ANGOLA, IN—Calvin knocked down clutch free throws to preserve an 82-80 win at Trine in first game of the second round through the MIAA schedule. The Knights won their third straight game to hold on to a share of first place in the MIAA.

GRAND RAPIDS – Matt Veltema has been even more productive in Calvin’s starting lineup than he has off the bench, but he claims that nothing has changed since last week.
Nothing, except for a few more open shots.
After pouring in a career-best 21 points in a win over Albion on Saturday, Veltema set a new personal record by totaling 23 points in the Knights’ 74-60 win over Kalamazoo on Wednesday, jump-starting a fresh win streak for a Calvin team that dropped its previous contest at Van Noord Arena.

ALBION – The Calvin men’s basketball team dug down deep for a key conference victory on the road Saturday afternoon, defeating Albion 79-73 at Kresge Gymnasium to remain in first place in the MIAA standings.
The victory also allowed Calvin men’s basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek to become the all-time leader in coaching victories as he boosted his Calvin coaching record to 255-101 to move past Ed Douma who recorded 254 victories at Calvin from 1984-to-1996.

GRAND RAPIDS – The Knights misfired on four straight 3-pointers in the final 37 seconds and their late-game comeback surge was halted, falling 60-57 to Olivet in their first home loss at the Van Noord Arena.

HOLLAND –The Knights snapped a four game losing streak to Hope with a 66-64 win Saturday before a sold-out crowd of 3,653 at DeVos Fieldhouse. Hope’s Jesse Reimink missed a potential game winner with five seconds remaining to give Calvin its sixth straight win and sole possession of first place in the MIAA.
Men’s Basketball Defeats Adrian to Set Up Saturday Showdown at Hope

ADRIAN—With a share of first place on the line in the MIAA standings, Calvin rose to the occasion with an 87-56 victory over the host Adrian Bulldogs Wednesday night. The Calvin victory sets up a first place showdown on Saturday at Hope as the two storied rivals both head into the contest at 3-0 in league play, one game ahead of 2-1 Adrian.
WBBL’s On the Bench Visits Van Noord Arena

The Van Noord Arena hosted its first men’s and women’s varsity basketball games on January 7 against Trine University. Earlier in the day before the games, local Grand Rapids all-sports radio station
WBBL 1340 AM was there as WBBL sports director Bret Bakita hosted his morning “On the Bench” program live from the Van Noord Arena. During the program, Bakita interviewed Calvin men’s basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek, Calvin women’s basketball coach John Ross, Calvin men’s athletics director Dr. Jim Timmer Jr. and Mike Zwier and Sarah Partridge of the Calvin men’s and women’s basketball team respectively.

At 5-foot-9, Trent Salo is, more often than not, the shortest player on the court.
It’s the kind of height discrepancy that makes opponents salivate. The kind that elicits a quip or two from visiting student sections.
