Men’s Basketball Falls in MIAA Tournament Title Game to Hope 72-67

HOLLAND - The Calvin men’s basketball team saw its season come to an end Saturday night as the Knights suffered a 72-67 defeat to rival Hope in the MIAA Tournament Championship game at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse. Calvin trailed 36-29 at halftime and later fell behind by 16 points in the second half. Calvin (16-12) mounted a late rally, closing to within three at 68-65 in the final minute of play but Hope converted two free throws and then a layup in the closing seconds to seal the win. Sophomore Tom Snikkers was Calvin’s lone player in double-digits in scoring with 20 points. Calvin shot 40.0 percent from the field but just 15.8 percent (3 of 19) from three-point range. Concluding their Calvin careers were Calvin seniors Danny Rodts, Trent Salo, Brent Schuster and Brad Schnyders. In the contest, freshman Jordan Brink connected on a pair of free throws to finish the year 52-of-56 at the line for a new Calvin single-season record of 92.9 percent (minimum 50 free throw attempts). The old record had been 92.0 percent shared by Greg Broene (1973-74) and Matt Veltema (2009-10).
Men’s Basketball Defeats Albion 68-53 in MIAA Tournament Semifinals

HOLLAND - The Calvin men’s basketball team defeated Albion 68-53 in the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament Friday night at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse. Calvin will face rival Hope Saturday night in the MIAA Tournament Championship game at 7:30 p.m. Calvin led 25-20 at halftime but broke loose in the second half by connecting on its first six three-point attempts in the second half. Senior Trent Salo was the catalyst for the Calvin second half surge with three second half trifectas. Senior Brad Schnyders led Calvin in scoring with 15 points including 11 in the first half. Brent Schuster had 11 points and Salo 10. Saturday’s MIAA Tournament title game will mark the 179th meeting between Calvin and Hope in a series that Hope leads 91-87. It will also mark the third consecutive year that the two rivals will meet in the MIAA Tournament final. The winner will receive an automatic bid to next week’s NCAA III Tournament.

Calvin advanced to the semifinal round of the MIAA tournament play with a 72-65 victory over Trine on Wednesday night. Calvin trailed 31-20 but scored the final 16 points of the first half to take a 36-31 halftime lead. Trine crept to within a point in the second half but the Knights never gave up the lead, sinking several clutch free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Sophomore Tom Snikkers led the Knights with 18 points. Senior Danny Rodts added 13 points and led the Knights 9 rebounds. Freshman Jordan Brink chipped in 15 points and junior Brian Haverdink notched nine points off the bench.Scott Rogers led Trine with 17 points. Calvin will face Albion at 6 pm in Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse in an semifinal game Friday night. Hope will face Adrian in the second semifinal game at 8:15 p.m.
