A Brief History of Calvin Baseball -- Coming soon. Back to Top of Men's History Page A Brief History of Calvin Basketball -- Coming soon. Back to Top of Men's History Page A Brief History of Calvin Cross Country -- Calvin has owned one of the MIAA's strongest cross country programs since first fielding a team in 1953 (the year Calvin joined the MIAA). The Knights won the MIAA championship for the 14th consecutive year in 2000. They also won the NCAA Division III National Championship that year, a first for both Calvin and the MIAA. Calvin runners have been named league MVP 16 times in the last 20 years with three-time honorees Doug Diekema (1978, 1979, 1980), Adam Suarez (1987, 1988, 1989) and Ray VanArragon (1992, 1993, 1994) leading the pack. Suarez, VanArragon and John Brink also were three-time All-Americans. And Suarez and Brink join 2000 NCAA NAtional Runner-up Dan Hoekstra as the only three runners in Calvin history to earn seconds at the NCAAs (no Calvin male runner has ever won the National Title). Calvin has produced a slew of NCAA III All-Americans, including five in the 2000 National Championship run, the first time in league history that one school had all five scorers finish as All-Americans. Back to Top of Men's History Page A Brief History of Calvin Golf -- The very first MIAA MVP selected in men's golf was Calvin's Dave Tuls, back in 1965. He remains Calvin's lone MVP. Calvin had some terrific men's golf squads in the 1980s, including four straight MIAA runner-up berths between 1986 and 1989. In 1987 Calvin made school history by winning two of seven rounds, marking the first time a Calvin team had won a round during MIAA competition. Steve Ritsema earned All-MIAA berths for three straight years, establishing a high-water mark for Calvin golfers. Jeff Timmer set the Calvin MIAA single season average with a 76.3 average over seven rounds in 1994. Mark Van Stee closed out his collegiate career in 1999 as a three-time All-MIAA honoree and holder of the course record at Adrian's Lenawee Country Club. Calvin's 2000 squad was MIAA runners-up, matching the school's best-ever league finish. Back to Top of Men's History Page A Brief History of Calvin Soccer -- The first varsity soccer team at Calvin was formed in 1959. Soccer became an MIAA sport in 1970 and Calvin promptly won the first two league titles, beginning a string of 15 MIAA championships. The most recent such crown came in 1999. Calvin has the most league wins and the best league winning percentage since 1970. Calvin also has had 15 MIAA MVPs with three-time honoree Doug DeSmit ('81, '82, '83) leading the pack. DeSmit, also an All-American in 1982, still holds the MIAA single-season assist record while Calvin's Mark Recker is the MIAA's career assist leader. Recker was a two-time MVP in the late 70s. Joey Barone was an All-American and MIAA MVP in 1991. Joel Veldhouse was the most recent MVP, winning the award in 2002. Since 1999 the MIAA has given out the Zuidema Award, in honor of Dr. Marvin Zuidema who was Calvin's men's soccer coach from 1961 to 1998.
