Calvin Takes Early Lead in MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings

A record-setting fall sports season has allowed Calvin to build an early lead in the MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings. Through the recently completed MIAA fall sports season, Calvin leads the standings with 100 points, four points better than Hope. In the MIAA Women’s All-Sports Standings, Calvin has a first place total of 58 points with Hope second with 53. Hope leads the MIAA Men’s All-Sports standings with 43 points, one point better than Calvin.  This fall, Calvin captured a record six MIAA titles – winning conference crowns in men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf and volleyball.

MARSHALL - The Calvin men’s golf team claimed the first MIAA title of the 2012-13 academic year, placing third at the eighth and final MIAA Jamboree of the year Tuesday afternoon at the Medalist Golf Club with a team score of 324 strokes. Calvin finished five strokes behind second place Hope and 12 strokes behind first place Adrian but finished 10 strokes ahead of Hope in the final MIAA overall standings. The league title is Calvin’s second in the last three years in men’s golf. Calvin will now host two of the three 18-hole rounds that make up the 54-hole MIAA Spring Tournament next spring. The spring tournament determines the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Tournament in May. Calvin will be one of four teams teams competing in the tournament along with Hope, Trine and Adrian. In Tuesday’s round, Calvin was led by junior Jake Hoogstrate with a 79 while senior Ben Kuiper had an 80, sophomore James VanNoord had an 81, senior Dave Sarkipato an 84 and junior Ross Ryzenga a 93. Kuiper was named to the All-MIAA first team for the second straight year while Sarkipato landed a spot on the All-MIAA second team.

CASCADE - With one league tournament left to be played, the MIAA men’s golf race has tightened up. Calvin remains the league leader but rival Hope is now within 15 strokes of the Knights with Trine University 19 strokes behind.Calvin took third at Monday’s MIAA Jamboree hosted by the Knights at the Watermark Country Club with a team score of 311 strokes. Hope took first place with a team score of 299 with Trine second at 310.The final MIAA Jamboree of the year is scheduled for October 9 at the Medalist Golf Club with Albion College set to host.  The winner of the MIAA fall standings will claim the league’s regular season championship and will also host two of the three 18-hole rounds for the MIAA’s 54-hole spring tournament which determines the automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Tournament.
