Calvin Lands Three on All-MIAA Baseball Teams

All-MIAA Baseball Release - 2010

Three members of the Calvin baseball team have received All-MIAA honors. Junior Keith Spoelstra has been named to the All-MIAA first team while junior Andrew Bosma and sophomore Tyler Berger have been named to the All-MIAA second team.Spoelstra is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA first team. In conference play, Spoelstra was particularly effective, producing a 5-2 record with a league-leading 1.99 earned run average.

Baseball Closes Out Season With Four-Game Series Sweep of Alma - Finishes Fourth in MIAA Standings

ALMA - Calvin closed out its 2010 campaign with a pair of victories at Alma Wednesday afternoon, winning by scores of 3-1 and 8-2. The pair of victories gave Calvin a four-game sweep of the Scots and allowed the Knights to move past Albion and finish in sole possession of fourth place in the final MIAA standings with a 15-13 conference record. The Knights also finish with an overall mark of 19-20.

Like the opening two games against Alma on Monday, Calvin received sterling pitching performances on Wednesday as juniors Keith Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) and Jeff Groenewold (Chicago, IL/Timothy Christian HS) tossed complete-game victories.

Baseball Takes Two From Alma - Moves Within a Game of Fourth Place in MIAA Standings

Calvin used back-to-back pitching gems to move within a game of fourth place in the MIAA standings, sweeping a doubleheader from visiting Alma Monday afternoon at Calvin Field. Calvin won the opener 2-1 behind a three-hit complete-game pitching performance by junior Peter Steiner (Chicago, IL/Glenbrook South HS). Calvin won the nightcap 5-2 behind a sterling effort by freshman Eric Poencet. Steiner carried a no-hitter through four innings with the Scots (10-28 overall, 6-20 MIAA) breaking through for their first hit and only run in the fifth inning. Calvin (17-20 overall, 13-13 MIAA) scored a run in the second on an RBI groundout by freshman Drew Vos (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and added another in the third on a run-scoring single by junior Tyler Berger (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS).

Calvin Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Aquinas - Snaps 10-Game Losing Streak Against Saints

The Calvin baseball team split a doubleheader with non-conference rival Aquinas Tuesday afternoon at Fifth/Third Ballpark and in the process, snapped a 10-game losing streak against the Saints dating back to the 2001 season. Aquinas captured game one 8-4 but Calvin came back to win game two 10-0 behind a grand slam home run by junior Andrew Bosma in the third inning. Bosma drove in eight runs in the doubleheader, raising his season RBI total to 32, moving him into a tie for seventh place on the Calvin single-season RBI list.  Bosma went 3-for-6 in the doubleheader to raise his season batting average to .396. Senior Rob Kool went the distance in game two to pick up his second collegiate victory on the mound. Junior Tyler Berger also went 4-for-7 in the doubleheader with three runs batted in, raising his season batting average to .339.

Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Trine University - Remains in Fifth Place in MIAA Standings

(Photo by Sandy Palmatter) - ANGOLA, IN - Calvin split a doubleheader at Trine University on Saturday, falling 4-2 in game one and them coming back to win the nightcap 5-4. In game two, junior Keith Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) flirted with a no-hit bid for the second straight week. Spoelstra carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning until the Thunder broke up the bid with a one-out single.

Trine’s Brad Laucher then connected on a two-run homer to cut Calvin’s 4-0 lead in half. Calvin (14-19 overall, 11-13 MIAA) added an important insurance run in the top of the seventh as sophomore Jake VanAlten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Andrew Bosma (Holland/Holland Christian HS) to put the Knights up 5-2.

Baseball Splits With Trine at Calvin Field Thursday Afternoon

With rain clouds looming ominously on the horizon of Calvin Field on Calvin College’s campus, the Knights went to work Thursday afternoon against what has been recently an extremely hot Trine Thunder team.  The Knights came into the day the 5th place team in the conference with a 9-11 MIAA record, four games behind a three-way second place tie that Trine shares with Hope and Albion at 13-7.  Trine took game one of the doubleheader 5-2, but the Knights managed to split the day by taking the second game 6-3 on some great pitching from a variety of Calvin pitchers.

Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Olivet

Calvin split a doubleheader with the visiting Comets of Olivet on Saturday, winning the opener 7-5 and losing the nightcap 8-2. The Knights are now 12-17 overall and 9-11 in MIAA play.

In game one, Calvin built a 4-0 lead with three runs in the first and one in the second. Freshman Tyler Tos (Walnut Creek, CA) had a two-run RBI single in the first. Olivet (6-23, overall 4-16 MIAA) came back with two runs in the top of the third but the Knights answered with a run in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly to center by Tos that plated freshman Ben Cok (Grand Rapids Christian HS) who had reached on a one-out double.

OLIVET - Calvin split a doubleheader at Olivet on Friday, winning game one 6-3 and losing game two 4-3. The Knights are now 11-16 overall and 8-10 in MIAA competition.

In game one, junior Peter Steiner (Chicago, IL) went the distance, striking out four and walking one while scattering seven hits. Steiner was staked to an early lead as the Knights scored four times in the top of the first inning on the strength of two hits and one Olivet error. Freshman Ben Cok (Grand Rapids Christian HS) smashed his second home run of the season in the inning while junior Cody Batchelor (Durango, CO) had an RBI single.

Baseball Falls 6-4 to Davenport

KENTWOOD - Calvin dipped to 10-15 overall with a 6-4 loss to Davenport University Monday afternoon at East Kentwood High School. The game followed a familiar pattern for the Knights as Calvin fell behind early only to mount a late comeback effort that fell just short.

Davenport (16-20) grabbed a 2-1 lead on a two-run homer in the bottom of the first after the Knights had taken a 1-0 lead on a run-scoring double in the top of the first by junior Andrew Bosma (Holland Christian HS) that plated sophomore Tyler Berger (Grand Rapids Christian HS) from first.

One-Hitter by Spoelstra Gives Calvin Baseball Team Doubleheader Split With Kalamazoo

A dominating one-hit pitching performance by Calvin junior Keith Spoelstra allowed the Knights to split a doubleheader with visiting Kalamazoo Saturday and win three of four in the series. A native of Oakland, New Jersey, Spoelstra (Eastern Christian HS) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before giving up a one-out solo homerun to right by Kalamazoo’s Alex Crook. Spoelstra retired the final eight batters however, facing just one batter above the minimum in gaining his fourth victory of the year. Spoelstra (4-2) struck out five batters and walked one. He is now 3-1 in league play with a 1.35 earned run average against conference opponents.
