The keys to the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex were given to Calvin College Friday afternoon. Calvin president Dr. Gaylen Byker was there to accept the keys from Christman Construction Company Senior Vice President Jim Cash. Members of the media and groups of individuals from the Calvin community were in attendance for the event. In addition, the men’s and women’s basketball teams had their first practices inside the VanNoord Arena on Friday.

DEFIANCE, OH—Calvin captured the championship of the 34th annual Defiance College Purple and Gold Classic Tuesday night, defeating Rockford College (IL) 90-71 in the championship game.
The tournament crown is Calvin’s first in a Christmas holiday tournament since 2004 when the Knights won the Wisconsin-River Falls Radisson Inn Holiday Tournament.

DEFIANCE, OH—The Calvin men’s basketball team snapped a four-game losing skid with a convincing 91-65 victory over Geneva College Monday night in a first round game of the Defiance College Purple and Gold Classic.

PALOS HEIGHTS, IL – Trinity Christian used an 18-2 second half run to pull away for a 73-65 victory over visiting Calvin late Saturday night. The host Trolls (8-3) erased a 44-40 deficit with 13 unanswered points with Will Bruinsma canning a pair of triples in the Trinity run.

The Saints took advantage of hot three-point shooting in the first half and relied on its stalwart center in the second, cinching a double-digit win over the Knights at Aquinas Fieldhouse for the second straight season.
Pedja Lazic scored 13 of his game-high 21 points after halftime, Jordan Torres broke loose against Calvin for five 3s and 18 points, and the Saints cruised to a 78-65 win.

WHEATON, IL – A torrent of three-point field goals allowed Carthage to finish the CCIW/MIAA Classic with a 2-0 record as the Red Men defeated Calvin 95-82 Saturday afternoon at Wheaton’s King Arena.

WHEATON, IL – A strong second half allowed host Wheaton to come back for a 68-56 victory over Calvin on the first night of competition of the CCIW/MIAA Classic. Ranked fourth nationally, Wheaton used 17 second half points from senior guard Kent Raymond to overcome a 35-32 halftime deficit.

HOLLAND- John Mantel (Chelsea HS) said Calvin needed to have a statement game against Cornerstone in Saturday’s Grand Rapids Hall of Fame Classic consolation game at Hope College.
Mantel did just that as he led the Knights with a career high 27 points as Calvin held off Cornerstone 85-82 in overtime. Mantel drained two clutch free throws with 10 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Matt Veltema’s (Calvin Christian) eight-footer with 39 seconds left in overtime was the difference.

HOLLAND- After capturing Calvin’s opening tip-off tournament convincingly last weekend, the Knights suffered a let down in the first round of the Grand Rapids Hall of Fame Classic Friday at Hope College.
