GRAND RAPIDS—In what could be called the game of the year so far for Calvin Saturday afternoon at Grand Rapids Christian High School, the Knights added another chapter in their rivalry with Hope by defeating the Flying Dutch 1-0, capturing their third straight MIAA title and obtaining an automatic bid to the national tournament.

A match that certainly held a lot of emotion on both sides, Saturday's contest would prove to be sweet for the Knights after having lost a heartbreaker to Hope by the same score earlier this season at Hope's Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Besides the lone goal, a first half strike by junior forward Brad Heethuis (Jenison, MI), the story of the game was in Calvin goalkeeper Ryan Bratt (Silver Spring, MD). Bratt, a 6-foot-6 junior, got his first-ever start in goal Saturday due to lingering injuries to Jared Rushlau (Grandville, MI) and Michael Dolan (Casco, MI).

Bratt finished the match with a stellar performance, making five huge saves over the course of the game that kept Hope from equalizing.

"Bratt was a beast." Calvin coach Chris Hughes said emphatically after the game, "the guys rallied around him, before the game they were excited that he was in the net, and he [Bratt] did what he needed to do. I was very happy with his play today.

Calvin came out strong and finished strong, out-shooting Hope 19-10 overall with the Dutch having the shots-on-goal advantage, 5-4. Heethuis knocked in the only goal of the game in the seventh minute of play, his fourth and most important goal of the season.

The goal resulted from an early Calvin corner kick. Junior midfielder Dan Kmetz (Strongsville, OH) looped the ball to the far side of the box off the corner kick, where fellow junior Kyle Billin controlled and sent in a quick pass on the ground, past a couple Hope defenders and across the middle of the box. Heethuis was first onto the scene, shooting the ball past the Hope keeper and giving Calvin the lead. Kmetz and Billin were attributed the double assist.

"I just wanted to get a shot on the net and give it a chance to go in," Heethuis explained about how he approached the ball to shoot, "Kyle [Billin] played a great ball across and I was just looking to get a good shot."

Hope would rally with a string of chances in the second half to keep everyone on their toes, but to no avail, as Calvin's defense once again proved its metal in preserving the shutout victory.

"They are just rock solid," Bratt said of Calvin's defense, "It adds a lot to my confidence for sure in having guys like Snapper and Wilgenburg stopping almost everything that comes through, and they played great today."

"We are all just absolutely ecstatic now with this win," Bratt concluded, "It's a great feeling."

With the win Calvin will now play in the NCAA Division III national tournament, something that Hughes said he won't even start thinking about right now. For the moment, he's going to relish Saturday's victory.

"I'm very proud of these kids in being able to pull through today," Hughes continued, "Hope has a fantastic program with some true warriors, so tons of kudos to the effort they put in today."

"We always thought this could be ours but we had to prove it," Hughes said, "and we were able to put one more ball in their net than they put in ours."

MORE MEN'S SOCCER By Calvin Sports Information Director Jeff Febus

What a day for the Heethuis family. On Saturday, Calvin junior striker Brad Heethuis scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Hope that allowed the Knights to capture their consecutive MIAA title and gain an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament. Meanwhile, Brad's father Randy Heethuis was busy leading his Unity Christian boys soccer team to a Division II state title Saturday afternoon as the Crusaders defeated Petoskey 2-0 in the championship game.

Randy Heethuis is a 1984 Calvin College graduate who was a member of Calvin's 1981 and 1982 MIAA championship men's soccer teams.

Both games took place at the same time, keeping father and son apart during the action but certainly not in spirit. "Winning both games is pretty nice," said Brad Heethuis. "It was unfortunate that we had to miss each other's games but the results were great. I'm really happy for my father. It's exciting no doubt."

The game-winning goal by Brad Heethuis was also exciting as it came off a set piece with junior Dan Kmetz delivering a perfectly placed corner kick to the far side of the field that was collected by junior Kyle Billin (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and then slotted to Heethuis who blasted a low hard shot through a scrum of players just inside the left post 6:04 into the match. The goal was the fourth of the year for Heethuis including his third game-winner of the year.

"We've been practicing that play over and over this week," said Brad. "We had it nailed in our heads pretty good and I'm glad it worked out. Our win today was a total team effort. It feels great."

VOLLEYBALL

By Calvin Sports information Student Assistant Andrew Knot

In its first two meetings, Calvin dropped matches to archrival Hope in the MIAA regular season. At Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse, the Dutch swept the Knights in three sets. At the return trip in Calvin's VanNoord Arena, Calvin dropped the match in five sets, disappointingly dropping the final two sets.

On Saturday, November 7, the two met in the MIAA championship, with Calvin plagued with injury and sickness the Knights beat the odds and upset the Flying Dutch, who were previously ranked #5 in the country.

The third time's a charm.

Calvin's star middle hitter Rebecca Kamp wasn't 100% because of an injury. Defensive specialists Jen Pluymert and Kelli Peterson were both sidelined, Pluymert with sickness and Peterson recovering from an injury.

Hope entered the championship final with a 30-2 record, as well as a perfect 16-0 mark in regular season conference play. Calvin was 26-6. Throw out the records in rivalry games.

Calvin dropped the first set, losing 25-15 in a disheartening performance. In the first set, the Knights were dominated at the net and trailed 9-1 at one point.

It's never over ‘til it's over.

"Everyone stepped up. Our seniors were unwilling to let our season end. We've waited two and a half months for this desire, fight, and heart," said Coach Amber Warners.

It's all about heart.

But this game was more than any trite, overused expression. The Knights entered the match with the odds against them and triumphed over their archrival.

Calvin responded to what looked to be a heartbreaking loss in the first set with a 25-23 victory in the second set, with a Lizzie Kamp roll shot sealing the victory for the Knights.

In the third set, Calvin found themselves in an early deficit. Trailing 21-14, Calvin crept back into the set, until Hope responded by staking a 23-20 lead. Calvin then battled back, scoring five unanswered points in to steal the pivotal third set. Calvin fought back with Katie Corbett making defensive plays from her knees; Erin VanderPlas crushing a huge kill, a monster double block, and a Renee DeHaan tip kill.

Calvin had been here before. They let a 2-1 set lead slip in their last clash with Hope. This time, something was different.

"We have to play every point every day," said senior Kelsey Sears.

Sears' attitude was reflected in her team, who came out with a will to win in the fourth and final set.

"It was great to see us not be satisfied after the third set. We kept fighting until it was all done," added Coach Warners.

With an increased air of confidence the Knights took the court in the fourth set, determined to finish the match. Calvin came out of the gate strong, taking an early 12-4 lead, forcing a Hope timeout.

Despite a few minor runs from the Dutch, Calvin stepped up. Every aspect of team harmonized, resulting in a Calvin masterpiece to the tune of a 25-13 victory.

Thunderous kills from the Kamp sisters created Calvin's winning margin, Kelsey Sears' diving one handed dig preserved Calvin's lead, and Nora Bruskewitz's distribution kept the Calvin offense clicking. When Hope's final attack skipped off the top of the net and out of bounds, no cliché could say it.

Only one thing could: MIAA Tournament Champions.

"We are right where we want to be. We are peaking at the right time," said Sears.

The Knights now enter the NCAA III tournament via the MIAA tournament championship automatic bid.

"To pull this off against our rival in their court ranks way up there," said Warners.

No matter how you say it, Calvin's MIAA tournament championship was more than a cliché.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams split non-conference dual meets with visiting Wheaton Saturday afternoon at the Venema Aquatic Center.

In the women's meet, Calvin defeated the Thunder 154-140 to improve to 1-1 in dual meet action. In the men's meet, Calvin fell to Wheaton 171-117 to fall to 0-2 on the year.

Recording victories for the Calvin women were freshman Stephanie Fox in the 200 freestyle (1:56.70) and 100 freestyle (53.99), senior Maggie Vail in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.23) and 200 breaststroke (2:27.03), freshman Rachel Colasurdo in the 200 butterfly (2:18.20) and senior Casey Herman in the one-meter (254.70) and three-meter (229.65) diving competitions.

VOLLEYBALL Calvin 3, Alma 0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-17) (written by Calvin Sports Information Student Assistant Mitch Blankespoor)

HOLLAND -- The Knights came into tonight's MIAA tournament matchup with a 6-1 record in MIAA Tournament play against the Alma College Scots. Calvin lived up to that billing by defeating the Scots (17-13) in three sets 25-23, 25-21, 25-17. Calvin, now 26-6, will face Hope on Saturday in the MIAA Tournament final. The Dutch defeated Albion 25-10, 25-10, 25-5 in Friday's second semifinal match.

Calvin head coach Amber Warners had to mix and match the starting lineup. Rebecca Kamp, who suffered an injury earlier in the week, warmed up with the team, but was a late scratch. She wasn't the only one injured or ill. Normal participants Kelly Peterson, Jen Pluymert and Sara Kramer did not play either. Calvin started Erin VanderPlas, Renee DeHaan, and Kim Wigboldy in the front row. The back row consisted of Katie Corbitt, Lizzie Kamp, and Nora Bruskewitz.

Calvin did not start the match well, falling behind early 7-2 in set one. The Knights rebounded and took the lead 19-16. Alma the called a timeout, which proved to work as the Scots took the lead 23-22. Calvin countered with a timeout and won the next three points to clinch the first set. The second and third sets were more straight forward as Calvin trailed only once in each set 2-1.

Calvin dominated in almost every statistical category. Senior setter Nora Bruskewitz had 46 assists while Hannah Hewitt had 32 for Alma. Calvin totaled 49 kills while hitting .330 as a team. Calvin used a 4-pronged attack that featured Erin VanderPlas with 13 kills, Kin Wigboldy with 11 kills, Lizzie Kamp with 9 kills, and Renee DeHaan with 7 kills. Alma had 36 kills hitting .148. Alma had Rebecca Ratkov and Shelby Gray record 9 kills, and Beth Caldwell with 8 kills. Alma had more team digs, with 58, than Calvin, who had 53.

When asked about then game, Amber Warners replied, "I was proud of how our team fought with Becca being out. We came out with fire. We didn't get down on ourselves when Alma made its runs. We played steady the whole game."

The winner of Saturday's MIAA Tournament Championship final will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament.

Men's Soccer Pulls Out Win at Trine to Help Create Saturday Showdown for MIAA Title With Hope; Women's Cross Country Team Ranked Number-One - Men's Team Moves Up To 15th

MEN'S SOCCER Calvin 3, Trine 2

ANGOLA, IN -- An MIAA title and an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament will be on the line Saturday afternoon when Calvin and Hope meet in men's soccer at Eagle Stadium on the campus of Grand Rapids Christian High School. A 3-2 Calvin victory over Trine and a Hope tie at Olivet on Wednesday turned Saturday's Calvin-Hope contest into a title tilt. With its win at Trine and Hope's 0-0 tie at Olivet, Calvin (9-3-1 MIAA) picked up two points on Hope in the league standings and also moved to within two points of the Flying Dutchmen (9-1-3 MIAA). Hope has 30 points in league play while Calvin has 28 points. A victory by Calvin would give Calvin the outright title. A tie or a Hope victory would give the Flying Dutchmen the outright title. The winner of the MIAA will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament. Hope is currently ranked fifth in the most recent set of Central Region rankings, released this afternoon while Calvin is ranked sixth.

Saturday's game between Calvin and Hope has been moved to Grand Rapids Christian High School because of poor field conditions at Calvin's Zuidema Field.

In its win over Trine on Wednesday, Calvin needed a come-from-behind effort to secure the win. The Knights (14-4-1) overall struck first, scoring in the 15th minute of play as junior Lucas Wilgenberg (Visalia, CA) redirected a corner kick from senior Alex McKenzie (Lindenhurst, IL) into the net for his second goal of the season.

Trine (7-11-1 overall, 4-8-1 MIAA) roared back with two goals just four-and-a-half minutes apart in the second half to take a 2-1 lead. Jordan Diemer put the Thunder on the board with a goal in the 55th minute and Foster Webb then connected off a corner kick in the 60th minute of play. Josh Rivera was credited with the assist on both scoring plays.

Calvin rebounded quickly however as freshman Joe Broekhuizen (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) scored his fourth goal of the season, blasting in a pass from teammate Nick Holtrop (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) just 1:12 after Trine's second tally, tying the game at two.

Calvin continued to pressure and finally broke through again with exactly seven minutes left in regulation as freshman Chris Nance (Washington, MI/Warren DeLaSalle HS) sent a cross into the six-yard box that was headed straight down by junior Dan Kmetz (Strongsville, OH). The header by Kmetz bounced off the ground and hopped off the head of Trine's onrushing goalkeeper Nick Thon and into the net to give the Knights a 3-2 lead that they would hold onto.

Thon was stout against the Knights, recording 10 saves as Calvin was credited with 30 shots at goal. Trine had four shots at goal with sophomore goalkeeper Jared Rushlau (Grandville/Grandville HS) picking up one save.

MIAA MEN'S SOCCER STANDINGS THROUGH 11-4-09

Hope 9-1-3 (30 points) Calvin 9-3-1 (28 points) Kalamazoo 7-5-1 (22 points) Olivet 6-4-3 (21 points) Albion 6-6-1 (19 points) Trine 4-8-1 (13 points) Adrian 3-7-3 (12 points) Alma 1-11-1 (4 points)

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

For the sixth consecutive week, the Calvin women's cross country team is ranked number-one in the Division III Top 35 rankings compiled by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The Knights received a first place total of 279 points in this week's poll, 10 points ahead of second-ranked Johns Hopkins (MD). Wisconsin-Eau Claire is ranked third and MIT ranked fourth. On the men's side, Calvin has moved up one spot in this week's poll as the Knights are ranked 15th, sharing the spot with Haverford (PA). North Central (IL) remains the top-ranked team in the men's poll, garnering 280 points in this week's poll, 10 points ahead of second-ranked Wisconsin-LaCrosse.

Both Calvin cross country teams captured MIAA title this past Saturday at the MIAA Championships as both teams recorded perfect scores of 15 points, marking the first time in MIAA history that men's and women's teams from the same school achieved the feat in the same year.

Both teams return to action on November 14 when they compete at the Great Lakes Regionals hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Volleyball Holds Off Upset Bid By Saint Mary's in First Round of MIAA Tournament; Women's Soccer Falls In Shootout at MIAA Tournament Semifinal to Kalamazoo

VOLLEYBALL Calvin 3, Saint Mary's 1 (25-11, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23) (Written by sports information student assistant Mitch Blankespoor)

GRAND RAPIDS - The 14th ranked Calvin volleyball team played host to Saint Mary's on Tuesday night in a first round MIAA Tournament match at VanNoord Arena. The Knights, who are now 25-6 on the season, defeated the Belle's, who finish their season 9-17, in four sets, 25-11, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23.

Calvin played the match without sophomore hitter Rebecca Kamp who sat out Tuesday's match with an injury.

After winning the opening set in strong fashion, Calvin began to run into a stubborn Saint Mary's squad that began to turn the momentum. In the second set, it was deadlocked at 14 when Saint Mary's went on a 5-0 run to help propel itself to a second set win. The third set was close all the way through, but Calvin maintained a small lead and won 25-22. In the fourth set, Saint Mary's led 22-21 but Calvin rebounded by winning four of the final five points to close out the match.

In Kamp's absence, her younger sister Lizzie stepped up. She led the Knights with 16 of Calvin's 58 kills, while Renee DeHaan added 15 kills and sophomore Erin VanderPlas had 11 kills. Saint Mary's had 45 kills as a team, with Lorna Slupczynski and Lindsey Stuss having 15 and 13 kills respectively. Nora Bruskewitz had 42 assists, while Danie Brink of Saint Mary's had 34. The match was full of digs with Calvin holding a slight edge,75-73. Calvin had 6 team blocks, while Saint Mary's had 2 team's blocks.

When asked about the game, Warners replied, "I was impressed how we came out with such new lineups. We had no time to practice with people in new positions because Becca's injury happened so suddenly. We have played through injuries all year, and for the most part, have still won. We have more depth this year than any other. There is no question that our depth has helped us through these injuries. I am glad we kept everyone on this team."

With this win, Calvin advances to the semifinals of the MIAA tournament where the Knights will face Alma at 5:30 p.m. at Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse. Hope will face Albion in the second semifinal later that evening. Friday's winners will then play in the MIAA tournament final on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER Calvin 0, Kalamazoo (Kalamazoo wins shootout 3-1)

GRAND RAPIDS -- Calvin's run through the MIAA Tournament was a short one as the Knights were eliminated in the MIAA Tournament semifinals on Tuesday afternoon by way of a penalty kick shootout. Tuesday's semifinal contest will go in the books as a 0-0 double-overtime tie but the Hornets (8-6-4) advanced to Saturday's MIAA Tournament final by defeating Calvin 3-1 in a penalty kick shootout. Kalamazoo will host Albion in Saturday's MIAA Tournament final with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament. Sixth-seeded Albion defeated second-seeded Adrian 1-0 in overtime in Tuesday's other semifinal.

Calvin (13-4-1) entered the game as the top seed in the tournament but could not capitalize on its scoring chances, sending the contest into a shootout where the Knights were able to convert only one penalty kick opportunity. Calvin is now 1-6-1 in shootouts including 0-2 in MIAA Tournament play.

In the shootout, Calvin senior goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield HS) came up with two saves but Calvin senior Emily Ottenhoff (Palos Heights, IL/Chicago Christian HS) was the only Knight to successfully convert a penalty. Kalamazoo's Julia Schroeder converted the clinching penalty, scoring on its sixth attempt in the shootout.

Calvin outshot fourth-seeded Kalamazoo 25-6 and nearly broke through for a goal in the 32nd minute on a well-placed cross by junior Elaine Schnabel (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton HS) that was just headed wide of an open net.

In the second half, Ottenhoff looped a free kick into the box that was collected by junior Kelli Honderd (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS). Honderd fired a shot that was cleared off the backline by a Kalamazoo defender.

Calvin later outshot Kalamazoo 3-0 in the first overtime session and 3-1 in the second overtime period.

Sulzer finished the game with three saves for the Knights.

Calvin is now 12-3-2 all-time in MIAA Tournament play including 1-2-1 against Kalamazoo in the tournament.
