra allowed the Knights to split a doubleheader with visiting Kalamazoo Saturday and win three of four in the series. A native of Oakland, New Jersey, Spoelstra (Eastern Christian HS) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before giving up a one-out solo homerun to right by Kalamazoo’s Alex Crook. Spoelstra retired the final eight batters however, facing just one batter above the minimum in gaining his fourth victory of the year. Spoelstra (4-2) struck out five batters and walked one. He is now 3-1 in league play with a 1.35 earned run average against conference opponents.

KALAMAZOO—Calvin took both ends of a doubleheader at Kalamazoo, winning by scores of 12-5 and 6-1. The pair of victories moves Calvin into a tie for fifth place in the MIAA standings with Alma as the Knights are now 6-8 in league play, 9-13 overall and owners of a modest four-game win streak.
In game one, Calvin exploded for nine runs in the top of the first inning, using six hits and two Kalamazoo errors. Sophomore Scott Tipton (Stow, OH) and senior Kyle Gurzynski (Ludington HS) both had two-run RBI singles in the inning while sophomore Tyler Berger had an RBI double. Berger later cranked a two-run homer to left-center in the fifth.

ALBION - Calvin bounced back with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday to salvage a split of a four-game weekend series with Albion. On Friday, Calvin suffered a pair of defeats to Albion at home but on Saturday, the Knights rode the strong arms of junior righthanders Jeff Groenewold (Chicago, IL) and Keith Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ) for a pair of road wins.
In game one on Saturday, Groenewold went the distance in pitching the Knights to an 8-3 victory. In game two, Spoelstra tossed a complete-game three-hitter in helping the Knights record a 4-1 win.

Coming into Friday with a 2-6 league record (5-11 overall), and competing desperately to stay in the league race, the Knights were unable to pull off a win in either game of Friday afternoon’s home doubleheader against league opponent Albion College.
Calvin fell to superior pitching in game one, losing by a score of 5-1 and failing to get a runner on base until the sixth inning. Game two saw a much closer game as the offense exploded in the first inning, but Albion managed to put a few more ticks on the run card by the end and won the game 12-8. The losses pushed Calvin’s record to 2-8 in the conference and 5-13 overall.

HOLLAND—Calvin dropped a pair of games at Hope on Monday, falling 7-1 and 6-2. The Knights are now 5-11 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
Defensive miscues cost Calvin in both games. In game one, Calvin committed three errors which led to four unearned runs. In game two, Calvin commited four errors which led to four more unearned runs. In game two, Calvin outhit Hope 8-6 but stranded eight baserunners.

The Calvin baseball team split a doubleheader with rival Hope Thursday afternoon at Calvin Field, falling 10-9 in the opener and coming back to win game two 7-4. Junior Peter Steiner ran his career record to 3-0 against Hope with the game two win as he tossed a complete-game victory. Senior Kyle Gurzyski went 3-for-3 in game two with a triple while junior Andrew Bosma went 2-for-4 with a home run. In game one, Hope rallied back from an 8-6 deficit with a three-run sixth inning. Hope had 13 hits and Calvin 10 in game one. Freshman Ben Cok and senior Rob Kool had two hits apiece in game one. Junior Cody Batchelor took the loss in relief of starter Ben Sietsema. -

For the second time in his collegiate career, Calvin College junior Keith Spoelstra has been named MIAA Pitcher of the Week in baseball for games played through March 29. Spoelstra also received the award as a freshman during the final week of the 2008 MIAA season.
A native of Oakland, New Jersey, Spoelstra fired a complete-game six-hitter Monday afternoon in pitching the Knights to a 3-1 road victory over defending MIAA champion Adrian. A graduate of Eastern Christian High School, Spoelstra did not allow an earned run, walked one and struck out six in his seven innings of work. Spoelstra is currently 2-1 on the season with a team-leading 19 strikeouts. Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Hope in a doubleheader at Calvin Field at 2:00 p.m.

ADRIAN - A sterling pitching performance by junior Keith Spoelstra allowed Calvin to gain a split of a doubleheader at Adrian Monday afternoon. A native of Oakland, New Jersey, Spoelstra scattered six hits over seven innings to improve to 2-1 on the season. The Eastern Christian High School graduate struck out six batters and walked only one. Spoelstra received all the run support he would need in the early innings as junior Peter Steiner (Chicago, IL) drove in a run in the top of the first on a single to right and freshman Tyler Tos (Walnut Creek, CA) added a run-scoring single in the second that brought home sophomore Jake VanAlten (Holland Christian HS) who led of the inning with a triple.« First < 9 10 11 12 13 > Last »
