Calvin Takes Early Lead in MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings

A record-setting fall sports season has allowed Calvin to build an early lead in the MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings. Through the recently completed MIAA fall sports season, Calvin leads the standings with 100 points, four points better than Hope. In the MIAA Women’s All-Sports Standings, Calvin has a first place total of 58 points with Hope second with 53. Hope leads the MIAA Men’s All-Sports standings with 43 points, one point better than Calvin. This fall, Calvin captured a record six MIAA titles – winning conference crowns in men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf and volleyball.

2011-12 MIAA Academic Honor Roll
The 2011-12 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic - Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 123 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list. The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2010-11 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom.

“Third basemen (around the league) will be glad when he graduates,” said men’s athletic director Jim Timmer, about Calvin baseball senior Jake Van Alten. Van Alten, a four-year starter in the outfield, is a bunt specialist. Continued Timmer: “He’s got 400 at-bats in his Calvin career, and I think he has squared to bunt in about 350 of them.”
Ben Cok Named to All-MIAA First Team in Baseball

Calvin College junior Ben Cok has been named to the All-MIAA first team in baseball. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Cok batted .321 in 28 league games this spring while driving in 17 runs and scoring 18 runs himself. He was credited with nine extra-base hits including three home runs. He had a slugging percentage of .526. He was also 11-for-12 in stole base attempts. Cok finished tied for second in the MIAA in home runs, tied for sixth in runs scored, tied for fourth in runs batted in, tied for fifth in total bases and tied for second in stolen bases. He also led the MIAA in walks (16) and was third in on-base percentage (.444) and slugging percentage. A third baseman, Cok is receiving All-MIAA first team honors for the first time in his career.
Baseball Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader at Hope in Season Finale

HOLLAND - The Calvin baseball team closed out its 2012 season by dropping both ends of a doubleheader at rival Hope on Saturday. Calvin dropped the first game 3-0 and the second game 2-1 in eight innings. In game one, Calvin (15-25 overall, 9-19 MIAA) was limited to five hits while Hope scored single runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings. Freshman Nate Schepers took the loss to finish his freshman campaign with a 4-3 record. In game two, Calvin tied the game 1-1 in the the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by junior Mike Fuller. In the eighth, Calvin had a chance to take the lead but stranded a runner at third base. Hope then used a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a basehit to win the game in the bottom of the eighth. Sophomore Jeff Victor took the hard-luck loss to fall to 1-5 on the year. Calvin had six hits in the game while freshman Grant Van Putten stole his 21st base of the season which ranks as a Calvin single-season record.
Baseball Team Splits Doubleheader With Hope

The Calvin baseball team split a doubleheader with Hope Friday afternoon at Calvin Field. A large crowd was treated to a pair of excellent pitching performances. Game one went to Hope 4-3 while game two went to Calvin 1-0. In the opener, Hope starter Adam Clements outdueled Calvin’s Joe Lambers for the win. Hope withstood a seventh-inning rally by Calvin with the Knights stranding the tying run on second base. Freshman Grant Van Putten swiped a pair of bases in game one to set a new Calvin single-season record for thefts. Van Putten now has 20 steals, breaking the previous mark of 19 set by Peter Steiner last spring. In game two, junior Ben Cok blasted a home run to account for the only run of the game. The Cok homer came in the bottom of the fourth and was his third of the year. Meanwhile, sophomore Grant Vander Wall went the distance to record the shutout victory. Vander Wall outdueled Hope starter Danny Ditmar for the win. It marked the second straight year Vander Wall has edged Ditmar in a pitcher’s duel as Vander Wall edged Ditmar 2-1 a year ago in Holland. Calvin and Hope will conclude the four-game weekend series on Saturday at Hope in a 1 p.m. twinbill.
Baseball Extends Win Streak to Three Games With Non-Conference Win Over Aquinas

The Knights came through with an 8-3 victory over crosstown rival Aquinas on Tuesday. Freshman Jeremy Kamp started for the Knights, and held the Saints scoreless in his four innings of work. Calvin’s bats were silent in the first two innings, but the Knights drew first blood in the bottom of the third. Freshman Grant Van Putten knocked a single passed the drawn-in infield to score Dan Miedema, putting the Knights on top 1-0. Calvin added three runs in the fourth. Mike Fuller drew a walk to score a run and Drew Vos and Miedema added RBI groundouts to put Calvin on top by four. Tom Bouwkamp, who came on in the sixth, got the win for the Knights, who improved their record to 14-22 overall. Calvin will now prepare to host rival Hope on Friday at 2 p.m. in a doubleheader.
Joe Lambers Named MIAA Pitcher of the Week in Baseball

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin lefthander Joe Lambers its Pitcher of the Week for games played through April 30. Lambers, a senior from Grosse Pointe (Grosse Pointe South HS), teamed up with Nate Schepers to throw Calvin’s first no-hitter ever in an MIAA game as the Knights defeated Albion, 6-2. Lambers struck out eight and walked two in five innings of work as Calvin recorded the first no-hitter in an MIAA game since 2009. He also struck out seven and allowed two earned runs in 5-1/3 innings in a 4-1 loss to Alma. Lambers is being honored as Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career.
Lambers and Schepers Combine on No-Hitter to Lead Calvin Doubleheader Sweep of Albion

Joe Lambers and Nate Schepers combined for a no-hitter on Friday, helping Calvin to a 6-2 victory over Albion on Friday. The no-hitter is the first by Calvin in an MIAA contest.
A senior at Calvin, Lambers pitched the first five innings, striking out eight and walking two, while Schepers (Holland Christian HS), a freshman, came on to pitch the final two innings, walking one batter. The no-hitter was the 26th in an MIAA game since 1958 and the first since Hope’s Derek Fairchild tossed a no-no against Albion in 2009.
It is also the first combined no-hitter recorded since 1958. Calvin then came back to win 11-3 in game two behind a 12-hit attack. Freshman Grant Van Putten (Holland Christian HS), senior Scott Tipton (Stow, OH), freshman Ben Wohl (Canton, Mich.) and junior Drew Vos (Grand Rapids Christian HS) all had two hits apiece. Schepers came on in relief of sophomore starter Grant Vander Wall to gain the win to run his season record to 4-2.
