Tyler Kruis Named MIAA Player of the Week in Men’s Basketball

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  Ė The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin center Tyler Kruis its Player of the Week in menís basketball for games played through December 8. Kruis, a senior from Grand Rapids (Grandville Calvin Christian HS), averaged 21.5 points and 6.5 rebounds during the MIAA/CCIW Challenge at Calvin over the weekend. He scored 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting from the field, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists in a 74-68 loss to Carthage, Wis. He then added 17 points and six rebounds as the Knights posted an impressive 78-51 victory over Wheaton, Ill. in a battle of nationally-ranked teams. Kruis, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time this season and second time in his career, shot 75 percent (18 of 24) from the field during the tournament.Calvin is back in action on December 14 when it hosts Finlandia University at 3 p.m.

Men’s Basketball Rolls to 78-51 Win Over Wheaton at MIAA/CCIW Challenge

Calvin faced off against fellow top-25 ranked opponent Wheaton on Saturday afternoon on the second day of MIAA/CCIW Challenge. The Knights came in ranked ninth nationally while Wheaton came in ranked 13th. Playing arguably its most complete half of the season in the first half, Calvin took the lead early and did not look back, claiming a 78-51 victory. The final score marked Calvinís largest-ever margin of victory over Wheaton in menís basketball and snapped a seven-game losing streak against Wheaton dating back to 2005.Sophomore Jordan Daley and senior Tyler Kruis led the Knights with 17 points each. Daley’s point total tied a career high. Junior Jordan Brink added 16 points.The Knights now look forward to next week Saturday when they welcome Finlandia to Van Noord Arena. Next Saturday’s contest will start at 3 p.m.

Men’s Basketball Defeated by Carthage 72-68 in MIAA/CCIW Challenge

The Calvin men’s basketball team hosted a basketball tournament for the third straight weekend at Van Noord Arena, playing Carthage College in the second game of the MIAA-CCIW Challenge. Using a strong second half effort, Carthage defeated Calvin 74-68. In the first matchup of the night, Wheaton defeated Hope 80-61. Calvin, now 5-2, faces Wheaton tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. in the final contest of the Challenge. The Thunder come in with a record of 5-2 but are ranked #13 in the latest top 25 poll. In the first matchup of the afternoon, Hope plays Carthage at 1 p.m.

Calvin Hands Aquinas 77-55 Defeat in Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic

Calvin men’s basketball faced off against the Saints of Aquinas College in the fourth and final contest of the Grand Rapids Hall of Fame Classic on Saturday evening. The Knights were looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the year, an 85-66 loss against the Golden Eagles of Cornerstone on Friday night. Calvin did just that, defeating Aquinas 77-55 to improve to 5-1 on the year. Junior guard Jordan Brink led the Knights offensively with 18 points, while senior Mickey DeVries added 15 points and seven rebounds. Senior Tyler Kruis had 12 points. Brink was named to the all-tournament team for the second straight year.

Men’s Basketball Suffers First Loss of Season in 85-66 Defeat to Cornerstone in Hall of Fame Tourney

Calvin men’s basketball returned to work on Friday evening after a short Thanksgiving break, hosting the Grand Rapids Hall of Fame Classic at Van Noord Arena this weekend. The Knights faced off against the Golden Eagles of Cornerstone University, playing in the second matchup of the evening as Hope College took a come-from-behind win from Aquinas College, 69-67, in the tournament opener. Friday night’s game was the 24th meeting between the Knights and Golden Eagles, with Calvin holding a 16-7 series advantage. Cornerstone added a win to its end of the series by the time the clock read all zeroes, handing Calvin its first loss of the season 85-66. Sophomore B.J. Van Loo led the Knights with 16 points and seven rebounds while junior Jordan Brink had 14 points. Calvin is back in action on Saturday, facing Aquinas at 8 p.m. with Hope facing Cornerstone in the 6 p.m. contest.

Men’s Basketball Defeats Manchester 78-50 to Improve to 4-0 on Season

MANCHESTER, IN - The 11th-ranked Calvin men’s basketball team rolled to a 78-50 victory at Manchester University Tuesday night to improve to 4-0 on the young season. After trailing 20-18 early, Calvin put on a 21-8 scoring run to grab a 39-28 halftime advantage. Calvin then held Manchester to 22 second half points while continuing to shoot at a 50 percent clip to put the game away. Junior guard Jordan Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) led Calvin with 17 points including four three-pointers. Brink connected on three consecutive triples midway through the second half that allowed the Knights to build a 17-point lead. Brink was part of a solid back-court combo as sophomore guard Jordan Daley (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. Inside, Calvin featured the combo of senior Tyler Kruis (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS) and junior Tyler Dykstra (Holland/Holland Christian HS) as Kruis had 11 points and two blocks while Dykstra had 13 points and four boards. Senior Mickey DeVries (Lansing/Lansing Christian HS) was also stellar with eight points and eight rebounds. Calvin will now prepare to host the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament Friday and Saturday at Van Noord Arena. Friday games will see Hope facing Aquinas at 6 p.m. and Calvin facing Cornerstone at 8 p.m. On Saturday, Hope will meet Cornerstone at 6 p.m. and Calvin will face Aquinas at 8 p.m. Tickets for each day are $10.00 and will be available at the door each night.

Men’s Hoops Claims Calvin Tip-off Tourney Title with 97-81 Win Over College of Faith

The Calvin men’s basketball team claimed the title of the 13th annual Calvin Tip-off Tournament, defeating the College of Faith 97-81. Junior Jordan Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) led the Knights with 17 points while senior Mickey DeVries (Lansing/Lansing Christian HS) had 15 points and eight rebounds. Senior Tyler Kruis (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS) and junior Tyler Dykstra (Holland/Holland Christian HS) were also both in double figures at 15 points and 10 points, respectively. Calvin shot 54.1% from the field, including 9-of-20 from behind the arc. The Knights also hit 22-of-25 free throws. Both DeVries and Brink were named to the all-tournament team while DeVries was named tournament MVP. Calvin will travel to Manchester on Tuesday for an 8 p.m. game.

Men’s Basketball Defeats Kuyper 105-86 in Calvin Tip-off Tournament

Calvin improved to 2-0 on the year with a 105-86 victory over Kuyper College in the first round of the Calvin Tip-off Tournament Friday night at Van Noord Arena. Calvin will face the College of Faith (3-2) in the championship game on Saturday at 3 p.m. College of Faith defeated Grace Bible College 86-81 in Friday’s opening first round game. Five Calvin players notched double-digits in scoring led by senior Mickey DeVries with 23 points. Sophomore Jordan Daley had a career-high 17 points to go with a career-high six assists while junior Jordan Brink had 15 points and senior Tyler Kruis 14 points. Sophomore Austin Parks also chipped in with a career-high 13 points including three field goals from beyond the three-point arc.

Men’s Basketball Opens Season With 72-58 Win Over Anderson

The Calvin men’s basketball team got off to a strong, balanced start in its season opener on Tuesday evening. Traveling down to Anderson University, the Knights claimed a 72-58 victory at the Ravens’ O.C. Lewis Gymnasium by leading from start to finish. The Knights claimed a 40-21 rebounding advantage by the end of the game. Junior Jordan Brink led the Calvin offense with 14 points while senior Tyler Kruis added 13 points and eight rebounds. Senior Mickey DeVries added a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Junior T.J. Huizenga contributed eight points and three steals off the bench.

Men’s Basketball Drops Exhibition Game to Ferris State 85-70

Calvin College was treated to its first basketball game of the season on Thursday evening as the Calvin men’s basketball team hosted Division II Ferris State for an exhibition game. After a strong first half and a two-point lead at half time, Calvin came out flat in the second half and was outscored by the Bulldogs 43-26 in the second period, dropping the exhibition contest 85-70. Calvin was led on offense by Mickey DeVries and Tyler Kruis who each scored 14 points. Kruis added eight rebounds. Jordan Brink tallied 10 points.
