Men’s Basketball Holds Off Albion 51-45 to Gain Second Place in Final MIAA Standings

ALBION - The Calvin men’s basketball team used a strong final surge to defeat Alboion 51-45 Saturday afternoon at Kresge Gymnasium. With the win, Calvin (14-11 overall) finishes in sole possession of second place in the final MIAA regular season standings at 9-5 in league play. Calvin also gains the second seed for the MIAA Tournament next week and will host Trine in a first round game next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Trailing 45-44 with just under five minutes left to play on Saturday, Calvin scored the final seven points sparked by a three-pointer by senior Brent Schuster that put the Knights ahead to stay. Seniors Trent Salo and Danny Rodts followed with clutch free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Sophomore Tom Snikkers finished the game with 16 points while Schuster had 10.

Men’s Basketball Team Clinches Home Court Advantage for First Rd of MIAA Tourney With Win at Trine

ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin men’s basketball team clinched homecourt advantage for the first round of the MIAA Tournament with a 71-67 victory at Trine University Wednesday night. With the win, Calvin improves to 13-11 overall and 8-5 in the MIAA. The Knights are assured of at least the the number-three seed for next week’s MIAA Tournament and can gain the number-two seed with a win at Albion on Saturday. Albion is tied with Calvin for second place in the MIAA standings at 8-5 as the Britons defeated Hope 78-76 in overtime Wednesday night. The winner of Saturday’s Calvin-Albion contest will finish in sole possession of second place in the MIAA regular season standings while the loser will finish in third place - perhaps in a tie with Olivet - but will hold the third seed for the MIAA Tournament because of tiebreaker advantages over the Comets.

Men’s Basketball Topples Alma 116-65 on Senior Day at Van Noord Arena

Calvin’s four seniors stepped up in their final regular season home game Saturday afternoon as the quartet combined for 62 of Calvin’s points in a 116-65 win over Alma Saturday afternoon. Senior Brent Schuster scored a career-high 21 points while senior Brad Schnyders had a career-high 16 points. Senior Trent Salo had 13 points while senior Danny Rodts contributed 12 points. Freshman Jordan Brink also had 16 points and eight rebounds. As a team, Calvin was 16 of 24 from three-point range as the Knights were just two triples shy of matching the Calvin single-game record for three-pointers in a game. Freshman Tyler Kruis added eight points and eight rebounds while sophomore Bryan Powell had eight points. With the win, Calvin remains in second place in the MIAA standings, one game ahead of Adrian and Olivet.
